Canadian Brent Hayden easily advanced through the 100-metre freestyle heats on

World silver medallist in the event, was left disappointed at Beijing 2008. A
hot favourite headed into that competition, he swam poorly in the semi-final to
finish 14th overall. Now back for his third Olympic Games, Hayden, 28, is
hopeful of a better finish. “In Beijing I htink I just went in with a little too
much confidence thinking I was good enough to save the energy and still make the
final,” Hayden told CTVOlympics. “(Its important to) just know that everybody is
trying to knock you out.” Haydens time was not the fastest of the trials—that
honour went to American Nathan Adrian in 48.19—but just 0.34 seconds out of
first, the swimmer from Mission, B.C.,  was very much in the mix. Canada has
never won an Olympic medal in the mens 100m freestyle. “No matter what happens
tonight I know Im going to walk out of there with no regrets, Ill know I gave it
everything I got,” he said. Hayden showed no lingering signs of the July 10 back
spasm that left him on a hotel floor, unable to move. Hayden suffered what he
has called the “second worst back spasm of [his] career” at a training camp in
Sardinia, but said he was fully recovered by the time he arrived in London.
Australias James Magnussen, the fastest sprinter of the world this year after
posting a time of 47.10s at the Australian Olympic trials in March, finished
just ahead of Hayden in 48.38. “I think I left a lot of room on the front end
and I can get a little bit of a lead on Magnussen,” Hayden said, “I know hes
going to come out like a Missile like his nickname,” he quipped. Yannick Agnel,
the Frenchman who won his second gold medal in as many nights in Mondays 200m
freestyle, also advanced, in 12th. Later on Tuesday, Canadians Scott Dickens of
Ancaster, Ont., and Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, Que., advanced to their
respective semi-final races. Lacroix, 28, posted a time of 2:09.25 to advance as
the 15th seed in the womens 200m butterfly, while teammate Katerine Savard
finished 19th and did not advance. Dickens, who finished 16th in the mens 100m
breaststroke over the weekend, posted a time of 2:10.95 in the 200m race.
Dickens was on pace to set a Canadian record for the first half of the race, but
slowed on the back end to post the 13th-fastest time of the morning. Japans
Kosuke Kitajima also advanced with a time of 2:09.43. Kitajima is the two-time
reigning Olympic champion in the event, as well as the Olympic record holder.
The United States and France set up another freestyle final showdown on Tuesday,
joining  Germany, Australia, Great Britain, China, South Africa and Hungary in
mens 4×200m freestyle relay top-eight. France won gold in the 4×100m race on
Sunday, while the United States took silver in that race. In the longer relay
race, the U.S. team of Charlie Houchin, Matthew McLean, Davis Tarwater and Conor
Dwyer finished first in the morning heats with a time of 7:06.75. France, made
up of Jeremy Stravius, Gregory Mallet, Amaury Leveaux and Clement Lefert, was
second in 7:09.18. Americans Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps, as well as Yannick
Agnel, of France, are all likely to find themselves subbed into the
Tuesday-evening final. Canadians Blake Worsley, Colin Russell, Tobias Oriwol and

felt some numbness in his fingers so he left the game. He made the most of his
return on Saturday. Lee homered and drove in three runs and the Miami Marlins
beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-4. “When I left here I told the trainer Im not
day-to-day, Ill be ready tomorrow,” said Lee, still sporting a cut on his right
cheek from the collision. “I hit the ball pretty good.” Mark Buehrle (13-12)
allowed four runs on seven hits over 7 2-3 innings to improve to 4-1 in his last
six starts. Jose Reyes had three hits and also drove in a run for Miami.
“Fortunately, we scored some runs early and I just tried to go out there and
keep them off base,” Buehrle said. Johnny Cueto (17-9) suffered his third
straight loss and failed to last five innings for the second straight start.
Cueto gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 1-3 innings, and hasnt won since August
28 at Arizona. Ryan Ludwick homered for the Reds. “He lost location. He was wild
high, missing away,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “And when he came in
throwing strikes, it was middle of the plate, belt high. Those are the ones that
hurt him.” The Marlins chased Cueto with a three-run fifth, capped by a two-run
homer by Lee, who hit a 3-1 pitch over the centre field scoreboard that gave

After Ruggiano and Reyes hit consecutive one-out singles, Giancarlo Stanton
drove in both with a triple. Lee then drove in Stanton with a sacrifice fly. “I
think we did a good job trying to make him (Cueto) throw the ball over the plate
and we made him work a couple innings,” Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. “We
ran the bases very well and took advantage of a couple extra bases. Obviously,
Carlos home run was huge. It gave us a little cushion.” NOTES: Buehrle has now
