Michael Phelps is reportedly looking to go for broke at the U. T.Y. Hilton Jersey .S. Swimming Trials in
Omaha next week, signing up for seven events. The Baltimore Sun reported on
Tuesday that the American swimmer will add the 400-metre individual medley to a
busy trials list that already includes the 200m IM, the 100m and 200m freestyle,
the 100m and 200m butterfly and the 200m backstroke. Phelps has so far kept his
Olympic cards close to his chest, keeping much of his London 2012 plans a
secret. If he chooses, the American swimmer will also be able to scratch from
any race he chooses once the trials get under way.  If he qualifies in every
race, however, he could—with the addition of three team relay opportunities
—compete in 10 races in London. At 26, Phelps is just three medals away from
becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time. Should Phelps qualify for the
400m IM, he could be setting up one of the most heated contests of London 2012.
The mens race is scheduled to be the first swimming event of the Games, and it
is one that American rival Ryan Lochte swims very well. And next weeks trials—
which on Monday will also kick off with the mens 400m IM —should show a
preview of the match-up. Phelps famously posted seven world-record times on his
way to an unprecedented eight Olympic gold medals in 2008. His total Olympic
tally—adding in those he earned at Athens 2004—is up to 16, to date.
Phelps current collection is second only to Larisa Latynina, a Soviet gymnast
who won 18 Olympic medals during her 12-year career. The swimming superstar has
said he will retire following the conclusion of the 2012 Games. The Olympic
swimming events will kick off in London with the mens 400m IM on Saturday, July

days it is not so much who is the best as much as it is who is playing the best
in December. The last two Super Bowl teams, Green Bay and the New York Giants,
were Super Bowl winners because they were healthy and playing exceptionally to
close out the season. Remember the Giants? They were 7-7 with two games to go,
and went on to beat the Jets and Cowboys to make the playoffs. They went on a
run of wins over Atlanta, Green Bay, San Francisco and finally the Patriots
21-17 in Indianapolis to win it all. The two “best teams” in football last year
were the two AFC and NFC losing teams, the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco
49ers. With that in mind, there are some teams that logic says will be there to
some degree this season. Green Bay won 15 games last year – they may not win 15
again this year but if they just improve moderately, with the best quarterback
in football, Aaron Rodgers, a playoff opportunity awaits. Baltimore in the AFC -
even without Terrell Suggs – will win at home and split on the road, and for
them, an absence of playoff experience is not possible. And yes, I remember last
year I picked them to finish third in the AFC North and not even make the
playoffs. I am picking Carolina as my surprise team of the season this year as
Ron Rivera as a head coach is, I feel, quietly underrated. In the AFC I like
Buffalo to surprise, not so much because of all the free agency money they spent
on the defensive line. Its more that Cordy Glen is a good lefft tackle and

guesses – I mean, my well-studied educated picks, beginning with Division
