METAIRIE, La. Elite Joe Flacco Jersey . —Chase Daniel has
completed 75 per cent of his passes during his first three years in the NFL,
which would rank him among the leagues top quarterbacks if not for the fact that
hes only thrown eight passes. Experienced he is not, having completed a career
total of six passes for 45 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. And as
Drew Brees understudy, hes never had an opportunity to practice as the
first-team quarterback—though that could change next week. With Brees staying
away from Saints headquarters during protracted contract negotiations, Daniel
has been penciled in to take first-team snaps when New Orleans begins its first
off-season practices, known as organized team activities, on Tuesday. Daniels
eagerness is undeniable, but he remains mindful of the big picture in New
Orleans, and his place in it. “First and foremost, we miss Drew. This whole
team, the community, the fans, everybody misses Drew, but we also realize right
now we have to move on without him,” Daniel said. “Is a deal going to get done?
Yes, I have faith. But right now its a great opportunity for myself to go in,
show the type of skills Ive (gained) ... and really earn the trust of the guys.
“Im looking forward to it,” Daniel continued. “Obviously, Drew runs the ship. Im
just here to get ready.” The 6-foot, 225-pound Daniel, wholl turn 26 on Oct. 7,
was plucked off waivers by Saints head coach Sean Payton at the end of 2009
training camp, which Daniel, then a rookie, had spent with the Washington
Redskins. Daniel never played in his rookie year, when he was the Saints third
quarterback behind Mark Brunell and spent most of the season on the practice
squad. He moved into the second-string spot in 2010, since which time he also
has been the holder on field goals. All the while, he has watched and learned
from Brees, seeking to match his intensity at practice while mirroring his work
ethic and preparation. Apparently, even some of Brees mannerisms have rubbed
off. “Its funny when you kind of listen to him and youre like, Is this Drew or
is this Chase?” Saints veteran receiver Lance Moore said. “Theres a lot of
things that are similar. You kind of listen to him and the way he runs the
drills and stuff like that and gets guys organized on the field. You can tell
hes been paying close attention to what Drews been doing.” Despite Daniels
relative lack of regular season action, he has seen his share of preseason snaps
the past two seasons and his teammates are well aware that, like Brees, Daniel
was a Heisman Trophy finalist. Daniel went 30-11 at Missouri, where he was the
first QB to throw for 3,000 or more yards in three straight seasons, twice
surpassing the 4,300-yard mark and setting school records in the process. “He
hasnt played more (NFL) ball than a lot of the guys that are out there, but he
definitely commands guys attention and hes got confidence out there, so its easy
to go out there and play with him,” Moore said. “Hes not a slouch. He wouldnt be
here if he was a slouch.” Offensive co-ordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. said next
weeks OTAs wont be run any differently than they would if Brees were present.
The offence will work on the same volume of plays. So Daniel should get a
genuine sense of what its like to practice as the No. 1 QB —and a shot to show
coaches he can handle it. “This will be an opportunity for him and he knows it,”
Carmichael said. Daniel regrets, however, that he wont be working with Payton,
the coach who brought him to New Orleans and who has monitored his career since
high school in Texas, back when Payton was a Dallas Cowboys assistant. Payton
has been suspended the entire season in connection with the NFLs bounty
investigation of the club. “I have a pretty special bond with (Payton), as I do
with Drew, so to have those two guys not here, its tough,” Daniel said. “But I
tell you what, Pete Carmichael and (quarterbacks coach) Joe Lombardi, theyve
done an excellent job teaching me the ins and outs … and moving forward Im
very comfortable with Pete.” While Daniel cannot speak to Payton because of the
coachs suspension terms, he has kept in touch with Brees. “He just says, Steer
the ship,” Daniel said. “It hurts him not to be there. It really does. Were like
family to him and hes family to us and we miss him … but he also realizes that
this is a business and he has to get a deal done first.” Until then, Daniel
stands to get some valuable experience. Kelechi Osemele Jersey . The 27-year-old has
played in 23 NHL games with the Canucks and the Calgary Flames, collecting 37
penalty minutes. Tyrod Taylor Jersey .J. Smith. Ron Wolf, the
former Green Bay Packers GM whos serving as a consultant for Chargers President
Dean Spanos, said in a conference call Wednesday that the first interview was
Tuesday in San Diego. http://www.nflravensgearshop.com/torrey-smith-jersey/
. He received the cold shoulder in the San Francisco dugout only briefly before
being mobbed by Pablo Sandoval and others, another highlight in what is shaping
up to be a stellar season for the young left-hander. Black Ray Rice Jersey . Mariner was an
assistant coach for the Revolution from 2004 to 2009 before taking a coaching
job Plymouth Argyle in England. He is now completely focused on the plight of
Toronto FC —a team that is still looking for its first win since he took the
helm. Black Dennis Pitta Jersey . He wasnt talking
about their play, though, after the Red Sox failed for the fourth time this
season to eclipse the .500 mark with a 7-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday
night.ATLANTA—Jason Hammel just wanted go deep into the game and give
Baltimores bullpen some rest. He nearly got his first no-hitter in the process.
Hammel pitched a one-hitter for his first career shutout, allowing only
Jason Heywards two-out single in the seventh inning, and the Orioles beat the
Atlanta Braves 5-0 on Saturday night. “A no-hitter wouldve been nice, but it
gave the bullpen the night off,” Hammel said. “I heard from them. Not one
bullpen pitch thrown. Thats huge because weve been taxing them pretty good.”
There have already been five no-hitters in the majors this season, including
three this month, and Hammel made a strong bid to add to the list. He struck out
eight and walked two, throwing 65 of 102 pitches for strikes. Brian Roberts
drove in three runs for the Orioles, who have won six of seven. Atlanta pitcher
Brandon Beachy (5-5) left in the fourth inning with right elbow soreness. The
major leagues ERA leader allowed no hits and one run, struck out five and walked
one. The Braves have lost five of six. Hammel (7-2) had been struggling on the
road, entering with a 1-1 record and a 4.76 ERA in his previous three starts
away from Camden Yards. But he settled down after walking Dan Uggla on four
pitches to begin the second. Hammel retired the next 17 batters he faced before
walking Uggla again with two out in the seventh. Heyward followed with a clean
single to left field, but Eric Hinske flied out to end the inning. Hammel got
through the ninth in six pitches, retiring Michael Bourn on a flyout and
Martin Prado and Brian McCann on groundouts before receiving congratulations
from his teammates. The Baltimore dugout started buzzing as Hammel ended the
fifth with a no-hitter intact. “A lot of guys get in a different mental frame,
but you could tell that he didnt,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “I think
everybody kind of knew what was going on. Guys were starting to scatter in the
dugout, and I noticed guys standing in the same place, including me.” Acquired
in the February trade that sent Jeremy Guthrie to Colorado, Hammel had pitched
poorly against Atlanta before Saturday, going 0-3 with 9.00 ERA in five career
starts overall and 0-2 with a 11.74 ERA in two starts at Turner Field. “I had a
terrible track record against the Braves,” Hammel said. “These guys have given
me nightmares, especially here at Turner Field. Im very excited to get out of
here with a win. Ray Rice Vapor Jersey. . They put a good team
on the field every year.” After walking Chris Davis on six pitches with two outs
in the fourth, Beachy stopped in front of the mound and signalled to catcher
Brian McCann that he was injured. He walked off the field during a mound visit
from manager Fredi Gonzalez. Beachy, who made 40 of his 57 pitches for strikes,
retired his first 11 batters. He now has a 2.00 ERA. “Were going to get the MRI
and hope for the best on the results,” Beachy said. “Its really frustrating. Ive
had a lot of success when Ive felt good this year. I feel like Im in a position
where I know more. I know what Im trying to do and Im doing it, when I
physically can.” Anthony Varvaro came in and walked Adam Jones and Matt Wieters
to load the bases. Mark Reynolds then hit a two-run single to give the Orioles a
2-0 lead. Baltimore went ahead 3-0 in the fifth when Roberts single off Varvaro
scored Steve Pearce from second. Cristhian Martinez, the third Atlanta pitcher,
worked a scoreless sixth before Roberts lined a two-run single to right. Hammel,
who took a no-hitter into the eighth inning April 8 before beating the Minnesota
Twins 3-1, said his bullpen session gave him no idea he would one-hit the
Braves. “I actually had a terrible bullpen, believe it or not,” he said. “I was
kind of feeling my way through the first two innings and then obviously just
carried it on and found a pretty good groove.” NOTES: It was Hammels second
career complete game and first since he pitched eight innings in the Rockies 1-0
loss at the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 1, 2009. ... Bourn went 0 for 4 to snap
a career-high 14-game hitting streak. ... Gonzalez said before the game that
Chipper Jones, who was held out with a swollen left knee, will be in the lineup
at 3B on Sunday. ... Gonzalez likely will use Jones as a designated hitter when
Atlanta visits the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox next week. ... Atlanta 1B
Freddie Freeman was out of the lineup with a swollen knuckle on his left index
finger. ... Showalter said RF Nick Markakis, who underwent right wrist surgery
on June 1, will visit a doctor on Friday for a standard checkup. Markakis was
initially expected to miss three to four weeks. ... Roberts is expected to get a
