HOYLAKE, England—Jiyai Shin avoided mistakes in miserable weather conditions
Sunday to cruise to a record nine-stroke victory in the Womens British Open. Darrell Green Jersey . In the 36-hole finish
Sunday in the wind-delayed tournament, Shin took a three-shot lead into the
final round after shooting a 1-under 71 in the morning. She stayed calm while
strong wind and heavy showers sent scores soaring at Royal Liverpool in the
afternoon, closing with a 73 to finish at 9-under 279. “It was a long, very,
very tough day out there,” Shin said. “But I kept my focus and concentrated on
every shot, and when I made the winning putt, it was great. The 24-year-old
South Korean player won the major championship for the second time in five years
and also won for the second time in seven days on the LPGA Tour. Last Monday
morning in Virginia, she finished off Paula Creamer on the ninth hole of a
playoff in the Kingsmill Championship. “When I won at Sunningdale, it was a
totally different kind of course, but I finally think Ive got the right tempo
with my swing for links golf,” Shin said. The 10-time LPGA Tour winner entered
the day with a five-stroke lead after shooting a 64—the lowest competitive
round ever at Hoylake—on Saturday. She broke the record for margin of victory
of five set by Karen Stupples in 2004 at Sunningdale. “My goal was 1-under par
every single day. So my goal was 4 under. I think it was enough score,” Shin
said. “So, Im really surprised even from yesterday and then also today, I hit
even par with 36 holes with this weather, so Im really surprised and inspired by
myself. Because really tough course here, so when I finished it today, Im just
like, Wow, I can play good score any, any other course, Im pretty sure of that.”
Shin completed an Asian sweep of the four majors. South Koreas Sun Young Yoo won
the Kraft Nabisco, Chinas Shanshan Feng took the LPGA Championship, and South
Koreas Na Yeon Choi won the U.S. Womens Open. Asian players have won nine of the
last 12 majors. Shin missed the LPGA Championship and U.S. Womens Open after
having surgery on her left wrist. “I think so many Asia players are playing at
the moment on the LPGA Tour, so it makes a lot of chance to win,” Shin said.
“Especially, I dont know I dont know how can I say, I didnt play last two major
tournaments, but I played in Nabisco and here. Well, I work so hard, I guess
thats why I get this trophy, but, I dont know, I know all the other players
doing their best and they work hard, too. So it makes it just happen.” Shin is
2-for-2 working with new caddie Florian Rodriguez. “Im happy with my new work
with my new caddie because he make me feel relaxed,” Shin said. “Actually, hes
one year younger than me, but he like tried to be relaxed on the golf course and
I really appreciate my caddie.” South Koreas Inbee Park was second, shooting
72-76. Creamer shot 72-72 to finish third at 1 over. “I feel very close,” said
Creamer, winless since 2010. “I hit the ball great. I cannot take away from my
ball striking. That was definitely not the issue. It was my putting for sure.
And a little bit speed related in some aspects, Im going to take a couple weeks
off and try and refresh. But I have to continue moving forward with everything
that Im doing because like I said, I feel really good about where Im at. Its
just a couple things here and there.” Japans Mika Miyazato was fourth at 2 over
after rounds of 72 and 77. Australias Karrie Webb, a three-time winner in the
event, pulled within three shots with a 68 in the morning, but finished with an
82 to tie for fifth with South Koreas Se Yeon Ryu—12 shots back. Ryu shot
71-76. Play was abandoned Friday because of high wind, forcing the 36-hole
finale Sunday. Play was suspended for a few minutes during the fourth round as
the rain and wind pelted the course, but organizers decided to play on. “It was
like we were standing under a shower,” Creamer said. “Thats the best way I can
describe it. It was hard, my goodness gracious. Ive always said Solheim in
Sweden was one of the toughest conditions Ive ever played in. I think this tops
that, for sure.” Shin opened her final round with a triple bogey, but she came
back with birdies at the sixth and seventh before dropping another stroke at the
eighth. She picked up three more birdies on the way along with two bogeys,
staying in control of her game while Webb faded. Park struggled in the final
round and reached the turn at 4 over, then dropped two more strokes on the back
nine before making birdies on the 16th and 18th to take finish second. Creamer
and American teenager Lexi Thompson were the only two players to shoot par in
the afternoon, although Thompson was already out of contention and finished in a
tie for 17th. She shot 76-72. Lydia Ko, the 15-year-old amateur coming off a
victory three weeks ago in the Canadian Womens Open, also tied for 17th at 9
over—shooting 76-78. “I got leading amateur and thats what I wanted after
yesterday,” Ko said. “I guess I have to be happy about that, and this is my
first experience at the British Open and I did much better than the U.S. Open.
So, I cant say it was a bad day. I had lots of fun playing.” The South
Korean-born New Zealander, the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history, won the New
South Wales Open in Australia in January and took the U.S. Womens Amateur last
month. Yani Tseng, the 2010 and 2011 winner, shot 76-79 to tie for 26th at 11
over. Charles Mann Jersey . The roster includes
four goaltenders, 12 defencemen and 24 forwards. The camp will take place August
3-6 at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto. The players, born in 1995 and 1996,
were selected by Hockey Canada head scout Kevin Prendergast, in consultation
with head coach Todd Gill and assistant coaches Yanick Jean and Scott Walker. Trent Williams Jersey . Victorias Hesjedal
led the final climb to tear apart the leading group of breakaway riders on the
182-kilometre stage, but neither he nor Cummings could threaten Omega
Pharma-QuickSteps Martin for the overall victory. http://www.redskinsfansstore.com/robert-griffin-iii-jersey
. Votto had 4,475,180 votes in the fourth update from Major League Baseball
released Tuesday, supplanting injured Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. Aldrick Robinson Jersey . Paul Saints
leftfielder Willie Cabrera obviously had enough of the Winnipeg Goldeyes
six-game winning streak and the Saints three-game losing streak. Pierre Garcon Jersey . In the end he made it
all work out. Yonder Alonsos two-run single in the seventh inning snapped a tie
and helped the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4 on
Sunday. While the Raptors are only nine days away from their opening night tilt
against the Indiana Pacers, their second-to-last preseason outing demonstrated
that there is still plenty left to iron out before the regular season kicks off.
Despite Dwane Casey playing a sort of regular season-esque rotation, with nearly
30 minutes a piece for his five starters, the guys out on the court oftentimes
looked totally out of sync with each other, especially during an uninspiring
first half. There were turnovers galore in this game, 18 in all for the Raptors,
and despite a second-half rally that secured a nine-point victory over the
Bucks, the team was full of miscues all night long. The fact of the matter is
that this Raptors team is going to face bouts where they simply have trouble
executing their offensive stuff. Despite having two standout playmakers in
Kyle Lowry and Jose Calderon (who each had six assists on the night), the team
as a whole lacks the kind of offensive firepower that can simply assert its will
night after night. Casey made a point of getting the ball into the hands of
DeMar DeRozan and Andrea Bargnani all game long, with the two of them getting up
a combined 31 shots (or 40% of the teams total attempts), but the effort to do
so stagnated much of the games flow and kept Lowry from asserting himself
offensively until the dying minutes of the game. While Casey has said repeatedly
that the clubs offense revolves around DeRozan and Bargnani, Lowry simply needs
to be allowed to play much more aggressively to prevent the slow starts that
have plagued this club all through preseason. Lowry is really the only Raptor
that can consistently break his opponents down off of the dribble and that
weapon has yet to be utilized to its fullest early in games. Far more often
during Lowrys three starts has he be asked to play the setup man for three
quarters before having a shot to close out the game as the teams primary scoring
option. While its important to make sure that DeRozan and Bargnani are
established early, right now the offensive setup is too mechanical and
predictable, and Milwaukee was easily able to read what Toronto wanted to do
early and had they been a better defensive team they would have been able to
snuff out much of the offensive battle plan in the opening minutes of the
contest. Of course, one must concede that it will take more than three preseason
games for Lowry to fully enmesh himself with Torontos starters, and it will
likewise take more time before Casey gets comfortable utilizing the full array
of Lowrys skills. It wasnt like Lowry wasnt able to impact the game; he still
managed to hand out those aforementioned assists while also grabbing 5 boards
and holding Brandon Jennings to a 3-for-15 shooting night. He also still dropped
15 points, although ten of those points came in the fourth quarter and four came
when the Bucks started intentionally fouling at the end of the game. Still, for
someone as offensively talented as Lowry, he neeeds to be allowed to impact the
scoring column much earlier in the game to keep the Raptors from stagnating like
the have been in the first quarter. Robert Griffin III Jersey. In terms of the
guys that Lowry was meant to get on track, both DeRozan and Bargnani had solid
offensive outings. Bargnani finally had a decent shooting night, going for 17
points on 7-for-15 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and DeRozan
managed a strong 21 points, seven of which came at the free throw line. DeRozan
was particularly aggressive at posting up the smaller Monta Ellis, but he was
also routinely abused by Ellis at the other end as Ellis lit DeRozan up for 26
points. DeRozan remains the weakest link in Torontos starting five at the
defensive end and he simply has to do a better job of staying with his man or
his offensive contributions are going to be completely negated by what he gives
up to opposing wings. Someone who has nothing to be ashamed of on defense,
though, is rookie Jonas Valanciunas, who recorded four blocks and only two
fouls, recovering nicely from his five foul outing against New York last Friday.
Not to be overlooked were Valanciunas contributions at the offensive end, as he
got himself to the line ten times (tying DeRozan for a team high) and made eight
of his free throws. While four of Torontos starters had pretty solid games, the
fifth is still searching for some consistency this preseason. While
Landry Fields snatched seven rebounds against Milwaukee and played tight defense
against Tobias Harris, he made some costly miscues fouling guys late in the shot
clock and was the only Raptor starter not to score in double-digits on the
night. Fields is a rhythm player and one presumes that as the team begins to
find its rhythm his contributions will be more apparent, but right now he looks
out of sync and Casey actually kept him on the bench at the end of the game (a
first this preseason) in favor of Alan Anderson, who wasnt exactly making league
history himself with his play Monday night. No doubt that Fields will be on the
court at the end of tight games most nights this season, but it would be a lot
easier to put that in ink if he looked more comfortable out there with his new
teammates. Were far, far away from sounding any alarm bells, but itll something
to watch early in the season. The Raptors have a history of opening the season
intending to start one guy at small forward and quickly replacing him
(Joey Graham, Morris Peterson, Jason Kapono, Jamario Moon, Linas Kleiza,
Rasual Butler), and given their investment in Fields the club has to be hoping
that he isnt the next in line for a demotion. The Raptors will travel to Memphis
on Friday to close out their preseason schedule before getting ready to start
the season against Indiana on Halloween. The regular season is right around the
corner, so the Raps had better start tightening things up before the games start
to count for something beginning next week. ’ ’ ’
