GREATER NOIDA, India—Sebastian Vettels seemingly unstoppable march to a third straight Formula One title took another stride with victory in the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday, though the Red Bull drivers nearest rival, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, kept up the pressure with a second-place finish. J.J. Watt Youth Jersey . Vettel won a fourth straight race in a season for the first time in his career—completing a clean sweep of the Asian swing—and now leads the drivers championship by 13 points with three races to go. He is trying to join Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher as the only men to win a hat trick of drivers championships. “Its pretty amazing (to win four straight races),” Vettel said. “Its very hard to target these kinds of things, they either happen or they dont happen.” The one-two finish of the top two drivers in the standings meant the fight for the title had now boiled down to a head-to-head fight in all but the mathematical sense. Asked if he had one hand on the championship trophy, Vettel suggested it was too close to call yet. “The other one is probably Fernandos,” Vettel said. “Its a big step for us but there is a long way to go and we know how quickly things can change.” Alonso acknowledged second was the best he could hope for on Sunday, but with upgrades to his car expected ahead of next weeks Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he still had faith that he could catch Vettel by the final round. “Its not easy at the moment to fight with Red Bull but we never give up,” Alonso said. “We want the joy in Brazil, not only here, and I am sure we will do it. “There are still many points on the table, so I am still optimistic.” Red Bulls Mark Webber was running in second place until lap 48 of the 60 when the failure of his KERS power boost system allowed Alonso to sweep past on the main straight. The Australian then had to fight hard to hold off McLarens Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps, sneaking into the final podium position by just six tenths of a second. “Its so demoralizing on that straight with no KERS,” Webber said. “I was a moving target really.” McLarens Jenson Button was fifth, while Ferraris Felipe Massa held off Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus in a race-long dogfight in which the pair was rarely more than a second apart. Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg, Lotus Romain Grosjean and Williams Bruno Senna took the final points positions. When told that he was the first man since the late Ayrton Senna in 1989 to lead every lap of three straight races, Vettel appeared emotional, saying: “Its really, really special. We all remember Ayrton forever.” Vettels only moment of concern came at the beginning of the race when Webber got off to a slightly better start, and the German shifted sharply to his right to block his teammates run, though the Australian said the move was “fair enough.” The main casualty on the first lap was Schumacher, who suffered a right rear puncture when his Mercedes was hit from behind by Toro Rossos Jean-Eric Vergne. Forced to complete most of a lap on a wheel rim before he was able to pit, Schumachers race was effectively over. Alonso got a great run out of the third-turn hairpin and was able to move past both McLarens on the main straight even without the benefit of the DRS open wing, and that proved decisive in his second-place finish. The race quickly settled into a pattern, with all drivers able to go for a single pit-stop strategy on the very smooth Buddh surface. Saubers Sergio Perez retired on lap 19 after his right rear clipped the front wing of Daniel Ricciardos Toro Rosso. Webber was running in second, within 5.4 seconds of Vettel after lap 21 when his KERS started to malfunction, allowing the German to almost double that advantage over the next four laps, and from there the result was never in doubt. The highlight of his career was probably a victory in Brazil—a dozen years ago. Even overseas, Chapman is hardly a star. The Englishman plays on the European Senior Tour, which has held only one tournament this year and is pressed for sponsors. Now Chapman is one round from a surprising victory at the Senior PGA Championship. After shooting a 7-under 64 on Saturday, hes not only leading, hes threatening to rout the rest of the field. Chapman leads John Cook by five strokes heading into to what could be a sweltering Sunday finish. “Hopefully, if all goes well tomorrow, maybe we can attract a few more sponsors and hopefully get our purses up,” Chapman said. Chapman finished the day at 14-under par. Cook began the round tied with Chapman for the lead, but couldnt keep pace and settled for a 69 to drop into second place. “It felt like I shot a hundred compared to Roger,” Cook said. “He played phenomenal. He had it. It was a pleasure to watch.” Chapmans 54-hole score of 199 tied the tournament record set by Sam Snead in 1973, although Snead was 17 under when he set the mark. Steve Pate had a 67 to join 66-year-old Hale Irwin at 7 under. Irwin made a triple bogey on the par-3 fourth, but played well on the back nine and shot 69. Chapman beat Padraig Harrington in a playoff to win a European Tour event in Brazil in 2000. He has never won on the Champions Tour. He made the cut in all 11 of his Champions Tour starts last year, but didnt have a top-10 finish. After leaving the main European Tour, he spent some time as a rules official. Hes playing in the Senior PGA for the fourth time, and his best finish was a tie for 27th last year. The 53-year-old Chapman tied for 16th a couple weekends ago at the Mallorca Open—the European Senior Tours lone event so far this season. Hell have one more challenge this weekend. The temperature is expected to reeach 90 degrees Sunday, when the final round is played. Brian Cushing Womens Jersey. . Chapman began to pull away from the field on the front nine Saturday. While Irwin was making a six on No. 4, Chapman rolled in his second birdie of the day to move to 9 under. On the par-5 fifth, Chapmans second shot went into the rough to the left of the fairway. He calmly pitched out onto the green, giving himself a birdie putt pin high from about 25 feet, which he made. Even his lone bogey was impressive in its own way. On the par-4 seventh, Chapmans drive went through the fairway, and he needed two hacks to get the ball out of some tall grass. But he was then able to pitch to within about 10 feet, and he made the putt to prevent further damage. “It was just one of those days, where I think its the best iron play Ive ever played in my career,” Chapman said. “It was pretty special.” After making the turn at 9 under, Chapman birdied Nos. 10, 11 and 12 on his way to a 30 on the back nine. He hit several impressive approach shots, leaving himself birdie putts of 3 feet on No. 11 and about a foot on the par-4 14th. He made another 3-foot birdie putt on No. 16, then parred the last two holes. Irwin shot a 66 on Friday to put himself in contention despite mediocre putting. He wouldve had a similar round Saturday if not for trouble at No. 4. His tee shot missed to the left, where the green is protected by a wetland area. After going back to the drop zone, Irwin pitched onto the green, but then he three-putted from roughly the same distance as Chapmans birdie putt. “I just pulled it,” Irwin said. “I hit up on top of the bank and it rolled down in the water, and went to the drop zone and hit it on and three-putted for a six. Its pretty easy to do when you stop and think about it, especially the way Im putting.” Play was delayed about three hours at the start of the third round on a wet morning. Warmer air is expected to hit Benton Harbor from the south Sunday. ’ ’ ’
