CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. Haloti Ngata Womens Jersey . —Steven Fox played well while battling though some jitters in earlier matches. He did even better once he relaxed. Fox took advantage of a strong start to beat Chris Williams, the worlds top-ranked amateur, in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills on Friday. “I was nervous the first couple of matches, and for some reason, this match I kind of felt at home,” Fox said. “I was finally playing with the galleries and enjoyed myself out there, and really just had fun.” The 21-year-old Fox, from Hendersonville, Tenn., beat the 21-year-old Williams, from Moscow, Idaho, 4 and 2. A senior at the Tennessee-Chattanooga, Fox will play Brandon Hagy of Westlake Village, Calif., in the semifinals Saturday. The 21-year-old Hagy, one of two golfers from the University of California to reach the semifinals, beat Cheng-Tsung Pan of Taiwan 4 and 3. Michael Weaver of Fresno, Calif., who also a member of Cals golf team, beat Ricardo Gouveia of Portugal 4 and 3. Hell meet Alabamas Justin Thomas of Goshen, Ky., in the other semifinal. Thomas edged Australian Oliver Goss 2-up. Fox made two birdies in a bogey-free front nine. Williams had two bogeys. “This is by far the best thing Ive done in my career, by far,” Fox said. “I knew I had to play well and had to bring my A game, and luckily I did,” said Fox, who advanced to match play after winning a playoff in stroke-play qualifying. “But we started out and I got 2-up through four, and to be 4-up after nine was beyond expectations. I thought it was going to be a really close match. I give him respect for being the No. 1 amateur, but luckily I got it done.” Like Fox, Weaver parlayed a strong start into a victory over Gouveia, who hadnt trailed in any of his matches before the quarterfinals. Weaver was up by two holes after five and stretched his advantage to 4-up after nine. He failed to advance to match play in last year when he missed the cut by a stroke and had to survive a playoff just to get into match play this year. “Im having a great week. Couldnt be happier,” Weaver said. “Just to make it through the playoff was great. I feel like Ive played smart and Ive put myself in a great position.” The 19-year-old Thomas, 19, the Jack Nicklaus Award winner as the nations top collegiate player, was only 1-up on Goss heading into No. 18. Thomas was able to make par and the 18-year-old Goss, an incoming freshman at Tennessee, missed a long putt from the lip of the green to try to square the match. “It was a hard match,” Thomas said. “Youre obviously not going to get any easy matches at this point. It feels great to be moving on and Im very, very honoured.” Hagy birdied the seventh hole to take his first lead. He stretched his lead to 2-up when Pan, who plays for Washington, bogeyed No. 10. “I think that stretch right there … was huge,” Hagy said. “Then I birdied the next hole to go 1-up. That was a huge swing. I played really consistent the whole rest of the way.” Bernard Pierce Jersey . Introduced to IndyCar in 2009, the push to pass allows a driver to add turbocharger boost and additional RPM with the press of a button, located on the steering wheel, to complete a pass. The additional boost is added for a pre-determined amount of time, which is set by IndyCar race officials for each road/street course. It will be 100 seconds for the scheduled 85-lap race on the 1.75-mile, 11-turn Toronto street circuit. Push to pass will be disabled for practice and Saturdays qualifying session but will be re-enabled for Sundays warm-up session and race. “Its going to be very interesting, with that push to pass, how much power are we actually going to get, said Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti. “I know the numbers of boost, but how much will it actually translate on track, I think theres going to be quite a big difference. That, combined with the fact that you are now allowed to defend again this year, is going to make for some pretty interesting racing, and I think it will definitely liven things up a little bit.” Franchitti is the defending race winner at Toronto. He also won the 2009 IndyCar race there. His victory on this course came in the 1999 Champ Car event. “Ive always loved racing in Toronto,” Franchitti said. “I think it started off in 1997 when I was driving for Carl Hogan and had a pretty good start there, getting my first pole position. Ive always enjoyed the track and the challenge of the bumpy surface and the multiple surface changes there.”; After finishing 25th at Iowa, Franchitti dropped to eighth in the point standings. Ray Lewis White Jersey. The three-time defending series champion is now 70 points behind leader Will Power from Team Penske. Franchitti claimed the pole at Iowa but blew an engine during the pace laps, which put him out of the race before the green flag waved. Ryan Hunter-Reay from Andretti Autosport is the hottest driver in IndyCar right now. Hunter-Reay scored back-to-back victories at Milwaukee and Iowa. He is just three points behind Power. Prior to Milwaukee, he was sitting seventh in the rankings and trailed the leader by 75 points. “It all comes down to consistency, and thats how championships are won,” Hunter-Reay said. “We have to be consistent. We have to go week in and week out and be consistently strong and be within the top-five, for sure, every weekend and certainly the Penske team will and the Ganassi guys and also some wild cards will show up on a lot of these street and road courses. So we have to be good there.” Hunter-Reay has finished third in the last two races at Toronto. Power won there in 2010, but last year, he finished 24th after Franchitti made contact and spun him around during the mid-stages of the race. Franchitti was originally assessed a drive-through penalty for the contact, but his team successfully appealed the penalty moments later.
