BALTIMORE —Even though Adam Jones isnt from Baltimore, hes making sure itll be home for a while longer. Jake Locker Jersey . Jones signed a six-year, $85.5 million contract with the Orioles on Sunday, ensuring that the 26-year-old centre fielder will be with the team through 2018. “I fit here in this city. I fit here on this team. I fit in Camden Yards. I dont see myself wearing another white uniform that doesnt have Orioles across the chest,” said Jones, a native of San Diego. “Im not from Baltimore. This is now my town.” A fan favourite, Jones entered Sunday with a 17-game hitting streak and leads the team in home runs and RBIs. Vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette began negotiating a new deal with the 2009 All-Star weeks ago. Jones new deal includes a $2 million signing bonus, $8.5 million in 2013, $13 million each in 2014 and 2015, $16 million apiece in 2016 and 2017 and $17 million in 2018. It also includes a no-trade provision. “The dude rang the cash register every time he hit a home run,” Duquette said. After the Orioles and Jones agreed on a one-year, $6.15 million contract in February, avoiding arbitration, they began exploring an extension. “We started the process in spring training, and picked up some steam in the last couple of weeks,” Duquette said. Jones has been active in community affairs, something that Duquette referred to several times during Sundays announcement. “To have a great team in Baltimore, you have to find and keep players like Adam,” Duquette said. The news conference was attended by a local youth baseball team that Jones sponsors. “A lot of these kids look up to me, and I am a role model,” Jones said. Jones had one more year before he could have been a free agent, and he acknowledged he decided he wanted to stay in Baltimore some time ago. “Now, I dont have to worry about trade deadline, free agency,” Jones said. “I dont have to worry about any of that, just worry about being a part of the best team in baseball.” The Orioles have suffered through 14 straight losing seasons, and since Jones came to Baltimore in a trade from Seattle in 2008, the team hasnt won even 70 games. Entering Sundays game with Kansas City, the Orioles lead the AL East with a 29-18 record. “We have to prove to the fans that were for real. Were slowing doing it. This is a big step in that right direction,” Jones said. “Theres a bigger goal here, I believe, and thats winning games.” Rob Bironas Jersey .Y. —For all he might have gotten out of a Harvard education, Buffalo Bills starter Ryan Fitzpatrick is quick to acknowledge his Ivy League limitations when it comes developing as a quarterback. Today, we look back at perhaps the greatest first-round class ever – the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. When it comes to describing the quality of a given draft year, there always seems to be a few prevailing cliches going in. “Its going to a bumper crop.” “This looks like a weak class.” “This appears to be a draft thats deep in talent.” But comments like that are best made in hindsight when you can look back at those 20-30 players and tally up their list of achievements and accomplishments. That said, the first round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft is generally regarded as the best class of all-time. There were two factors that contributed to such a deep first round. The first was that it was done after the merger of the NHL and World Hockey Association. With the rival league gone, young players who got in a year of pro seasoning (like Rick Vaive, Mike Gartner and Michel Goulet) with now-defunct franchises were up for grabs. The lone exception to this was Wayne Gretzky, who had played for Edmonton in the WHAs final season. As part of the merger, the Oilers were allowed to keep Gretzky so long as they were placed at the bottom of the draft order. Could you imagine how much higher this class would be rated if the player many consider the best of all-time were eeligible? The 1979 draft class had another important advantage – it was a 19-year-old draft. Matt Hasselbeck Jersey. The NHL was lowering the age of eligibility from 19 to 18 and the move saw two years worth of picks to go in the same year. The end result was impressive, especially by todays standards. Of the 21 players selected, each of them played at least 200 NHL games and 11 would go on to play at least 1,000. Three of them (Gartner, Goulet and Ray Bourque – who went eighth to the Boston Bruins) would go on to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Other great NHLers coming out of that round included Mike Foligno, Brad McCrimmon, Brian Propp and Kevin Lowe. The best 18-year-old draft? That just might be the class of 2003. Of the 30 players taken, all of them would play at least one NHL game within eight years – with Marc-Andre Fleury, Eric Staal, Nathan Horton and Nikolay Zherdev all getting regular playing time with their new teams the following season. Through the 2011-12 campaign, 22 players from Round 1 have played at least 300 career NHL games and nearly a third of them have already won the Stanley Cup – including newly-crowned champions Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter and Mike Richards.
