After forming a breakaway on Box Hill, Marianne Vos of the Netherlands won a
gold medal, riding with Russian Olga Zabelinskaya and Briton Lizzie Armistead
for the final 40 kilometres of the womens road race at the London 2012 Olympic

in three hours, 35 minutes, 29 seconds.  Vos, who came into the event as the
favourite after winning more races than any other rider last season, put in a
lot of work throughout the race, as part of a very combative Dutch team.  The
gold medal is Vos first in road racing at the Olympic Games or World
Championships. For the last five years, Vos has finished second to Italian
Giorgia Bronzini at World Championship races.  Armistead claimed the road race
silver medal in a final sprint against Vos, earning Great Britains first medal
of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Russian Olga Zabelinskaya finished third for a
bronze medal. Zabelinskayas father, Sergei Sukhoruchenko, won a gold medal for
the USSR at the boycotted Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. Prior to the Race, Vos had
predicted the winning strategy.  “Its more difficult to control the race with
these small teams,” said Vos before the race. “It there is a breakaway, its not
going to be caught easily, although of course you have to add that it was a very
big escape group yesterday.” Both Vos and Armistead have both competed in track
cycling in the past, with Vos having won a gold medal at Beijing 2008 in the
points race.  American sprinter Shelley Olds had joined the breakaway, but when
she did not contribute by helping to lead the breakaway, the others increased
the pace and Olds dropped back.  Under cloudy skies, the race started in a light
rain. In the final 35km, the rain intensified making the roads slippery and
reducing visibility.  Having learned from yesterdays mens race, the womens teams
all took turns attacking early. Once the final escape established itself, they
pushed hard to cover the distance from Box Hill to the finish line at the Mall
in London.  As in the mens race, the peloton took too long to organize and
failed to catch the lead riders, despite teams from Italy, Germany, Canada, and
the US all working together. Joelle Numainville crossed the finish in 12th
place, Canadas top finish.The result was especially good given Numainville had
to stop in the final 15km with a technical problem. Fellow Canadians Denise
Ramsden and Clara Hughes finished 27th and 32nd respectively. Both had been
