NEW YORK —One playoff victory was good enough for Mike Woodson to return as
New York Knicks coach—even with Phil Jackson lurking as a potential
candidate. Paul McQuistan Jersey . Woodson knows more
will be asked of him now. “I know expectations are high and they should be
high,” Woodson said during a conference call, “and Im looking forward to the
challenge.” The Knicks removed the interim tag Friday and announced they had
given Woodson a multiyear contract extension, rewarding him for a terrific
finish to what had been a turbulent season. Woodson led the Knicks to an 18-6
record after replacing Mike DAntoni on March 14. The Knicks lost 4-1 to Miami in
the first round, snapping an NBA-record, 13-game post-season losing streak by
winning Game 4 for their first victory since 2001. Still, there was speculation
that Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan would open one of the leagues
biggest check books to go after Jackson, the 11-time champion coach and former
Knicks player who sat out last season after retiring from the Los Angeles
Lakers. Yet the Knicks never looked anywhere beyond Woodson, believing they can
continue to improve with a full season of his coaching. “I think Woody earned
the right to be the first person we talked to and turned out to be the only
person we talked to because our discussions with him after the season really
reflected why he was so successful during the season,” general manager Glen
Grunwald said. “We thought he was the right guy for this team at this time.
Obviously, theres some great coaches out there that had we opened up the search
would have been called, mainly Phil Jackson, whos the most successful coach in
the NBA history, but we felt Woody was our guy and he showed it during the
season and our discussions after the season.” Woodson shrugged off the Jackson
speculation. “Tremendous coach, I know his names been mentioned a lot, but that
was not my concern,” Woodson said. “My concern at the time was coaching the New
York Knicks the period that I had to coach and Mr. Dolan decided to bring me
back.” Neither the Knicks nor Woodson would disclose the terms of the deal. A
first-round draft pick of the Knicks in 1980, Woodson returned to the team last
summer as an assistant coach, providing a defensive-minded voice to DAntonis
staff. Woodsons influence, combined with Defensive Player of the Year
Tyson Chandler, moved the Knicks into the top half of the leagues defensive
rankings after they had been one the worst teams for years. DAntoni resigned
March 14 when the Knicks were 18-24 and in danger of missing the playoffs.
Woodson won his first five games and was praised by players for holding them
more accountable to playing defence. Most importantly, he got the most out of
Carmelo Anthony, who was having a disappointing season in DAntonis offence but
was Aprils Eastern Conference player of the month. “Mike took over the team
under challenging circumstances and made it clear, starting on day one, that he
was going to hold every player on our roster accountable,” Dolan said in a
statement. “We saw a significant improvement since Mike took over and believe
our team will only keep improving under Mikes direction.” Woodson denied recent
reports that he had replaced agent Joe Glass under pressure from Dolan to avoid
having to work again with former coach Larry Browns representation. Woodson
confirmed he switched to CAA, but said it was his choice, and that agent Terry
Prince had worked on his contract. Anthony, Chandler and fellow star Amare
Stoudemire had all backed Woodsons return when the season ended. And his chances
of improving returned when the Knicks removed the interim tag from Grunwald, his
former college teammate at Indiana, late in the regular season. Woodson
previously spent six seasons as coach of the Atlanta Hawks, improving his win
total in every season until they went 53-29 in 2009-10. But he wasnt retained
after they were swept in the conference semifinals for the second straight year.
He then sat out a year before interviewing last summer for openings in Detroit
—where he was an assistant on the Pistons NBA championship team in 2004—
Minnesota and Houston. He then was hired by the Knicks on Aug. 29. Woodson has a
career 224-292 record as an NBA coach. Bruce Irvin Womens Jersey . One-Two Punch –
Hakeem Nicks entered the season as one of the best wideouts in the game and
after a few quieter outings to end the season, Nicks erupted in the playoffs
with 28 catches for 444 yards and four touchdowns in four games. Kam Chancellor Jersey . Taking on the

. Joey Elliott, out last season with a torn knee ligament, will start Thursday
in place of Alex Brink when Winnipeg (1-5) hosts the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-3).
Jon Ryan Jersey . Clark was awarded the kick
when Real Salt Lake keeper Nick Rimando fouled Macoumba Kandji in the penalty
area. Brad Davis of the Dynamo failed to convert a penalty kick in the 76th
minute. Russell Wilson Womens Jersey . Zambrano
homered and pitched into the eighth inning, and Hanley Ramirez went deep, too,
leading the Miami Marlins to a 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on
Sunday. MANHATTAN, Kan. —Third-ranked Kansas States perfect season remained
intact Saturday night. So did its national title hopes. The future of both may
be in jeopardy, though, after Heisman Trophy front-runner Collin Klein left in
the third quarter of a 44-30 victory very Oklahoma State with an undisclosed
injury. Kansas State coach Bill Snyder declined to discuss the nature or
severity of it afterward, and said he wasnt sure whether Klein would be
available for next Saturdays game at TCU. “Obviously he was injured or we
wouldnt have taken him out,” Snyder said. Klein had thrown for 245 yards and run
for 64 more before sneaking in for his 50th career rushing touchdown with 9:47
left in the third quarter to give Kansas State a 38-17 lead. It wasnt clear when
he got hurt, but Daniel Sams played the rest of the way. “Without Collin at
quarterback, we had to do some adjustments,” said Tyler Lockett, who had a
100-yard kickoff return touchdown. “Collin was still a leader. He was on the
sideline getting us going, especially when things werent going our way. Thats
what I like about him.” Oklahoma States Wes Lunt also left with an injury after
throwing his third interception in the third quarter. The freshman quarterback,
who missed six weeks with a knee injury earlier this year, threw for 184 yards
and a touchdown before giving way to Clint Chelf. Cowboys coach Mike Gundy
likewise refused to discuss his quarterbacks injury. “Im really disappointed in
myself, in our coaches, in the way we played,” Gundy said. “You travel on the
road, and you play a good football team, and you turn the ball over, youre poor
on special teams and you dont tackle well, you essentially dont give yourself a
chance to win.” Allen Chapman picked off three passes, returning one for a
touchdown, and John Hubert added a pair of TD runs as the Wildcats (9-0, 6-0 Big
12) moved ever close to a Big 12 title. Perhaps a national title, too. They
began the day second in the BCS standings behind only Alabama, which squeaked
past LSU, and ahead of fellow unbeaten teams Notre Dame and Oregon. “Im proud of
our guys because I think theyve held up under the pressure,” Snyder said,
“because it increases as you go on.” Kansas State ended the Cowboys three-game
winning streak and lock up its first win over them since 2006. The Wildcats have
scored at least 44 points six ttimes this season, and this time did it against a
team that had allowed 38 total over its last three games. Steven Hauschka Jersey. “It was a tough loss
and everything, but they played great,” Oklahoma State running back Joseph
Randle said. “Theyre deserving of where theyre at, 9-0, and they played a great
game.” Chelf finished 16 of 27 for 233 yards and a touchdown for the Cowboys
(5-3, 3-2), who should know something about playing late-season spoiler to a
team in title contention. They were ranked No. 2 when they lost to Iowa State
late last season, and got shut out of the BCS title game. This one was just
about as wild as last seasons matchup in Stillwater, when the Cowboys held on in
the final minutes after the teams combined for 32 fourth-quarter points.
Oklahoma State struck first when Lunt hit Austin Hays for a 54-yard touchdown
reception, but the Wildcats came back with 17 unanswered points—Huberts two
touchdown runs were sandwiched around the first of Anthony Canteles three field
goals. Quinn Sharp added the first of his three field goals to get the Cowboys
within 17-10 before the fireworks really started: Lockett field the ensuing
kickoff deep in his end zone and went the distance for his fourth career TD
return, and Desmond Roland answered by fielding a short kickoff by Kansas State
and going 80 yards for another touchdown return. Chapmans pick-six made it 31-17
at halftime. The Cowboys had the ball to start the second half, and Lunt
appeared to get hurt while throwing an interception to Nigel Malone. He never
returned to the game. The Wildcats marched 93 yards before Kleins touchdown
plunge from a yard out made it 38-17, but their star quarterback never returned
to the game. Sharp and Cantele traded field goals before Chelf hit Charlie Moore
for a 13-yard touchdown catch to get the Cowboys within 41-27. The two kickers
traded field goals again before Cantele missed from 24 yards to give Oklahoma
State the ball with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game. The Cowboys marched to the
Kansas State 8, but Chapman picked off Chelf in the end zone for his final
interception of the night. His three picks were one shy of Jaime Mendezs school
record set against Temple on Sept. 26, 1992. “It came down to a couple
possessions, and we turned the ball over, and youre not going to win like that,”
Chelf said. “We definitely had to play better than we did.” ’ ’ ’
