Louis Cardinals acquired bullpen help at the trade deadline, getting
right-hander Edward Mujica from the Miami Marlins for 2010 first-round draft
pick Zack Cox. The 28-year-old Mujica is 0-3 with a 4.38 ERA and two saves in 41
games and has held right-handed hitters to a .211 average. Last year he was 9-6
with a 2.96 ERA. “We think hes going to be a nice fit,” Cardinals manager
Mike Matheny said before Tuesday nights game at Colorado. “Hes going to bring
some experience and hes going to be able to help out some of our young pitchers.
Hes got a good arm and a good split. That split really works well for
right-handed and left-handed hitters. Hes coming off a strong year last year. He
just has that reputation as being a guy who can come in and fill a few different
roles for you at the back end of your bullpen. So, hes an exciting pickup for us
and everybody is anxious for him to get here.” More than likely, Mujica will be
used in the seventh or eighth inning as a setup man. “That wouldnt be anything
new for him,” Matheny said. “Thats what hes been doing. Hes had quite a few
holds in his career. He knows how to pitch with a lead.” The 23-year-old Cox was
batting .254 with nine homers and 30 RBIs at Triple-A Memphis. He was the 25th
overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft out of Arkansas and jumped from Class A
Palm Beach to Double-A Springfield last season. The Cardinals will announce a
corresponding roster move after Mujica joins his new team in Colorado. Matheny
said Mujica was expected to arrive in time for Wednesday nights game against the

Jeff Stoughton, and a 7-6 extra-end win over Brad Gushue of St. Johns, N.L. “We
had to dig deep today,” said McEwen. “The curling gods were not shining on us
yesterday, and we probably deserved a better fate than 0-2.” Edmontons Kevin
Martin defeated Gushue 4-2 and the Niklas Edin rink of Sweden 6-4 to remain the
only undefeated mens team at 4-0. Torontos John Epping, who is seeded eighth in
the eight-team field, and Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., are tied for second
at 3-1. Epping defeated Howard 6-3, and then drew to the four-foot to get by
Edmontons Kevin Koe 7-6 in an extra end. Howard rebounded from the
early-afternoon loss to beat Stoughton 6-4 in the evening. McEwen credited lead
Denni Neufeld with setting the stage for the game-winning point. “Our lead
almost won the game for us on his first two shots (of the extra end),” said
McEwen. “Brads last shot may have picked a bit because it had perfect weight and
perfect line, or I would have had to draw to a decent piece of the button.”
McEwen did not have to throw his final rock. In womens play, Winnipegs Cathy
Overton-Clapham clinched first place in the round robin, and a semifinal berth.

Jones, who struggled with consistency early in the week, liked the play of her
rink on Thursday. Lawton came through under pressure on the games final shot for
an important 6-5 win over Middaugh. “I had to play lighter weight, I came off a
rock, tapped one of our other rocks sideways onto the button for two,” explained
Lawton. “There wasnt really that much risk to it, but I wanted to take advantage
of that second point and not have to go an extra end.” Middaugh kept her playoff
hopes alive with a 4-2 win over Nedohin in the evening draw. ¡ Jennifer Jones
