There were moments not too long ago when both Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay
thought their careers might be over. NFL Super

was headed home to Australia to join the family business because he couldnt
afford to continue chasing his racing dreams. Hunter-Reay couldnt find steady
work for almost two full seasons and figured there was nothing left for a young
American driver. They stuck with it, and find themselves locked in a tight race
for the IndyCar Series championship. Hunter-Reay goes into Sundays race at
Edmonton with a 34-point lead over Power in the standings. Its the first time at
this level that he has led the series standings, and Hunter-Reay got there with
three consecutive wins. At 31, Hunter-Reay is proof that the journeyman driver
can still be successful. “I really feel like Im living the American dream right
now, especially because its been such a tough go for me at times throughout my
career,” Hunter-Reay said. “I didnt have the means, I didnt have the last name
and Ive gotten here today based on merits and work and with results and
persistence.” Stuck in the middle of Americas open-wheel racing split,
Hunter-Reay spent his first three seasons in Champ Car with three different
teams. But there was nothing for him in 2006, and he came close many times to
walking away from racing. “I got within a couple of months of not knowing what
to do anymore,” he said. “There was nothing left, there was nothing out there.
The well was drying up and I was literally sitting there every day looking at a
list of phone numbers, dialing numbers every day, and getting nowhere. “At some
point you have to look yourself in the mirror and say, You are going to have to
do something else if you are going to make a living.” The breakthrough came
midway through the 2007 season when Bobby Rahal called and offered him a ride
for the final six races of the IndyCar season. It was the entry he needed, and
Hunter-Reay carved a spot for himself in the series that made him a viable
option for Andretti Autosport in 2010. Now in his third season with the same
team—the longest stretch of job security Hunter-Reay has had in years—he
has put together an impressive streak. He is the first American since Sam
Hornish Jr. in 2006 to lead the points standings, and hes just the 23rd driver
in U.S. open-wheel history to win three consecutive races. Power is part of that
group, too. The perennial title contender started the year with consecutive wins
at Barber, Long Beach and Brazil, and led in points through seven races. Crashes
at Indianapolis and Iowa have contributed to his slip, but Power has admittedly
not been on the same pace of late as Hunter-Reay. Now, something has to give: Of
the 21 other drivers to win three races in a row in a season, only Paul Tracy in
1997, and A.J. Allmendinger and Scott Dixon in 2007, failed to win the
championship in that year. “I feel Im a contender, I really do,” Power said. “I
feel like if we get everything right in the next five races we have a legitimate
chance of winning the championship. Were one of the quickest out there, and when
things go right on a weekend, were always on the podium or we win the race.”
History would suggest Power is the favourite this weekend at Edmonton, where he
won last year on the redesigned 2.2-mile, 13-turn temporary street course. He
started on the pole in 2010 and finished second, and he won in 2009. Hes the
most dominant road course racer in the series right now, but isnt taking
anything for granted, especially since Hunter-Reays wins have come on two
different ovals and a street circuit at Toronto. “Theres no one dominant. Theres
no one getting all the poles. Theres no one really winning all the road course
races. Its really mixed up,” said Power, adding that Hunter-Reay has “always
been strong. This year hes just been more consistent. Hes executing week in,
week out. In my opinion hes the strongest guy in IndyCar racing right now
because hes strong in both disciplines, oval and road.” But its not a two-driver
race. Powers Penske Racing teammate Helio Castroneves is third in the standings,
and Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon is fourth. “Its been our No. 1
goal to beat Penske and Ganassi because they have been the dominant forces,”
Hunter-Reay said. “But we know now we can beat them on any weekend, it can be
done. Its going to be hard because four of the remaining five races are road
courses and street races, and Will is going to be a threat to win at every one
of them. Dixon will be tough to beat anywhere, anytime, and I think Helio is
going to be tough, too. He can put together a run here at the end of the
season.” Power said Hunter-Reays streak has given him the kick in the pants he
needed. “Im really back to being focused and ready and positive, and its kind of
good to feel this way at this time of the season,” Power said. “Feeling good,

OAKLAND, Calif. —Nursing a three-point lead and backed up to the shadow of his
own goal posts, rookie Brandon Weeden engineered a touchdown drive that gave the
Cleveland Browns a happy plane ride home for a change and hope for a much
brighter future. Weeden threw for a career-high 364 yards and a touchdown and
made key plays on the clinching 94-yard drive that helped the Browns snap a
12-game road losing streak by beating the Oakland Raiders 20-17 on Sunday. “That
was kind of a statement,” Weeden said. “We strung together a lot of really good
plays. That shows the potential we have as an offence, and thats encouraging. We
had a lot of guys make different plays.” Weeden hit fellow rookie Josh Gordon on
a 44-yard score in the second quarter and Trent Richardson scored on a 3-yard
run after Sheldon Brown made a key interception deep in Cleveland territory when
the Raiders (3-9) were driving for the potential tying or go-ahead score in the
fourth quarter. It all added up to the first road win for the Browns (4-8) since
beating Indianapolis 27-19 in the second game of the 2011 season. The skid
started a few weeks later with a loss in Oakland and went deep into this season.
“You dont want streaks like that,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “Lets face it, over
the last few years we havent done a great job of winning games. And so, as we
take this journey with this young football team, theyre starting to learn.” The
Raiders have lost five straight for the first time since a six-game losing
streak in Lane Kiffins first year as coach in 2006 and have been eliminated from
playoff contention for a 10th straight year. There was more bad news after the
game as Oakland coach Dennis Allen had to fly to the Dallas area to be with his

Raiders host Denver. The biggest blunder for the Raiders came when rookie
Juron Criner used a double move to get behind Brown and Carson Palmer underthrew
the deep ball with Oakland already in position for a game-tying field goal.
Brown intercepted the pass at the 6-yard line and Weeden engineered an
impressive drive beginning with 9:31 to play. “I was trying to take a shot
there, go for the touchdown quickly and just didnt put the ball in the right
spot, didnt give Juron a chance to make a play on the ball,” Palmer said. Weeden
completed an 11-yard pass on third-and-3 to Gordon to get the Browns started and
also had a big 22-yard pass to tight end Benjamin Watson. Weeden thhen converted
a fourth-and-1 sneak from the Oakland 45 and Desmond Bryant jumped offside on a

showed signs of life late in the third quarter when Desmond Bryant blocked a

But thats as close as the Raiders got. After getting outscored by 90 points
during what general manager Reggie McKenzie recently described as a “terrible
November,” the Raiders didnt get off to a much better start in December. They
punted on their first four possessions of the game and fell behind 10-0 as
Dawson kicked a 41-yard field goal early in the second quarter and Gordon beat
Ron Bartell deep on a 44-yard touchdown pass later in the second.
Sebastian Janikowski got Oakland on the board with a 51-yard field goal, but was
wide right on a 61-yarder at the end of the half. Notes: Dawson had made a
