At line 49 of HotkeyTesterServiceTracker.doStart(), it does:

key = statusBar.acquireRegion(1);

However this returns null (for me anyway). I don’t ever see a button press result in a message on the status bar (on OS X, Windows XP or knoppmyth Linux 2.6.18.

aquireRegion() returns null if no additional StatusBar space is available. If you’re running HelloWorld or another program that uses the StatusBar, it’s probably taking up all the space and Hotkey Tester is unable to get a section of the StatusBar. Try running Hotkey Tester in a fresh workspace, and let me know if you continue to have troubles.

As a side note, the current StatusBar implementation is not using the proper font, and so the amount of characters that can be utilized on the Virtual BUG will most likely differ from what we will have on the BUG. When we determine the core font we will use the Virtual BUG will be updated accordingly.
