Ilya Kovalchuk and Alex Pietrangelo returned to their respective teams for Game Three, with different results. Brian Cushing White Jersey . Scott Cullen looks at the Devils OT win and the Kings taking a commanding lead over the Blues. KOVALCHUK IGNITES DEVILSAlexei Ponikarovsky picked a good time to score his first goal of the playoffs, netting the winner in overtime as the New Jersey Devils edged the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3, taking a 2-1 series lead. Ponikarovsky was sprung loose on the counter attack which led to his goal by a pass from Ilya Kovalchuk (in combination with a horrible Flyers line change). Kovalchuk, who missed Game Two with a herniated disk in his back, was much more effective after a game off, putting up a goal and two assists to lead the Devils attack. He now has nine points in nine playoff games. Patrik Elias and Marek Zidlicky each contributed two points for the Devils. Playoff assassin Danny Briere had two more points for the Flyers, including the tying goal midway through the third period, and now has 12 points in nine playoff games. Rookie C Sean Couturier suffered a cut on his leg and left the game in the first period. If the gash is serious, that would be a big loss to the Flyers lineup, since Couturier has been handling tough checking assignments throughout the postseason. With Couturier out, its no surprise that two of the three Flyers forwards that played more than 26 minutes were centres Briere and Claude Giroux; the other was RW Wayne Simmonds. The leader in ice time for the entire game was Devils D Bryce Salvador, who logged 31:43, and he matched up most often against Claude Giroux (www.timeonice.com), the Flyers ace centre who was held off the scoresheet for the second straight game. Though the win gives the Devils the lead in the series, they might want to exercise more discipline going forward, as the Flyers have 16 power plays compared to Devils nine power plays through three games. Yes, New Jersey has killed 14 of the 16 man advantages, but thats a risky game to play. BLUES ON THE BRINKThe St. Louis Blues are on the brink of elimination after the Los Angeles Kings took a 3-0 stranglehold on the series with a 4-2 win in L.A. Thursday. Kings D Drew Doughty, who had two points in the first seven games of this years playoffs, had a goal and two assists to lead the Kings attack. Anze Kopitar and Mike Richards each added a pair of points for the Kings. D Matt Greene, who had 15 points in 82 regular season games, recorded a point for the third straight game. For a team in a desperate situation, the Blues didnt come out with the kind of urgency that might have been expected, managing only four shots in first period and a total of 20 in the game. RW Chris Stewart, who has been a healthy scratch for the Blues, scored both St. Louis goals. D Alex Pietrangelo returned to the St. Louis lineup, after missing Game Two with a lower body injury, and led all Blues with 26:34 of ice time. Though neither team was creating a ton of chances, the Blues were undone by a mediocre performance in goal by Brian Elliott, who allowed four goals on 22 shots, not one of which would have been considered beyond his grasp. As great as Elliott has been this year, hes now allowed nine goals in the last two games, his highest two-game total all year. Prior to Game Two, Elliott had allowed four goals in three of 43 appearances this season, and now hes done it in back-to-back games. With Jaroslav Halak on the shelf, the Blues simply couldnt afford to have a subpar game from Elliott, but thats what happened, leaving the Blues with a mountain to climb if they are going to make a highly unlikely comeback. SYRACUSE, N.Y. —Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim paid Orange point guard Michael Carter-Williams the ultimate compliment after the dynamic sophomore added another splendid game to his budding college career. “Hes playing the position as well as you can play it,” Boeheim said. “Good decisions. He made one bad play today.” Carter-Williams had eight points and a career-high 13 assists with only one turnover, James Southerland scored 18 points, and No. 6 Syracuse beat Colgate 87-51 on Sunday. Carter-Williams, who also had six rebounds, missed the only shot he attempted in the first half. But he assisted on nine of the Oranges first 10 baskets, giving him a real shot at challenging the school record for assists in a game. “I didnt know how many I had,” said Carter-Williams, who boosted his season totals to 37 assists with 11 turnovers. “I was just out there playing. My teammates were knocking down shots. They made it look easy for me. I just tried to make it look easy for them.” Syracuse (4-0) outscored Colgate 42-14 in the paint, 21-0 off turnovers, and 18-4 on the fast break to make the 165th meeting between the upstate New York foes another agonizing day for the Raiders (3-4). The Orange have won 47 straight against Colgate. “I was real happy with just one turnover,” said Carter-Williams, who stole the ball after missing a shot and dunked for the Oranges first basket of the second half. “Ive had a few that I havent been proud of. We just try to take away what other teams are good at. Colgate is a good shooting team, so we just tried to get on them and take away their shots.” Sherman Douglas holds the Syracuse record of 22 assists in a game, set against Providence in January 1989. Pearl Washington had 18 against St. Johns in February 1984, and Douglas is among five players to notch 14 in a game. The 6-foot-6 Carter-Williams, who had 11 assists and three turnovers a week ago against Wagner, easily could have had more, and Southerland said he apologized afterward. “I couldve gotten him four or five more assists,” said Southerland, who was 4 of 9 on 3-pointers and 7 of 12 overalll from the floor. J.J. Murphy Burnatowski, Pat Moore and John Brandenburg each had eight points to lead Colgate. Moore entered the game on a roll, making 14 of 17 3-pointers in his previous two outings. But he was 2 of 8 from behind the arc and 3 of 12 overall before fouling out with 6:02 left. Colgate came in averaging nearly 10 3-pointers on 46.5 per cent shooting. The Raiders made 9 of 28 (32.1 per cent) against the Orange. Burnatowski and Mitch Rolls each hit a 3-pointer in the first 63 seconds of the game to get Colgate started and prompting Boeheim to make his first subsitutions. In went Southerland and he drained a 3 after Carter-Williams missed. After Burnatowski banked in a 3 to tie the game 11-11, the Syracuse defence clamped down. Colgate was 1 of 11 on 3-pointers the rest of the half to fall hopelessly behind. “It (shooting 3-pointers) is part of our identity as a group right now,” Colgate coach Matt Langel said. “Weve got some guys who can shoot the ball, and when those opportunities are there we need to take them. But you cant rely on that to be your only form of offence and your only ability to stay in the game.” Carter-Williams set up Triche for a layup, then fed Southerland a lob for a dunk that had the Carrier Dome crowd buzzing. Triches 3 from the wing boosted the Syracuse lead to 20-11, and back-to-back 3-pointers from Southerland made it 30-20 with 6:09 left. Syracuse led 38-24 at the break, and the Raiders never got closer than that the rest of the game. The Orange made 17 straight free throws in the second half before Nolan Hart missed in the final 2 minutes. Syracuse finished 25 of 32 from the line. “I think in the second half Syracuse just made some significant adjustments,” Langel said. “They really made a concerted effort to get the ball inside. They got to the foul line a lot. That makes a difference.” ’ ’ ’
