WASHINGTON —It took 24 witnesses over 19 days of testimony for prosecutors to
make their case against Roger Clemens, with three jurors and two minor pieces of
the indictment dismissed by the time they were done. Dez Bryant Black Jersey . With the
overlong-running trial now in its seventh week and Clemens lawyers starting to
take their turn, the case remains centred on the credibility of one person—
Brian McNamee. The government rested Tuesday in the perjury trial of the
seven-time Cy Young Award winner, wrapping up with a witness from Wall Street
and two from the FBI. Two invoked the name of McNamee, the longtime Clemens
strength coach who says he injected the ex-pitcher with steroids in 1998, 2000
and 2001 and with human growth hormone in 2000. The defence is expected to take
about two weeks to call its witnesses. The trial has already exceeded the
original estimate of four to six weeks stated by the judge at the start of jury
selection. Clemens is charged with two counts of perjury, three counts of making
false statements and one count of obstruction of Congress. All relate to his
testimony at a hearing in February 2008 and his deposition that preceded it. The
heart of the case is the allegation that Clemens lied when he said he had never
used steroids or HGH, but the obstruction count included 15 statements, or
“acts,” in which Clemens is alleged to have misled Congress on a variety of
issues. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton dismissed two of those acts Tuesday.
The first dismissed act dealt with Clemens claim that he had “no idea” that
former Sen. George Mitchell wanted to talk with him in preparation for the 2007
Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball. The government couldnt prove otherwise
because some of its evidence was ruled inadmissible due to rules over
attorney-client privilege. The second dismissed act deals with Clemens statement
in his 2008 deposition that: “I couldnt tell you the first thing about (HGH).”
The judge said that statement could be misinterpreted because it was asked in
the context of whether Clemens had ever done any research into HGH. Thirteen
alleged misleading statements remain in the charges. The government only needs
to prove one to gain a conviction for obstruction of Congress. Theres something
the trial definitely cant afford to keep losing: jurors. Two have been dismissed
for sleeping during the proceedings, and a third was lost Tuesday following the
death of her mother. Theres only one alternate left. “So Id ask everybody to
stay healthy and available,” Walton told the remaining 13. Many of them smiled
or laughed. One of the governments final witnesses was Anthony Corso, one of
McNamees so-called “Wall Street clients” who worked out with the strength coach
in Manhattan. Corso related a pair of conversations meant to show that McNamee
didnt start making up allegations and fabricating evidence against Clemens to
placate federal investigators in 2007. “Mr. McNamee had mentioned that Mr.
Clemens was one of the athletes that was getting positive results from” HGH,
said Corso, recalling a conversation from around 2002. A key piece of evidence
in the trial is medical waste from an alleged 2001 steroids injection of Clemens
that McNamee said he saved in a beer can and FedEx box. Corso, a large,
blunt-spoken New Yorker who works as a managing partner in a consulting firm,
recalled asking McNamee around 2005 about a newspaper story concerning
performance-enhancing drugs. “Im not going to get thrown under the bus because
Ive taken care of it,” Corso remembered McNamee saying. “He said he had saved
some syringes and thrown them in a beer can, and thrown them in a FedEx box.”
Corso didnt directly link Clemens to that statement, a fact reinforced by a
question from a juror. That forced the government to start reading Corsos grand
jury testimony from two years ago, when Corso quoted McNamee as saying, “I saved
two syringes that I used on Roger.” Corso said he now cant recall whether
McNamee used Clemens name in connection with the syringes or not. FBI expert
Eric Pokorak then testified that the mouth of the beer can didnt contain Clemens
DNA and might have contained McNamees, evidence that could help or hurt both
sides. The beer can allegedly came from Clemens apartment, but the government
can now argue that if Clemens didnt drink the beer, then his DNA couldnt have
contaminated the evidence McNamee kept inside it. FBI toxicologist Cynthia
Morris-Kukoski completed the governments case by testifying about the various
types of vitamin B12. Clemens has said that he received B12 injections from
McNamee—instead of steroids or HGH. The defence called two witnesses late in
the afternoon. Former major leaguer and longtime Clemens friend Mike Capel
testified about Clemens strong work ethic. One of Clemens former high school
teammates, Todd Howey, did the same. “Ive yet to see anybody work like
Roger Clemens,” Howey said. The trial has also meant a lot of hard work for
Walton, who didnt take it well when Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin mentioned that
the judge was getting paid the “big bucks.” “I dont get paid big bucks,” Walton
said. “We havent gotten a pay raise in 20 years. ... Its a good thing Im married

Rory McIlroy has gone from being a rookie in the Ryder Cup to a marked man at
Medinah. McIlroy is the first European in nearly 20 years to go into the Ryder
Cup as the No. 1 player in the world, although the star power of this
23-year-old from Northern Ireland is defined by much more than a computer
ranking. He already has won two majors, with a record score in the U.S. Open
last year at Congressional and a record margin at the PGA Championship last
month at Kiawah Island. His four wins this year are the most of anyone in the
world, all against the strongest fields. So it was no surprise when Jim Furyk
referred to Boy Wonder as the “present day Tiger Woods” and a “marked man” at
this Ryder Cup. Thats the role Woods played for so many years in these matches
when he dominated golf. There was a feeling among Europeans that beating Woods
was worth more than one point because of the emotional lift it gave the rest of
the team. McIlroy doesnt see it that way. “This week Im not the No. 1 player in
the world,” he said Wednesday. “Im one person in a 12-man team, and thats it.
Its a team effort. Theres 12 guys all striving toward the same goal. Im just
part of that.” But even in this team competition, its easy to get wrapped in a
single star, as it was for Woods. Theres only one way to keep score in the Ryder
Cup, though its tempting to make individuals accountable. Even when Woods was at
his best, he still could only deliver a maximum of five points if he played
every match. He never came close, and didnt even produce a winning record until
his fifth Ryder Cup. “I dont have a number. I dont have a total,” McIlroy said.
“I think with the U.S. playing here at home, I think they are the favourites.
Its a very strong team. So we know we have got to go out there and play very,
very well to have a chance. So if I play on Friday morning, I just want to get
my point and then take it from there.” Wednesday brought the Ryder Cup one day
closer to the start of matches that are growing in anticipation. Both teams look
strong on paper, with all 24 players among the top 35 in the world. The
Americans are loaded with experience behind Woods, Furyk and Phil Mickelson.
Europe has only one Ryder Cup rookie, Nicolas Colsaerts, and has the experience
when it comes to winning. It has captured the cup six of the last eight times.
And while captains Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal have preached civility

Friday morning. “Its not that we dont like each other,” the Englishman said. “We

four American rookies is Brandt Snedeker, coming off an $11.44 million payday

a practice session of foursomes, keeping together the same partnerships he had
the previous day. Olazabal mixed up his team ever so slightly, with Luke Donald
and Sergio Garcia together. They are 4-0 in foursomes. Both teams played only
nine holes, trying to conserve energy for the most dynamic three days in golf.
Even for such a short practice sessions, fans poured into Medinah and set a tone
for the noise level, chanting, “USA! USA!” just for players leaving the practice
range. McIlroy, for all his ability, is so unfailingly polite and respectful
that everyone likes him. Woods calls him “such a great kid.” The gallery adores
him. Perhaps for the first time in his career, he might not get a lot of love
from the other side of the ropes. “I expect it to be loud. I expect them to
cheer for them,” McIlroy said. “Hopefully, I wont get heckled, but if I do, then
youve just got to stay calm and be focused on the golf and just get on with it.”
He could not think of a time when he has heard it from a heckler. “But just
because of my hair,” McIlroy said, touching his curly brown locks. “Nothing too
insulting.” As for the notion that he has the biggest target on the back of his
European uniform? McIlroy says thats nothing more than a compliment. Love doesnt
buy into the idea that beating McIlroy is any better than beating a team that
features Francesco Molinari or Martin Kaymer. The captain has wondered if a loss
by any of his top players would be a boost for Europe, “but I hadnt really
looked at it from their side.” “I dont know if thats worth scratching my head
over,” Love said. “I didnt go to bed until 2:30 already thinking about my team.
If I had to think about their team, I wouldnt get any sleep, because theyre as
strong as we are.” Steve Stricker sees it differently. He has become Woods
favourite partner over the last three years. They went undefeated in the
Presidents Cup at Harding Park in 2009, and were 2-1 as a partnership at Wales
in the last Ryder Cup. Stricker has noticed an increase in emotion when playing
against Woods, and he believes it will be the same way for McIlroy. “When Tiger
was at the top of his game and No. 1 in the world for all those weeks, he was a
marked man,” Stricker said. “Rory is the guy thats playing the best golf in the
world right now, and I agree that hes a guy we all want to beat. ... Whoever it
may be, the No. 1 player in the world, playing the best golf in the world, were
going to want to beat that player no matter who it is. And it so happens to be
