Hello,

I just installed all SW, my Bug, etc.  Logged to Network fine.  The problem:  when I press “Launch Virtual Bug” i get an error message “Framework start event received but UAM is not available.” in the Console and no Virtual Bug is being launched.  When I press “Enter” in the Console, the process continues and the Virtual Bug launches properly.  As a consequence of this I can’t start a Virtual Bug from the “Service Definition”-dialogue box when using the functionality “New Bug Project”.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Sorry for my delayed response here.  I hadn’t checked the forums all weekend.

I have seen this UAM not available message before and it’s generally not a real problem.  UAM stands for User App Manager and it helps manage the lifecycle of your BUG apps. At the time the framework first starts up UAM might not be ready, but as the system bundles are loaded, UAM does become available and loads/starts your apps.  So, that error message doesn’t concern me.

The weird thing is that it pauses afterwards and waits for your input.  The Virtual BUG will, by default, try to run all of the apps in your workspace.  It may be a bad app keeping things from starting correctly.  To keep apps from automatically loading, you can either close the app in the eclipse project explorer, or edit your virtual bug launch configuration to explicitly tell it what apps to load.  I suggest launching your Virtual BUG without any apps to see if it launches cleanly.

If that still doesn’t work, please send me the entire contents of the console log after starting the Virtual BUG.  I will take a look and see if I see anything.

Finally, the Virtual BUG launch button from the Service Definition dialog doesn’t work properly in the latest release.  This is a known issue.  The workaround is to launch the Virtual BUG from the launch button in the eclipse toolbar and then run the New BUG Project wizard.

Hey,

I’m trying to set up the Virtual Bug on my computer to try to write an app or two. I don’t have a Bug, but just want to play around with the software to see what I can do.

I’ve downloaded eclipse and Dragonfly, but have some trouble creating a New Bug Project. I create it, and try to start virtual bug, but nothing shows up in the Target BUG section. I’m not sure if this has to do with my installation, or if it’s because I’m not using an actual hardware Bug.

I also get the following error: [ERROR] Framework start event received but UAM is not available.

Any advice on how to properly set up Dragonfly so that I can make a virtual app?

Just as a followup,

I noticed the following line when I start a Virtual Bug:

[DEBUG] Tracker unable to start because service org.osgi.service.http.HttpService is unavailable.

Similar messages occur as the Bug is compiling.

Can you give the full output in the eclipse console?  Do you have some server running on port 8082?

Everything looks ok. The problem about it not starting is due to the app you’re running. It’s blocking the main thread and does not allow the rest of the framework code to execute.

To check if your SDK is ok, close all applications and launch the virtual BUG. Try going to http://localhost:8082 and verify that you see the BUG web services.

Whenever I try to open http://localhost:8082, after about half an hour of waiting, the site still hasn’t loaded (looks like it should be around 50% loaded, but never progresses past that).

I’m trying to load it again, but it looks like I’m stuck around 50% again.

Should it take a long time to connect to http://localhost:8082? Or is something up?

Something’s up.  There should be zero wait.  Can you start from scratch?  In Eclpse/Dragonfly go to File->Switch Workspace->Other and create a brand new workspace.  There should be absolutely nothing in your workspace (Project Explorer on the left should be empty). 

Now go to the Dragonfly perspective and launch the Virtual BUG.  Do you see the VirtualBUG window open up?  Do you see any errors in the console log?  Does http://localhost:8082 have any content (should not take more than a few seconds)?  Finally, is there anything interesting in the Error Log view (Window->Show View->Other..->Error Log?

At this point, I just want to go through this sanity check to see where we’re at.

Ok, a few things:

1. I created a new workspace, and got the following message in the console (pasted at the bottom of the message.

2. I can’t connect to http://localhost:8080/. Just to make sure, I’m trying to connect to this site through Eclipse’s Internal Wb Browser. This is the right way to do it, right?

3. Finally, the error log states: “Unable to connect to USB BUG.

I made a mistake on the port number, should be 8082.  Use a regular browser (or curl or anything that’ll do http GET).  Eclipse’s internal browser is not very good.

Finally, can you use pastebin (http://pastebin.com/) to paste your output and provide a link because something’s getting jacked (everything’s striked out).

Also, did the Virtual BUG window appear?  You didn’t mention.  I see nothing in the console log (hard to read though) that would indicate any problem.

The first error you see in the Error Log is the result of a work-around to deal w/ USB connected BUGs and is nothing for you to worry about.

Just tried http://localhost:8082/ in Google Chrome and it gives me an “Oops! This link appears to be broken,” message.

Interestingly enough, after I created the new workspace, the first time I started the Virtual Bug, a portion of my screen, about the size of what I think the Virtual Bug window should be, turned gray for a second. I thought the Bug would show up, but then it disappeared.

Also, the second time I tried running the Virtual Bug, the error changed to “Unable to connect to Virtual BUG”

Ok. I think i fixed it.

Looking back at some previous posts, I noticed that someone was able to get the Virtual BUG to show up when they clicked in the Console and pressed “Enter.”

I tried this, and everything seems to be working just fine.

Hmm.. I’m at a loss.  From the looks of the console log, things are fine, but the Virtual BUG doesn’t seem to be coming up. That “Unable to connect to Virtual BUG” error comes from the SDK trying to connect to http://localhost:8082.  I’m not well-versed in Windows, but is there possibly another application using that port (like a local webserver) or blocking that port (like a local firewall)?

Some more things to try… maybe your previous attempts have caused Java to hang which is affecting it now.  Possibly a complete reboot of your PC is necessary, again, launching things in that empty workspace after the reboot. 

After launching the virtual bug and seeing the output in the console, you can put your cursor in there and hit enter a couple of times.  You will see a little backwards smiley ‘(:’ if things are working.  You can type some commands in there.  Type “help”.  Also try “bundles” (no quotes on either command).  Any output here says that the virtual bug is running.  If you’re not seeing the virtual bug but you are seeing things in the console, it seems like some sort of java problem.  The Virtual BUG should run on Java 1.5 and above, including OpenJDK flavors.  It uses AWT, which is an old technology.  Perhaps you can write a quick little AWT app in plain Java and run it from Eclipse to see if it works.

I’ve seen some problems in Windows with file permissions, so make sure you have eclipse installed in a place where file permissions are not a problem.  As I said, I’m not very knowledgeable on Windows, so I’m not sure how the permissions work.  Linux is a better platform altogether for BUG dev (considering the BUG is a Linux computer), so if you have access to a Linux box or a virtual machine, that is worth a try.

Finally, I’m not sure how you installed the SDK, but there are two methods.  I suggest using the update site method.  This means installing the correct version of Eclipse from eclipse.org and then following directions which can be found on http://buglabs.net/downloads .  There are many reasons why this is the best way to get the BUG SDK and the ONLY way if you’re using a 64 bit OS.

So, I’ve given you a lot of info.  I can’t really think of anything else at the moment.

Also, there were a few times when the Virtual Bug would freeze, and pressing “Enter” in the console solved that as well.
