Hey guys..

Any chance of a 3G or CDMA module for the BUG? That would really rock my world.

This sounds a good idea. Is there any reason why this king of module would’nt work ?

I vote for GSM if a phone module is produced…

I have been holding off for now on a purchase but if there were a GSM module that accepted a SIM - I’d buy it in an instant.

Please let us know of any possibility.

Hey Guys,

The good news is these types of modules are under consideration. The bad news is I don’t have any further details for you.

I will say that your feedback is key in what modules we will developing in the future. At some point we plan on making this process more formal (e.g. polls).

I vote of GSM and SIM too. :D
Maybe this modules can include GSM CDMA and 3G .

Thanks Brian,
I feel we need a "universal" cellular module. Or if not universal at least handles the most popular cellular network standards. I want a module that will operate in several different standards. This way when I get horrible network or customer service from one celluar carrier I can immediately switch to another celluar provider without having to buy a different celluar module.

It has ALWAYS angered me that for me to switch cellular carriers that I needed to get a new phone. I buy the top end PDA phones, and that created a high artifical barrier to switching providers. TommyO

Thanks Brian,
I feel we need a "universal" cellular module.

The problem with that is: there is no such thing as a universal cellular service.

There's three cellular flavors (mainly) left in the world:

GSM -- Dominates Europe, and has a presence in the US and Canada; uses SIM cards to identify the device to the network (for determining the end point of a call, for billing, etc.). This makes it easy to use GSM devices on any carrier (assuming frequency compatibility), because all of the carrier looks for is their SIM cards -- so get a SIM card from the carrier, plug it into your device, and you're mostly ready to go (minus any carrier specific special features). For 3G data (UMTS/HSPA*), the US has two frequencies (one used by AT&T, one used by T-Mobile), and then Europe has a third frequency. (* HSPA = collective term for HSDPA & HSUPA)

CDMA - Mainly in use in East Asia (Korea and China), and the US (Sprint and Verizon). Has a very fast data service (EVDO). Instead of a SIM card, each CDMA device has a unique ID (ESN number) to identify itself to a carrier. This makes devices less portable than GSM devices as the ESN has to be recognized by a carrier in order to use the device with that carrier.

iDEN - the old NexTel protocol, used by a couple small carriers, and emergency services. Sprint is trying to retire it in favor of their CDMA network, but the push-to-talk feature has been hard to accurately replicate on non-iDEN service. Has lousy slow data service (WiDEN), and probably wont ever evolve to a faster data service.

I personally think you'll need to have 3 or 4 module variants. I'd love to see each module have:

1) a network interface, so that the bugbase can communicate to the internet via the module's data service (GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA on a GSM module, 1xRTT/EVDO on the CDMA module, etc.).

2) ability to utilize the voice interface (probably via drivers for a small SIP server that would be run on the bugbase, that way you could use a SIP software client on the bugbase, or a SIP handset, via Wifi to the bugbase)

3) ability to use the SMS/MMS interface (as above, only using a Jabber/XMSS daemon, then you'd just talk to it using any standard jabber client).

4) bluetooth with profiles for DUN, PAN, HDI, hands-free, etc. So that you can support both hosts and devices (ex: use the bugbase as a WWAN-Modem for your laptop, by having the bugbase act as a DUN or PAN host; OR have the bugbase's QWERTY module act as a bluetooth keyboard by using the modele's HDI profile in device mode).

5) a 2.5mm audio jack, for using wired headsets (for directly accessing the voice capabilities of the module).

The 3 or 4 modules variants I envision are:

A) GSM family (with GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and HSPA support, preferably with support for all 3 frequency bands for UMTS/HSPA).

B) CDMA family (with support for 1xRTT, EVDO r0, and EVDO r1)

C) WiMAX (probably data only, as I don't know if WiMAX has actual voice, as opposed to just assuming you'll run some VOIP service, like Skype or something) (WiMAX, and a Korean variant called WiBro, are already well established in Korea, and are starting early deployment in the US with Sprint a smaller carrier whose name I forget; I think Rogers, in Canada, is already offering it as well).

D) LTE (might not require a separate module, might be something you'd add on to #A and #B as a new, 4G, data interface (LTE is mostly being adopted by GSM providers ... except Verizon, a CDMA carrier, is also adopting it); LTE is still in development, it hasn't been actually deployed for commercial use anywhere that I'm aware of)

(don't bother with an iDEN/WiDEN module)

Qualcom does have a chipset out there that might let you combine #A and #B, but I don't know if will get upgraded to support WiMAX and LTE in the future. Further, I don't know if the Qualcom chipset supports European frequency bands, nor the T-Mobile data band. So, that could, in theory, help make a "universal module", but that locks you into using Qualcom, and leaves some open questions. Also, I think the Qualcom chipset has Wifi support (don't know about bluetooth). That might be useful for the Hiro Protagonist version of the bugbase. Might also help with using the device as a wifi access point (if the production bugbase can't do that), and/or UMA phone support (ability to use a cell phone as a wifi voip phone, like with T-Mobile USA's "hotspot at home" phones).

I think just starting with modules #A and #B would be a good start, and then in a year or two upgrading them to reflect whatever has happened with the evolution of WiMAX and LTE. But I'd definitely like to see GSM and CDMA modules that have the 5 capabilities I mentioned above.

to a Bluetooth enabled Phone? I think a bluetooth module can be a simpler and faster solution while the cellular module is underconstruction. With BUG and a cellphone, you will have internet connectivity…Just a thought! :)

Thanks for the great and detailed post johnkzin.

I do want to restate my case though. I still look forward to the day when one phone\device can emulate all or most of the popular cellular technologies.

I know this next statement is a way over simplified analogy, but here goes. Just imagine if I had to have 2 radios in my car – one for AM and one for FM, just because no-one had combined them? Or even worse, what if I had to have the two radios, and then a completely separate CD player as well?

I still think there is great utlility to be had for a universal cellphone unit. If only individual cell technology bug modules are available I would of course just buy the one I needed, but I’d rather have the universal one. That way I could more easily tell my carrier to go stick it when they give me crappy service. Thanks, Tom

TommyO: I’m not saying it’s not a worthy ideal/goal, I’m just pointing out that it might not be an affordable nor achievable goal for a while yet. The main question is: whether or not Qualcom has a chipset that does all 3 (GSM, CDMA, WiMAX) of the current WWAN technologies, and/or has in the works one that adds LTE to that list.

If they do, then it’s a no brainer. If they don’t, then I think it would be more realizable to focus on 1 module per technology. Or perhaps one for GSM+CDMA, one for WiMAX, and one for LTE (since I think Qualcom DOES have a GSM+CDMA chipset).

And, yes, I’d love to see it handle ALL aspects of phone functionality, not just data.

I’m a Moblogger. This development system has great potential for the moblogger who wants more than the average phone can provide. But without a gsm/hspa module, it is severely limited. A keypad or qwerty keyboard would also be very usefull but that can be worked around by using the breakout board. :)

VIA the Von Hippel’s USB module you can use many off-the-shelf dongles.  The 3G module has been shelved here due to certification concerns.
