I was just looking through the site and I realized that you are running java on an ARM. I wasn’t aware yet of a JVM that was available for ARM. Can you provide me with the details on it? Is it fully featured? Where can I download it from?

We use the Phoneme project which is a fully open source VM/library stack based on the CVM.

There is also the CacaoVM (different from the CVM), JamVM and Kaffe. The IcedTea project recently started booting on ARM, but that is on the bleeding edge.

Phoneme is encumbered by the GPL since it does not have the "ClassPath" exception. This means that if any code is developed for the Bug for distribution, it must also be GPL’d (or a compatible license).

The best solution we’ve found so far for running Java code on ARM without the GPL encumbrance is to convert it to dot NET using IKVM and run it on the Mono framework. Mono’s performance is very good and JIT enhanced. I haven’t benchmarked it against PhoneME, but it’s much faster than Jam or Sable which are pure interpreters.

Mono would also provide you with the benefit of dot NET programming on the Bug.

We could, potentially, provide you with a tool that would allow drag and drop programming of the Bug, and so let you get rid of some of the "Must Know Java" warnings, but we’d need to avoid the GPL traps. Our focus is primarily on Factory Automation, but that’s just a function of the JavaBeans we provide, Bug appropriate beans could be created. Drop me a line off-line if this might be of interest.

I am interested in PhoneME, Cacao/OpenJDK flavours on Beagleboard
with Angstrom distribution. Can you please provide more information/how
to get this cross-compiled on ubuntu.

Thank you for the reply.

I am have read the tutorial for building angstrom but some how couldn’t not build the targets correcty. Now, am able to build cacao, jamVM, phoneme-advanced personal profile correcty and resulting in .ipk files which I installed manually on target platform (Beagleboard) using Opkg tool.

I have also tested it with my HelloWorld java program successfully. But I wasn’t able to run java application using swing module. Can you throw some light on it??
