BOSTON —Cody Ross looked pretty comfortable and very productive hitting in David Ortizs usual spot in the lineup. Brandon Weeden Womens Jersey . Ross hit three-run homers in consecutive innings and Felix Doubront pitched six solid innings, carrying the Boston Red Sox to a 10-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. “When you have the guys on base and you have the heart of the order coming up, that puts a lot of pressure on the pitcher,” Ross said. “Any time you lose a David Ortiz its tough to make up for. No one can replace David Ortiz, hes one of the best hitters in the game.” On the day Boston put Ortiz on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right Achilles, the first four batters in the order were a combined 10-for-15 with nine runs and 10 RBIs through six innings. Ross did his damage in Ortizs customary No. 3 place in the order. “Weve been scoring runs with guys on the disabled list and different lineups,” Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. The Red Sox moved past Texas with the high-scoring night and lead the majors in runs scored. Doubront has benefited from Bostons offensive outbursts this season. The Red Sox have averaged 8.38 runs per nine innings in his starts. “Its amazing,” he said. “Theyre doing a good job to help me.” Adrian Gonzalez added a solo homer and drove in four runs, and Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits for Boston. Paul Konerko had an RBI single and walked twice for the White Sox, who lost for the fourth time in 12 games. The Red Sox have won two of three in the four-game series, which concludes Thursday night. Chicagos Kevin Youkilis went 1-for-4 in his third game against his former team of 7 1-2 seasons. He was traded to the White Sox on June 24. The 24-year old Doubront (10-4) joined Jon Lester as the only Red Sox to have double-digits wins in a season at 24 or younger since Roger Clemens in 1987. Clemens was 20-9 at 24 and Lester was 24 when he won 16 in 2008. Left-hander Pedro Hernandez took the loss in his major league debut, giving up eight runs and 12 hits—three homers—in four-plus innings, walking one and striking out two. “Just one of those days. Hes got good stuff, though,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “I think thats one of the things, you see pieces of it in there, pitches he was making in other counts. Hell grow from it, learn.” After the game Hernandez was sent back to Triple-A Charlotte. The club called up left-hander Donnie Veal from Charlotte to take his place. Ross broke a 1-all tie with his homer in the third. Ellsbury and Carl Crawford opened the inning with singles before Ross hit a drive into the seats above the Green Monster. With Boston leading 4-1 in the fourth, Ross hit another shot into the Monster seats after Pedro Ciriaco and Ellsbury singled. One pitch later, Gonzalez lofted a drive into the first row of seats in left, making it 8-1. “Obviously, Cody Ross had a big night there,” Konerko said. “Got a couple pitches to hit and didnt miss them.” Doubront allowed one run and four hits in six innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Three relievers held Chicago hitless in the final three innings. Chicago went ahead on Konerkos RBI single in the first, but Boston tied it in the bottom half on Gonzalezs run-scoring single. The 23-year old Hernandez was 7-2 in Double-A and pitched two games for Charlotte before getting the start. NOTES: Ross had his 10th career multihomer, third this season. ... First baseman Konerko played his 2,000 career game—all in a White Sox uniform and third-most in club history. Nellie Fox is next with 2,115. “Hell get his number retired (with Chicago),” Ventura said. “No way around it.” ... Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia, on the DL with strained right thumb, is eligible to return on Thursday. Valentine had a funny line to show how eager the infielder was: “He said he was ready about four days ago.” ... Ventura said Philip Humber will start on Sunday and Dylan Axelrod will go to the bullpen. ... The White Sox optioned RHP Jhan Marinez to Charlotte to make room for Hernandez. ... Chicagos Alejandro De Azas bat shattered and went flying into the stands about six rows behind the Red Sox on-deck circle and a male fan appeared to get a slight cut on the cheek. ... Ciriaco stole third in the fourth but was waved back by home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez, who interfered with catcher A.J. Pierzynski while he was throwing. Trent Richardson Jersey . Its all right there on film from two years ago. Thats when Darrelle Revis held the Houston Texans wide receiver to just one catch for 7 measly yards in the New York Jets 30-27 victory. Easy enough, right? Well, with Revis out for the season with a torn knee ligament, it will be Cromarties job Monday night to cover Johnson when the Jets (2-2) and Texans (4-0) tangle at MetLife Stadium. And, hes hoping for similar results. “Im just studying,” said the Jets cornerback, who has closely reviewed how Revis defended Johnson the last time the teams played. “Hes one of the best receivers in the game. Hes a big, physical receiver that can get in and out of his breaks. He knows how to use his body very well.” Johnson has shown that over and over throughout his impressive career. He has five seasons of 1,000 yards receiving or more, and is 76 yards shy of 10,000 for his career. If Johnson does it Monday night, he will become the sixth-fastest player in NFL history to accomplish the feat, doing it in his 127th game. “He reminds me of two great, great players that I was around: Jerry Rice and Rod Smith,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “The biggest comparison there is work habits, but I think the thing that Im most impressed with Andre for is when I came here, I think Andre might have been in year three. Just to watch, this day and time, for a player to stay the course with an expansion franchise like he did through some very tough times, tells you what hes all about as a person.” The stats also show that Johnson has been one of the games elite receivers—except against the Jets. In the 2009 season opener, he was also matched against Revis and managed four catches for 35 yards. “Of course, you know what type of player Darrelle Revis is, so you know that its going to be a great challenge,” Johnson said. “I dont change my preparation just because hes not playing. Im going to prepare like I always prepare for anybody. That doesnt change anything, just because hes not playing.” Maybe not for Johnson, but for the Jets, Revis absence is a major hurdle to overcome. Coach Rex Ryan considers Cromartie a No. 1-type cornerback, and the veteran has a chance to prove his coach right. Cromarties style is very different from Revis in that he relies on his speed and athleticism to make plays and isnt considered as physical as his All-Pro teammate. But Cromartie sizes up perfectly from a height standpoint: Johnson is 6-foot-3, while Cromartie is 6-2. “Playing against bigger receivers, it matches up very well for me,” Cromartie said. “I can use my length and things like that. Im really looking forward to it. This is my third time playing the Texans in my career and Ive never faced up against Andre. This is my first time facing him, so Im definitely looking forward to it.” With 16 catches this season, Johnnson is actually second to tight end Owen Daniels (19) in receptions on a Texans team that sets things up with Arian Foster and the running game. Jim Brown Womens Jersey. Foster has already carried the ball 103 times for 380 yards, and that makes things a lot easier for Matt Schaub. Schaub has thrown for 953 yards and seven touchdowns and one interception. He has also been sacked just three times. “You have to do both, eliminate the running game and turn a team into a one-dimensional team,” Cromartie said. “You have to try and make sure they throw the ball more than run the ball.” Thats because the Texans use a zone-blocking scheme that has helped them average more than 136 yards rushing a game. The more Houston runs and starts rolling, the more the Jets will have to stack the box to stuff Foster and backup Ben Tate—and that will potentially leave Cromartie and fellow cornerback Kyle Wilson in some one-on-one situations. “I know hes looking forward to the challenge,” defensive co-ordinator Mike Pettine said of Cromartie. “Hes prepared well for it all week. The back ends going to have to step up. This is a much better passing attack than what weve faced.” The Jets, on the other hand, are scrambling to replace top receiver Santonio Holmes, who suffered a season-ending foot injury last week against San Francisco. Rookie Stephen Hill, New Yorks second-round pick, is listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury—as is tight end Dustin Keller. That means three of Mark Sanchezs primary targets will likely not be out there Monday night. The Jets will need second-year receiver Jeremy Kerley, veteran Chaz Schilens, inexperienced Clyde Gates and newly signed Jason Hill to perform in a big way— or it could be yet another long night for Sanchez and the Jets struggling offence. “Theyre good players,” offensive co-ordinator Tony Sparano said. “Theyre just getting different opportunities now. I think thats part of this game. Part of this game is all about opportunity. Ive watched some players along the way here make the most of those opportunities when their number is called. Heres an opportunity for players to step up and thats what we have to do.” Holmes leads the Jets with 20 receptions, while backup tight end Jeff Cumberland is second with 11. Add in a lousy stretch by Sanchez and a running game thats averaging just 3.2 yards a carry, and the Jets offence has hardly resembled the one that was clicking all game in the opener when New York beat Buffalo 48-28. Kerley, who has 10 catches, is confident he and his fellow receivers can not only help make up for the loss of Holmes but silence the critics who think Sanchez has no one to throw to anymore. “We just go out there and do what we can do and handle what we can handle,” Kerley said. “At the end of the game, well let the score talk for itself and the stats talk for themselves.” ’ ’ ’
