Tyler Clary upset Olympic and world champion backstroke Ryan Lochte in the mens
200m backstroke on Thursday evening, out-swimming his American teammate to win
the first gold medal of his Olympic career. Whitney Mercilus Jersey .  Lochte was the
heavy favourite to win the event, having won gold at both the 2008 Olympic Games
as well as the 2011 World Championships.  The question of Thursday night was
supposed to be whether the 27-year-old would have anything left, after winning
the mens 200m backstroke, to pull off a second win in the mens 200m IM just a
half hour later. Instead, Lochte finished third and eliminated any chance of
winning the double.  Clary picked up gold in an Olympic record time of one
minute, 53.41 seconds. Ryosuke Irie of Japan was second in 1:53.78 while Lochte
