Dwight Kings fifth goal of the playoffs proved to be the difference as the Los
Angeles Kings downed the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 in Game Three to move within on
game of a sweep and a berth in the Stanley Cup Final. Patrick Peterson Jersey . King was a valuable
secondary contributor during the regular season, putting up five goals and 14
points in 27 games after he was called up from the AHL, but he now has five
goals in a dozen playoff games and getting that kind of production from a rookie
in modest playing time (under 12 minutes per game in the playoffs) is yet
another reason why the Kings are unstoppable right now. The Coyotes started
strong, registering 11 shots on goal in the first period and scoring the games
first goal, when Daymond Langkow found the net 1:03 into the second period, but
they lost their momentum shortly thereafter. The Kings have barely played from
behind at all in this years playoffs and only let the Coyotes hold the lead for
2:07 before Anze Kopitar netted the tying goal on a breakaway. In any case, the
Kings outshot the Coyotes 20-8 over the last two periods, territorial dominance
that pretty effectively sealed the Coyotes fate. Lauri Korpikoski and
Taylor Pyatt led the Coyotes with three shots on goal, but it was more telling
that Shane Doan and Radim Vrbata had none. That happened to Vrbata only three
times all season, and none after December 14. (He had no shots in the first game
of the playoffs too, but played only 30 seconds due to injury.) It seems a
reasonable indication that Vrbata missed big centre Martin Hanzal, who was
suspended for Game Three after a hit from behind on Kings captain Dustin Brown
in Game Two. While Doan didnt manage a shot on goal, he did dish out a game-high
11 hits. In the battle of hitting captains, Dustin Brown delivered nine, while
defenceman Drew Doughty had eight. The Kings once again had a healthy 28-19 shot
advantage, even though Jeff Carter, Dustin Penner and Justin Williams all went
without one. There hasnt been much indication that the Coyotes are going to
present any threat to the Kings in this series. Over the last seven games, the
Kings have killed 27 shorthanded situations and they have outshot Phoenix 116-70
through the first three games, so its hard to imagine what circumstances will be
necessary for the Coyotes to mount a significant rally in this series. Scott

strike, and that was good enough. Nicklas Lidstroms goal with 7:28 left
completed a comeback and lifted the NHL-leading Red Wings to their fifth
straight win, 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday night. It was the
sixth goal for Lidstrom, who also had two assists. Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas
Holmstrom also scored, Pavel Datsyuk had three assists, and Chris Osgood made 32
saves. The biggest stop came on Shane Doans breakaway with 30 seconds left.
Martin Hanzal and Ed Jovanovski scored for Phoenix and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 36
shots. Lidstrom beat a screened Bryzgalov with a slap shot. I was aiming on the
blocker side. There were two or three bodies in front of the net and I knew
(Holmstrom) was one of them, Lidstrom said. I just tried to pick the blocker
side corner. If Holmers not there, hes probably going to see the puck and make
the save. But Osgood still had to foil Doan, who got behind the Red Wings
defence and was in alone from the blue-line. I just tried to stay up as long as
I could, Osgood said. I tried to get everything low so he couldnt slide
underneath me. The Coyotes led 2-1 after two periods. We were a little bit rusty
at the start. They had some jump on us, Lidstrom said. I think it helped their
cause by playing (Tuesday). They got their legs going. It took us a while to get
ours. Then we took the game over and created a lot of chances. It was Detroits

Jovanovski gave the Coyotes the lead 8:31 into the second period when he beat
Osgood with a one-timed slap shot from the left point for his seventh goal.
Zetterberg scored just 3:54 into the game after missing Detroits previous two
games and NHL All-Star festivities last weekend because of back spasms. He
missed the final 19 games of the regular season last season and five games in
late December because of back problems. Zetterbergs 29th goal came when his
attempted pass from the left corner went in off of Bryzgalov. Hanzal tied it for
Phoenix at 9:57 when he beat Osgood from the slot for his sixth goal. It was the
result of a giveaway by Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall beside his own net.
Notes: Detroit D Brett Lebda missed the game because of a left wrist injury. .
Gretzkys father, Walter, attended the game. . Kronwall left the game with a left
shoulder injury in the middle of the third period after being checked along the
boards by Coyotes RW Craig Weller. Babcock said the team wouldnt know anything
