first two teams at Euro 2012 advance into the second round as Group leader
Russia takes on Greece and co-host Poland battles Czech Republic. While all four
teams hold their fates in their own hands, Russia has the advantage by virtue of
collecting four points in the opening two games. Russia will advance into the
second round with just a point against Greece, no matter the outcome in the
other game.  If they are able to earn their second win of the tournament they
will be assured of top spot in Group A. Greece will also advance into the second
round with a win as they would hold the head-to-head advantage over Russia if
there is a winner in the other game and the goal differential advantage over
Czech Republic if that game ends in a draw. The Czech Republic can advance with
a victory. They can also advance with a draw unless Greece upsets Russia. Should
the Czechs tie and Greece wins, then both nations along with Russia would have
four points, and it would come down to goal differential to decide which two
countries would advance. For co-host Poland its much more simple, win and they
are in, draw or lose and their tournament is over. Russias Alan Dzagoev has been
one of the stars of the tournament scoring three of the five goals Russia has
used to top Group A. His third goal, which was scored in Russias second game,
was cancelled out by a brilliant marker from Polands Jakub Blaszczykowski
earning a point for each team. Russias rampant attack in the opening 4-1 win
over the Czechs was largely muzzled by a well-organized Polish defence. “When we
went 1-0 up, I thought wed get more space like we did against the Czech
Republic, but that didnt happen,” said Russian head coach Dick Advocaat. “We
lost the ball too fast when we were going forward and they could counter. We
left the field too open.” If Greece is planning to overcome that Russian
pressure they will need a better start than the one that felled them in their
second game against Czech Republic. Greece goalkeeper Costas Chalkias conceded a
goal in the third minute and sixth minute of that contest and though substitute
Fanis Gekas pulled one back in the 53rd minute, they were not able to rally
themselves all the way back into the game. They must now beat one of the
brightest looking teams at Euro 2012 if they plan to make it into the second
round. Greece coach Fernando Santos has hinted that he will make changes to his
starting lineup. “There is a problem with speed, not in running but in
reacting,” said Santos. “Thats the biggest problem were facing, because that is
something players learn young: How to react in a tight space.” Key central
defender Sokrakis Papastathopoulos will return from suspension for the Russia
game. But goalkeeper Costas Chalkias has been ruled out with a left thigh
injury, adding to their problems with injured defender Avraam Papadopoulos
already withdrawn from the tournament. Poland has drawn their first two games of
the tournament and now only a victory will take them into the knockout phase.
They have shown flashes of brilliance in this tournament, taking the early lead
in their first game against Greece and scoring on the counter attack after
falling behind to Russia. In fact it is the strong defensive formation that they
showed against the group leader followed by breaking and converting a rare
chance that has them in any position to advance in the first place. “I think we
deserve praise because all of us put a lot into this match,” said goal scorer
Blaszczykowski. “The tactics we set up before the match we carried out 100 per
cent.” The wild card team in this group has been Czech Republic, as they were
torn apart in their opener against Russia yet looked so brilliant in the opening
minutes of their 2-1 victory over Greece. Vaclav Pilars goal against Greece
turned out to be the winner and was also his second marker of the tournament, he
could prove to be a very important player against Poland in the group finale.
“This was a big goal for me, and its great for the team,” said Pilar. “I went in
very hard to meet Gebre Selassies cross and got to the ball with my knee.” Czech
Republic captain Tomas Rosicky remains doubtful after injuring his Achilles
tendon during Tuesdays win, he had to be substituted after the first half. There
was also some doubt about the availability of their first choice keeper Petr
Cech due to a shoulder injury but he is satisfied that his condition has
improved for Saturdays game and said “I should be 100 per cent fit for the

made history. Some of the players she was officiating made it look ugly. Eastin
became the first woman to officiate an NFL game, serving as the line judge in
the San Diego Chargers 21-13 preseason victory over the Green Bay Packers on
Thursday night. “I think its exciting for her,” said Chargers coach Norv Turner,
who took a photo with Eastin before the game. “She was confident and in
control.” The preseason opener for both teams was predictably sloppy at times,
filled with fumbles, interceptions and missed assignments. Philip Rivers had a
touchdown, an interception and a fumble in limited action for the Chargers (No.
16 in the AP Pro32). Rookie Jarrett Lee got most of the snaps, throwing for 235
yards and a touchdown. Aaron Rodgers had an interception and a fumble in three
series for the Packers (No. 1). “We didnt play as well as we want to, but its
preseason,” Rodgers said. Eastin turned it into a history-making event merely
with her presence. Among a group of replacement officials working games while
the regular refs are locked out, Eastin was dwarfed by the players on San Diegos
sideline and had a camera following her every move before the game. A 16-year
officiating veteran, she seemed at ease with the spotlight, staying steady among
the giants and the national spotlight. Turner took a picture with her for
posteritys sake, and Chargers tackle Jeromey Clary and linebacker Antwan Barnes
each sought her out just before the opening kickoff, shaking her hand and saying
a few words. Once the game started, it was almost as if she wasnt there—the
ultimate compliment for an official. “I thought she did a good job of
communicating,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. Eastins game cap is headed to
the Pro Football Hall of Fame after her first NFL game. Many of the players
still need some work after their first preseason performances. Rodgers fumbled
on Green Bays first series, setting up a 23-yard touchdown pass from Rivers to
Antonio Gates. Green Bays Diondre Borel fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the
Chargers recovered, but Tramon Williams stepped in front of Robert Meacham to
intercept Rivers pass two plays later. The Chargers also lost a fumble on a
handoff exchange between Rivers and Michael Hayes on the first play of the next
series. Rivers was 3 for 5 for 37 yards and was done after his fumble. Rodgers
threw for 16 yards on 2-of-8 passing. Worse yet were some key injuries. Green
Bay entered the game with 18 players not in uniform and most were because of
injuries, including receiver Greg Jennings and left tackle Maarshall Newhouse.

early in the first quarter when starting linebacker Desmond Bishop went down
after a group of players fell on his right leg while he was finishing a tackle.
He was unable to put any weight on his leg while being helped to the sideline.
The Chargers lost starting running back Ryan Mathews after he broke his clavicle
on his first carry of the preseason. Hes scheduled to have surgery on Friday and
is expected to be out 4-to-6 weeks. “Its disappointing,” Rivers said. “You hate
it for him, first of all, and then obviously it affects the team. Its just
unfortunate—first carry of the season—but hell still bounce back and have
a great year.” Lee, who was undrafted out of LSU, hit Vincent Brown on a 27-yard
touchdown pass in the second quarter and also helped set up Curtis Brinkleys
1-yard dive that made it 21-13 with just under 2 minutes left. He finished 15 of
22. Graham Harrell, trying to solidify his spot as the No. 2 quarterback behind
Rodgers, had some bad misses early. But he hit Randall Cobb on a 23-yard pass
that set up a 3-yard touchdown between the two in the closing seconds of the
first half and finished 15 of 27 for 135 yards. “We did some good things at
times and then we went through some rough patches,” Harrellsaid. “Hopefully, we
will get better.” Replacement officials are working games for the first time in
11 years and have 16 this weekend, including six Thursday night. There have
already been some shaky moments. The crew working the Hall of Fame game last
Sunday had mixed reviews and fans in Buffalo booed replacement officials
Thursday night after they muffed a touchback call in a game against Washington.
Eastin didnt seem to have any trouble in her first NFL game. The 42-year-old
from Tempe, Ariz., is a referee in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, college
footballs second-highest level, and owns a company that trains basketball and
football officials. Wearing No. 27 on the back of her officials uniform, Eastin
wasnt involved in many calls until flagging San Diegos Patrick Doyle for holding
in the third quarter. She heard a few boos from the hometown crowd in the fourth
period on a pass interference call on Chargers safety Corey Lynch—she
appeared to get it right—and signalled touchdown when Green Bays Marc Tyler
scored on a 1-yard run. Green Bay failed on the 2-point conversion, keeping the
Chargers up 14-13. Eastin signalled TD again when Brinkley scored later, but had
a relatively quiet night overall, which, in the world of officiating, can be a
