BOSTON —The Tampa Bay Rays needed a strong pitching performance to avoid a four-game sweep by the hot-hitting Boston Red Sox. Andrew Luck Elite Jersey . They got it from James Shields. Shields allowed four hits—all singles—in 8 1-3 innings, and the Rays beat Boston 1-0 Monday after being outscored 31-11 by the Red Sox in the previous three games. “It was my job to stop the bleeding,” Shields said. “We had a rough three games and they were hot. They were swinging the bats pretty well.” Boston had a chance to tie it in the ninth when Shields (2-0) left after walking Dustin Pedroia. Fernando Rodney got his fourth save in four opportunities when he retired Adrian Gonzalez on a groundout that sent Pedroia to second, walked David Ortiz intentionally, then got Cody Ross on a called third strike. Ross slammed his helmet and argued with home-plate umpire Larry Vanover that the last two pitches should have been balls. “To me its unacceptable,” Ross said. “If Im up there striking out every at-bat, Im going to get benched. Theyre are not accountable.” The only run came when Daniel Bard (0-2) walked Evan Longoria on four pitches with the bases loaded in the seventh. The traditional Patriots Day home game began at 11:04 a.m. The holiday observed in Massachusetts and Maine marks Paul Reveres ride and the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. “We absolutely needed something like that today. James did not disappoint,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “I really liked the bounce back (at) 11 oclock in the morning. After losing three games in a row here, a lot of teams would give up at that point. Our guys didnt.” The loss was Bobby Valentines first at Fenway Park as Bostons manager. Fans booed when he went back to the dugout after lifting Bard for Justin Thomas following the run-scoring walk. Bard also walked the previous batter, Carlos Pena, on four pitches. “It was the wrong decision, obviously,” Valentine said. “I wanted to let him know right there that I thought he could get himself out of a jam.” The boos likely were prompted by an interview aired on WHDH-TV Sunday night in which Valentine questioned Kevin Youkilis commitment to the game. He apologized to his third baseman, a fan favourite, on Monday. Valentine had said he didnt think Youkilis was “as physically or emotionally into the game.” Maddon got his 500th win as a manager, all with Tampa Bay, as the Rays stopped a four-game losing streak. “I just happen to be the steward of this group,” he said. “Better baseball players make you a lot smarter manager.” Shields retired the first four batters before Ross broken-bat single off the pitchers glove. The next six Red Sox made outs before Gonzalez singled to left. He was erased on a double-play grounder in the fourth. Shields walked Nick Punto with two outs in the fifth, allowed singles to Pedroia in the sixth and Ross in the seventh and walked Pedroia in the ninth. Bard gave up three hits through six innings and set down the first two batters in the seventh. Then he lost his control. Sean Rodriguez walked, Desmond Jennings singled and Pena walked, loading the bases. Pitching coach Bob McClure visited Bard and left him in the game. The move backfired as Bard walked Longoria with his 111th pitch. Thats when Valentine went to the mound to lift Bard and was booed on the walk back. “Mac came out and said, Do you want this guy? I wanted him,” said Bard, a converted reliever making his second major-league start. “In hindsight, probably I was tired.” Thomas ended the threat by retiring Luke Scott on a fly to right. This year, the Riders opened with a 43-16 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and followed up by beating the Edmonton Eskimos 17-1. “The guys are buying in,” Hall said. “Hopefully, as the season goes on, everyone will be buying in 100 per cent.” Hall said Saskatchewans defensive coaches have been stressing the importance of “getting some pressure off the edge, and generally just being more consistent with everything we do.” As well, rookie head coach Cory Chamblin has asked his players on both sides of the ball to play hard on every down. “Not just on 30 snaps,” Hall said. “On all 60 snaps.” Hall said so far the work ethic is paying off. “The guys are being rewarded,” he said. “Weve taken a couple of big steps, but there are still some huge steps ahead of us.” One of those steps would be the Lions. “I dont know about this being the stiffest test of the season, because the stiffest test is always the game youre playing in any given week,” Hall said. “But we do know that to get where we want to go, we have to go through B.C., because theyre the defending Grey Cup champions. “The thing is, theyre not invincible. You have to find the chink in their armour, and everybody has one. Superman had kryptonite.” For the Saskatchewan defence, the obvious challenges this week are Lions quarterback Travis Lulay, running back Andrew Harris and slotbacks Geroy Simon and Arland Bruce III. “Plus theyre well-coached, and theyve been through the wars,” Hall said. “Theyre a solidd football team and they know how to win. Coby Fleener Jersey. . “But we have a good team, too. They guys are playing sound football. Theyre giving us a chance to win. Thats all we can ask.” The Saskatchewan offence, meanwhile, will have to handle a Lions defence that has a veteran secondary and mobile linebackers but still depends largely on a front four consisting of ends Khreem Smith and Keron Williams and tackles Khalif Mitchell and Eric Taylor. This is not a good week to be shuffling the offensive line, but a shoulder injury to veteran guard Brendon LaBatte has left the Roughriders no choice. LaBatte will dress for Saturdays game, but according to Chamblin, he will be used only in “an emergency.” Starting at left guard will be rookie Johan Asiata. Because Asiata is an import—one of three on the Roughriders offensive line—Canadian wide receiver Jordan Sisco has been added to the lineup in place of import wide receiver Sinorice Moss, who is now on the one-game injured list. “We have a group than can get the job done,” Chamblin said, adding that the homegrown Sisco “has to show us what he can do.” Just as Chamblin was shrugging off suggestions that this game is an early-season showdown of unbeaten teams, Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant was dismissing the notion that its a matter of Durant versus Lulay. The B.C quarterback has led the Lions to victories of 33-16 over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and 39-36 over the Tiger-Cats. “Hes got his team off to a good start, and thats good for him,” Durant said. “I cant worry about the personal matchups.” Instead, Durant is focused on the Lions defence in general and the front four in particular. “We definitely have to control them up front,” he said. Like Chamblin, Durant expressed confidence in the two new starters, Asiata and Sisco. “Sometimes there are going to be injuries,” he said, “and guys are going to have to step in.” Durant is approaching Saturdays game as something less than a sudden-death showdown. “I wouldnt say its a Grey Cup situation, but its a great opportunity for us,” he said, and then he fielded yet another question about comparisons between him and Lulay. “Hes got a Grey Cup,” Durant said with a smile, “and I dont.” ’ ’ ’
