MINNEAPOLIS —Chris Sale is a big part of the AL Cy Young Award conversation,
his reliever-to-starter transition season for Chicago already a rousing success.
Brandon Marshall Jersey . Theres only one
achievement he wants to talk about, though, and thats a spot in the playoffs for
the White Sox. Sale threw six scoreless innings to notch his 17th victory after
being rained out the night before, helping the White Sox keep their one-game AL
Central lead by beating the Minnesota Twins 6-0 on Friday. “Any time he pitches
you feel confident that youre going to have a chance to win the game. Spirits
are high,” manager Robin Ventura said. Sale (17-6) scattered three singles and
struck out five without a walk, cruising to his third win in three starts
against the Twins this year, surrendering only up two runs in 20 innings. Sale
lowered his ERA to 2.78, third in the AL, and hes tied for second in wins. The
Cy Young competition this fall is tough, but Sale has earned a spot among the
front-runners. Just dont expect him to acknowledge that. “When you start
thinking about things like that you get a little selfish, and whats really
important slips away,” the 23-year-old Sale said. “I want to play for this team.
Im not trying to win any awards or anything like that. The only award I want is
a big, shiny trophy at the end.” Sale was supposed to pitch on Thursday at home
against Detroit, but the last matchup of the season between the two division
front-runners was postponed until Monday by the wet weather. The Tigers, who
beat Cleveland 4-0, are one game back in the race. “As long as we win, what they
do doesnt really matter,” catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. “Weve just got to go out
and try to win games, and hopefully we can do that for the next couple of days.”
Dayan Viciedo had two RBIs, Kevin Youkilis homered and Alex Rios doubled, scored
and drove in a run for the White Sox, who played without injured slugger
Adam Dunn for the seventh straight game. Dunn, who has a strained right oblique
muscle, could return to the lineup on Saturday. Twins starter Esmerling Vasquez
(0-2) walked three straight batters in the fourth inning after a one-out single,
with Viciedos walk forcing in the second run for Chicago. Then with two outs in
the sixth, after a broken-bat single by Pierzynski and a walk to Viciedo,
Kyle Waldrop relieved Vasquez. Alexei Ramirez greeted him with a single to make
it 3-0. The White Sox are 12-4 against the Twins this year, but theyre just 5-12
against the Tigers with losses in nine of the last 10 meetings. With 19 games
remaining, the White Sox play legitimate contenders only eight more times
including the pivotal makeup game on Monday. They cant afford to slip up against
faded foes like the Twins, who are jostling with the Indians for fourth place.
Sale made sure they didnt, letting only two runners reach second base. Youkilis
helped him out at third base with consecutive catches of hard line drives, going
down on the ground to his right to snag Jamey Carrolls and then gloving
Josh Willinghams on the next play. “It seems like every time we need him to go
out and throw a good game he does,” Pierzynski said. The Twins were, again,
impressed. “The ball sometimes disappears,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Thats
telling you that the guy has great stuff.” NOTES: LHP Francisco Liriano (5-11,
5.37 ERA) will pitch on Saturday against his former team so the White Sox can
give starters Jose Quintana and Gavin Floyd extra rest. Liriano has been
bouncing back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen. RHP Samuel Deduno
(6-3, 3.55 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Twins, coming off a
strong start on Monday when he beat the Indians with seven innings, six
strikeouts and three hits, two runs and three walks allowed. ... Floyd in 2008
was the last to win 17 games for the White Sox. ... Joe Mauer missed his fourth
straight game due to back spasms, but the Twins said hes feeling better. With
Ryan Doumit also day to day with a strained rib cage, Chris Herrmann was called
up from Double-A New Britain to be the emergency catcher. ... Ventura said when
Dunn returns Dewayne Wise will be in the mix with Viciedo and Alejandro De Aza
for time in LF and CF. Israel Idonije Womens Jersey . Fastball.
Baker smacked the first pitch after play resumed back up the middle for a
two-run single, part of his three-hit, three-RBI afternoon. Will Venable
produced four hits, and San Diego knocked Strasburg out after only four innings
Tuesday, matching the second-shortest appearance of his 25-start career, in the
Padres 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. Michael Bush Jersey . TSN Scout Craig Buttons

the day, the Mur de Peguere, as the three-week race entered the Pyrenees on

signed forward Ty Rattie, the club announced Friday. Chris Conte Womens Jersey . Morari, 25, went

Jordany Valdespin promised his mother a hit. The rookie outdid himself.
Valdespin had a pinch-hit three-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth
inning for his first major league hit, leading the New York Mets to a 5-2
victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night. “It was a great moment
for me,” said Valdespin, who was called up to replace injured shortstop
Ruben Tejada. “Hes one of the best closers in the big leagues. They called me
last night and told me to be ready.” David Wright hit a tying two-run double off
Roy Halladay in the sixth to help New York won its third straight game.
Valdespin was 0 for 6 before hitting a drive way out to right off Papelbon
(0-1). The 24-year-old infielder from the Dominican Republic had appeared in
just seven games. “They were celebrating with me, threw ice and beer all over
me,” Valdespin said. “It was exciting.” On the same day Tejada was placed on the
disabled list, the injury-plagued Mets saw catcher Josh Thole leave after
getting elbowed in the head during a collision at the plate. There was no word
on Tholes status. Tim Byrdak (1-0) retired the only batter he faced to get the
win. He struck out pinch-hitter Eric Kratz to end the eighth with a runner on
third. Frank Francisco finished for his eighth save. Halladay bounced back from
his worst start in five years and took a one-hitter into the sixth before
getting in trouble. Halladay allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings,
striking out seven. The only batter he walked wound up scoring. “I felt good the
whole time. I felt I made good pitches,” Halladay said. “You have to overcome it
and move on.” In a 15-13 extra-inning loss at Atlanta last Wednesday, Halladay
gave up 12 hits—one below his career high—and eight runs in 5 1-3 innings.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner had a 6-0 lead going into the fifth before
surrendering six. Halladay left the team the next day for personal reasons.
Halladay had retired 13 straight before running into two-out trouble in the
sixth. Andres Torres walked and Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a single. Wright followed
with a grounder just over the third base bag. The ball kicked off the foul stand
and bounced into shallow left field, allowing both runners to score. Mets
starter Jonathon& Niese allowed two runs and four hits in five innings. Brian Urlacher Womens Jersey. “To come back
against Roy and finish the game with two big hits was great for us,” Mets
manager Terry Collins said. The Phillies loaded the bases with one out in the
seventh and had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth—both
times against Bobby Parnell—and didnt score. Shane Victorino was called for
interference because he slid out of the base line to take out shortstop
Justin Turner on Hunter Pences grounder to second, and the double play negated a
run and ended the inning. Ty Wigginton was thrown out trying to score on
Freddy Galvis tapper to the mound in the eighth. Thole went down after taking a
shot to the head and had to leave the game. Byrdak replaced Parnell and fanned
Kratz. “We had big chances and couldnt do it,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel
said. In the top of seventh, Ike Davis hit a hard liner off Halladays right
thigh for a single. Halladay waved off a trainer and stayed in to finish the
inning, getting help from left fielder John Mayberry Jr.s second diving catch of
the game. Mayberrys sacrifice fly in the first gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
Jimmy Rollins led off with a line-drive double to right-centre. He reached third
when Torres bobbled the ball for an error and scored on Mayberrys liner to
centre. Placido Polanco hit an RBI double in the second. NOTES: Tejada went on
the DL because of a strained right quad. ... Phillies 1B Ryan Howard took
batting practice for the first time since February at the teams spring-training
facility in Clearwater, Fla. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. called it “progress.” Howard,
the 2006 NL MVP, has been sidelined since having a procedure to remove an
infection near his surgically repaired left Achilles tendon. ... Amaro said
Chase Utley will stay in Philadelphia and field grounders and run. Hell join
Howard in Clearwater “when he feels comfortable,” according to Amaro. Utley, the
five-time All-Star second baseman, had been working out with a specialist in
Arizona to strengthen his chronically bad knees. ... RHP Joe Blanton (3-3, 2.83)
takes the mound against the Mets on Tuesday night after tossing his first
shutout in five years in his last start. Miguel Batista (0-1, 6.92) starts for
New York. ’ ’ ’
