MONTREAL —Veteran Canadian driver Patrick Carpentier will race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve once again. Peyton Manning Jersey . Carpentier has secured a ride with RAB Racing at the upcoming NAPA Auto Parts 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Aug. 18 in Montreal. The Joliette, Que., native won the pole for this race in 2007 and posted second-place finishes in 2007 and 2008. The last three Montreal races saw Carpentier as one of the fastest on the track before mechanical issues or an accident ended his races early. “The Montreal race is my Daytona 500,” said the 40-year-old Carpentier, who has led 14 laps on the 2.71-mile road course. “I know I said last year would be my final race, but Im a racer. When they called and asked if I would run Montreal again it didnt take long for me to answer. “Ive said many times that winning in Montreal would definitely be a highlight in my career. Moreover, this years race is different, because my participation will benefit the Montreal Sainte-Justine UFC Foundation.” Carpentier has started 15 Nationwide and 39 Sprint Cup races in NASCAR after winning five races and reaching 22 podiums on the now defunct CART open-wheel circuit. He also won the Formula Atlantic championship in 1996. The B.C. Lions rewarded Lulay, their No. 1 quarterback, on Tuesday for his outstanding 2011 CFL season by signing him to a new two-year contract. Lulay confirmed the deal includes one year plus an option. “Even when I first came to this league, I never wanted to come here and think that Id go somewhere else,” said Lulay. “So I consider myself all-in here. Thats really what this is about.” Lulay, a 28-year-old Salem, Ore., native was due to play out his option in 2012 and then could have become a free agent. “Its securing next season and the near future,” he said. “But if the NFL was really what I wanted to do, I would have just played out (the 2012) season and tried to see what would happen.” Lulay guided the Lions last year to an 11-7 record, a first-place finish in the West Division and a remarkable Grey Cup last November. The miraculous championship came after the Lions started the season 1-6. He was named the CFLs outstanding player as well as the 2011 Grey Cup MVP. With Lulays signing, the Lions now have all of their offensive starters under contract for 2012. Noting that most of the returners were also with the club last season when it lost its first five games, Lulay said he likes the Lions chances of repeating as Grey Cup champions. “To have all of your starters return after a championship season, that doesnt happen very often,” said Lulay. “Its exciting.” Before signing with the Lions as a free agent in 2009, the Montana State grad had three unsuccessful tryouts with the Seattle Seahawks, another one with the New Orleans Saints and also played in the now-defunct NFL Europe with the Berlin Thunder. In Lions general manager Wally Buonos view, Lulay took the teams interests into account by signing a new deal rather than by playing out his option. “For a high-profile player, I really dont like the option year,” said Buono. Because of the scrutiny that a quarterback and other stars face, Buono prefers to re-sign his top players before their deals expire. A high-profile player who decides to play out his option creates an “an aura of confrontation, an aura of uncertainty”—in other words, a negative situation all-around. The Lions learned the hard way when former quarterback Casey Printers played out his option in his first go-round with the Lions before seeking NFL employment with the Kansas City Chiefs. But Buono said the situation applies to every signal-caller. “Playing out your option—for any quarterback, whether its Casey Printers, or (former Lions QB) Dave Dickenson or Travis Lulay—is a very unsteadying process,” said Buono. He was wary of getting into detail on Lulay because the team did not disclose details of the contract. However, Buono all but confirmed the Lions sought to sign Lulay to a longer term. &quuot; We looked at a number of options,” said Buono. Zane Beadles Jersey. But he said his primary concern was to get Lulay signed to a new deal for 2012. Both the GM and Lulay told reporters that the length of the deal does not matter because, unlike with other major sports, CFL contracts are not guaranteed. “This is not the NHL or Major League Baseball,” said Buono. But he acknowledged the team will have to “open the wallet” if Lulay has another great season. In 2011, he finished as the CFLs second-leading passer with 4,815 yards on 342 completions and tied for the CFL lead with 32 TD passes. Lulay was also effective on the ground. He ranked second among quarterbacks in rushing yards, scampering for 391 yards on 47 attempts including 14 gains of 10 or more yards. Following veteran Jarious Jacksons release and subsequent signing as a free agent with the Toronto Argonauts, Lulay is now B.C.s most experienced quarterback. “It will be a different atmosphere, a different feel among the quarterbacks, because all of a sudden, Im the oldest guy in the room,” said Lulay. “So that will be a change. But thats just part of the game.” But Lulay is confident that Mike Reilly, who has moved into the No. 2 spot from No. 3 is an effective backup. The two have provided good feedback to each other and have become close friends. Lulay also expects to take on more of a leadership role with the team following the departure of Jackson, who was a captain despite his backup status. “Thats kind of a natural spot for me,” said Lulay. “Honestly, I feel comfortable being in that leadership position and, by nature, the quarterback is one of the leaders.” By locking up Lulay, the Lions now have three pivots under contract. The third is Corey Leonard, who is entering his second season with the club. Ideally, said Buono, the club would like to have five quarterbacks at training camp, which begins at the end of May in Kamloops, B.C., and keep four. The Lions held two free-agnt camps in Las Vegas and Los Angeles in March, and Buono hopes to sign one or two quarterbacks who attended. But he does not plan to draft a Canadian university passer, because that would require making him a high selection. And, barring injury, Lulay is unlikely to be unseated as the starter in the near future. Notes: Buono said the club still has salary cap space to sign a free agent, but is not interested in any available CFL veterans. ... The GM would like to invite Leonard to the teams rookie camp, to be held before the main training camp, in order to give him more practice time. But Leonard, a 24-year-old University of Houston product, is not bound to attend. ... B.C. caught a break when all-star offensive lineman Jovan Olafioye signed with the NFLs St. Louis Rams but had the deal rescinded because of an undisclosed health issue. He has subsequently been medically cleared to play with the Lions.) ’ ’ ’
