delivered a quality start for the Kansas City Royals on Friday night against the
potent Texas Rangers offence. Guthrie limited the Rangers to six hits and three
runs in six-plus innings, but it was not enough for him to pick up his first
victory in more than two months. Matt Harrison gave the beleaguered Texas
pitching staff a strong start, Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer and the
Rangers defeated the Royals 5-3. Guthrie (3-11) is winless in three Kansas City
starts since being acquired in a July 20 trade with the Colorado Rockies for
Jonathan Sanchez and has not won since May 31 against Houston. “Thats the best
start weve seen from him,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “It was great to see
him get on track. He was getting his fastball up to 95 and executing pitches.
“He kept the ball down and he really matched Harrison pitch for pitch. Thats a
difficult task against their lineup and Jeremy almost did that. He kept us in
the ballgame; he kept us one swing away.” The Rangers loaded the bases with one
out in the first on a single by Ian Kinsler and walks to Elvis Andrus and
Adrian Beltre, but scored only one run. Nelson Cruzs fly ball to Jeff Francoeur
at the wall in right field brought home Kinsler. “We caught a break there on
Cruz,” Yost said. “In Texas that ball is out of here. Its in the seats. He gave
up the second run on a curveball up just a little bit. It wasnt a horrible
pitch, just a little up. He went after them.” Guthrie threw only 11 strikes in
25 pitches that inning. “The first inning I was up in the zone a little,”
Guthrie said. “After that I was getting that feeling, making better pitches. I
was trying to make close pitches and make the best pitches. In the first, I
didnt really have the feel to make the best pitches. I just need to locate
better.” The Royals tied it in the second when they loaded the bases with no
outs. Salvador Perez started it with a single, Francoeur walked and Eric Hosmer
beat out an infield single. Yuniesky Betancourt, however, grounded into a double
play with Perez scoring. The Rangers took the lead in the fourth, which Beltre
opened with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on
David Murphys single. Murphy is hitting .396 with 32 RBIs in 53 at-bats with
runners in scoring position. “I was surprised (Murphy) took a swing at it, it
was such a bad pitch, but I made my own mess by leaving the ball up in the
zone,” Guthrie said. The Royals chased Harrison in the seventh. Chris Getz and
Alex Gordon had two-out infield singles. After Alcides Escobars run-scoring
single, Tanner Scheppers replaced Harrison, who held the Royals to two runs and
eight hits. Betancourts two-out double in the eighth scored Francoeur with the
final Royals run. Alexi Ogando worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save in five
opportunities. Notes: Rangers manager Ron Washington said he would not use RHP
Joe Nathan on Friday and probably not Saturday after his closer threw 62 pitches
in pitching an inning each Wednesday and Thursday. He gave up four runs and four
hits, including three home runs, in the appearances against the Angels. It was
the first time this season Nathan had allowed earned runs in consecutive games.

his right knee. Moustakas aggravated it Thursday sliding into second base
against Cleveland. He first hurt his knee on a fielding play in the first inning

win snapped a five-game skid for the Pirates, who at 75-77 are in danger of
posting their 20th straight losing season, which would extend their major North
American professional sports record. The Pirates were 16 games above .500 early
last month, but have collapsed since then, including winning just three times in
the past 16 games to make their chances of securing the second NL wild-card
slim. “I thought A.J. set another very good example for everybody today about
finishing,” he said. “Regardless of the environment … or whats going on around
you, his mindset today was to go out and put a foot down—and he did that.”
Burnett (16-8), who allowed four hits and struck out a season-high 11, won for
the first time since Aug. 16 to become the first Pittsburgh pitcher to win more
than 15 games since 1991. He had started six games with four losses between
victories. He wasnt too concerned about reaching the milestone win. “I just want
to put my team in a position to win and get us in a good position at the end of
the year,” he said. Harrison provided the spark Hurdle was looking for in the
lineup, and Jose Tabata drove in two runs as the Pirates had a season-high 18
hits. Their eight runs were six more than they scored in the first two games of
the series combined. “Were all in it together, whether youre up or whether youre
down or whether youre sideways, were all tied together,” Hurdle said. “We need
to remember that.” Scott Moore had a solo homer in the sixth, and had three of
Houstons four hits to come a triple short of the cycle. “Scotty Moore was our

Harrison wasnt sure what he thought about Hurdle calling him a spark, but prides
himself on being ready whenever he gets a chance to start. “Im going in there
and not trying to do too much,” Harrison said. “I just want to compete in the
box and play good defence.” Moore doubled in the first inning and Houston didnt
get another hit until his single with two outs in the third inning. Jose Altuve
walked and stole second base in the third, and was out at home on Moores single.
Pittsburgh added three runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Alvarez, Tabata and
Burnett. Burnetts performance continued a streak of 26 straight starts where he
pitched into the sixth inning or longer. NOTES: Zane Smith (16-10) and John
Smiley (20-8) were the previous Pittsburgh pitchers to win more than 15 games in
a season. ... Right-hander Bud Norris is scheduled to start for the Astros on
Wednesday. But he could have his start pushed back, because he has flu-like
symptoms and is still dealing with a blister on the index finger of his throwing
