VIRGINIA WATER, England—Luke Donald was awarded honorary life membership of
the European Tour on Wednesday, the latest of a string of accolades for the
Englishman following his stellar 2011 season. Stephon Gilmore Jersey . However, there is
still a gap on his mantle piece for the biggest prize of all. “Im not going to
shy away from it. Thats the one thing missing on my resume – I want to win
majors,” Donald said. The U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco next
month offers him a 36th chance to end his drought at majors, which would allow
him to shed that tag of being one of the best players yet to win one.
Particularly since Tiger Woods has stalled, major titles have been spread around
players on the tour. Capturing the Masters in April made Bubba Watson the eighth
first-time major winner in a row, but No. 2-ranked Donald and fellow Englishman
Lee Westwood, who is No. 3, have been unable to capitalize. Donald is confident
that will change. “I think at the majors, there is more expectation, theres more
pressure. Its learning to deal with that,” he said. “Im learning that I get more
uptight at majors. I want to win it so badly that sometimes that gets in the way
and its learning to relax and deal with that. I know I have the ability to win
one.” Donald, who has two third-place finishes at majors, demonstrated that last
year. He became the first player to officially win money lists on both sides of
the Atlantic and finished in the top 10 in 20 of his 26 tournaments worldwide,
helping him walk away with the European Tours golfer of the year award and the
U.S. PGA Tours player of the year. George OGrady, chief executive of the
European Tour, revealed that Donald earned 95 per cent of the votes to capture
the European players player of the year award and had no hesitation in making
him the 41st player to receive honorary life membership. “Probably the only
person who didnt vote for him was himself,” OGrady said. The competitive streak
in Donald will ensure his push at the majors. “Ask my wife—I dont really like
to lose at anything, whether it be golf or whatever the challenge is,” he said.
“You know, just daily things like chasing my daughter up to the top of the
stairs. I dont like to let my daughter win and shes a 2-year-old.” Rian Lindell Jersey . It wasnt pretty, but it
was effective. Thats the way it has to be at the moment if the Reds are to grind
out positive results in the final weeks of the season. Ryan Fitzpatrick Womens Jersey . For the
first time ever in the sport, a sixth different driver has won each of the six
opening races. Its some contrast to last season, when Sebastian Vettel was
coasting to the title after winning five of the first six, and Red Bull was
crushing Ferrari. That hardly captured the imagination of racing fans, but this
season is turning out to be a golden one for F1. http://www.officialbuffalobillsgear.com/fred-jackson-jerseys
. The San Antonio Spurs were ahead 36 points and he didnt want Gregg Popovich to
end his night just yet. C.J. Spiller Jersey . Beckett pitched his
best game of the season, striking out nine and scattering four hits over seven
innings as the Red Sox shut out the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Tuesday, extending
Bostons winning streak to five. Steve Johnson Womens Jersey . He was right.
Rickie Weeks capped a five-run sixth inning with a three-run homer—one of
four Brewers homers in the game—and Wolf picked up his first win of the
season, as Milwaukee beat the Houston Astros 9-6 on Tuesday night.Mike Benevides
is 2-0 as a CFL head coach, thanks to the B.C. Lions special teams. The
defending Grey Cup champions havent skipped a beat with their rookie head coach.
But Benevides says the Lions wouldnt be undefeated if not for the play of Tim
Brown, the CFLs top punt returner this season. “Theres no way we wouldve won the
last two games without our special teams in terms of our return game,” the
Toronto native said. “For us, it was a huge huge part of the wins.” The play of
Brown and other returners was indeed special last weekend as three punts and a
missed field goal were taken back for touchdowns. That gives the CFL four
special-teams TDs so far, which is already half of last years total. Winnipegs
Demond Washington had the first return TD, taking a punt back 82 yards in a
41-30 loss to Montreal on Friday night. In the nightcap, Brown had an 81-yard
punt return for a touchdown in B.C.s 39-36 home win over Hamilton, a game that
also saw Chris Williams of the Tiger-Cats score on a 67-yard punt return. On
Saturday, Calgarys Larry Taylor returned a missed field goal 125 yards for a
touchdown in a 39-36 road loss to Toronto. “That (four return TDs the same
weekend) is probably a surprise when you look at it but overall you can see
why,” Benevides said. “Its one of those things thats exciting for the fans and
is a huge part of the CFL. “It drives coaches crazy but when its in your favour
its a huge part of why you win.” Hamilton rookie head coach George Cortez
agreed. Well, sort of. “I dont think anybody in the league is happy about the
state of their special teams,” Cortez told reporters Tuesday. “Let me rephrase
that. “Everybody is happy with the return game and nobody is happy with their
coverage game.” Brown certainly gave Benevides plenty to smile about Friday with
six punt returns for 157 yards and seven kickoff returns for 139 yards. He also
had a 59-yard punt return in B.C.s season-opening 33-16 home victory over
Winnipeg. However, that paled in comparison to the club-record 441 all-purpose
yards Taylor rolled up against Toronto, second only in CFL history to the
474-yard performance Winnipegs Albert Johnson III had in 2000. Taylor had eight
kickoff returns for 222 yards, two missed field goal returns for 136 yards and
two punt returns for 70 yards in addition to a 13-yard catch. But after Calgary
rallied to tie the score 36-36, Argos rookie Chandler Williams had a crucial
34-yard kickoff return to the Toronto 47-yard line. RRicky Rays completion to
Andre Durie to the Stampeders 27-yard line set up Noel Prefontaines winning
field goal on the games final play. Mario Williams Jersey. Benevides, a former
special-teams coach, says return teams usually have the early advantage on cover
squads. “At this point and time its Week 2, there still a feel-out process in
terms of the personnel on rosters and where guys play on certain positions,” he
said. “The other thing is cover teams is very much about getting live action.
“You cant simulate the speed of tackling and covering kicks in practice whereas
you can simulate pretty well the return aspect.” Special teams are crucial in
Canadian football because with only three downs on the longer, wider field
returners have plenty of opportunity and ground to make big plays. Not only do
punt teams have a lot of ground to cover, they must also give returners a
five-yard cushion to catch the ball before being allowed to make the tackle. But
thats sometimes easier said that done as Cortez said missed tackles really hurt
the Ticats against B.C. “Its a big field, its a lot of space and good guys in
space make it tough,” Cortez said. “You just have to constantly work to improve
on that.” The good news for cover teams, Benevides said, is during the course of
the year they do catch up to the return squads. However, special-teams coaches
continually tinker with their schemes. For example, B.C. is in Regina on
Saturday to face the unbeaten Roughriders and Benevides expects Saskatchewans
cover teams will have some different wrinkles aimed at containing Brown. As a
result, the Lions special teams will feature their own adjustments. “Its cat and
mouse, its always the chess match,” Benevides said. “Obviously the pieces on the
cover teams will continue to change and make it tough.” Cortez, like Benevides a
former special-teams co-ordinator himself, said a clubs special-teams units are
forever evolving. “Special teams are a lot like offence and defence,” he said.
“You look at what the other guys are doing and you try to tweak what you do to
find the best way for you to attack in your coverage or in your returns. “Every
game the good return team guys, their return will be different every game
because theyre always tweaking and trying to make it better and were no
different from that. We look at the coverage and what theyre doing, who theyre
doubling and who is their best cover guy and try to tweak it all the time.” ’ ’
