New York moved a game ahead of Baltimore in the division on Monday and can secure its second straight and 12th AL East crown in the last 15 years with a victory on Tuesday coupled with an Orioles loss to Tampa Bay. The Yankees exploded for nine runs in the second inning of Mondays opener against the hapless Red Sox and got eight strong innings from CC Sabathia in a 10-2 rout. Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin and a returning Mark Teixeira all went deep during the second-inning outburst. Baltimore lost to Tampa, as New Yorks magic number for clinching the division was trimmed to two. “Thats what you hope to have all the time when youre playing this game, that you have control of your own destiny,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. “Now we have to go out and win a ballgame tomorrow.” The four homers tied a Yankees record for one inning, set initially at Toronto on June 30, 1977 and matched against Tampa Bay on June 21, 2005. Cano finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and Granderson collected two hits and knocked in two runs, while Teixeira reached the seats in his second at-bat of his first game back from a strained left calf that had sidelined the slugging first baseman for 30 of the Yankees last 31 contests. Sabathia (15-6) did his part on the mound as well, limiting the Red Sox to two runs and four hits while striking out seven over a sharp eight-inning stint that cemented his sixth straight season of at least 15 wins. The win also tied the Yankees with the AL West-leading Texas Rangers for the best record in the American League at 93-67. Counterpart Clay Buchholz (11-8) wasnt nearly as effective for Boston, permitting eight runs and six hits—including three of the homers—before being removed with two outs in the second. “Its tough whenever you leave pitches out of the middle of the plate and every one of them gets hit,” said Buchholz. “Thats what [New York] is known for. They hit mistakes.” Daniel Nava had a solo homer and Che-Hsuan Lin went 2-for-3 for the spiraling Red Sox, losers of six straight and 10 of their last 11 outings. New York will pin its hopes tonight on rookie David Phelps rather than the struggling Ivan Nova, who has pitched to a 7.05 ERA in the second half. Phelps hasnt started a game since Sept. 19 and is 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA in 10 starts this year, including 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in two against Boston. “Its a big deal,” Phelps said. “I want to pitch in big games. They dont get a whole lot bigger than down the stretch in a pennant race. ... It just shows they have faith in me pitching a big game.” Overall, he is 4-4 with a 3.34 ERA. Boston will counter with lefty Jon Lester, who will try to end what has been a disastrous season on a high note. A double-digit winner in each of the last four seasons, including a career-high 19 in 2010, Lester has stumbled to a 9-14 mark this year with a 4.94 ERA. Hes also lost his last three starts. Lester is 1-1 in four starts against the Yankees this season and 9-4 lifetime against them with a 4.27 ERA in 21 starts. New York is 11-5 against the Red Sox this season. Baltimore Orioles (92-68) at Tampa Bay Rays (89-71) – 7:10pm et (Sports Network) – The Tampa Bay Rays had their postseason hopes dashed on Monday. Now, theyll try to end the Baltimore Orioles chances at an American League East crown in the middle test of a three-game series at Tropicana Field. Despite winning for the 11th time in 12 games in Mondays opener, the Rays were eliminated from playoff contention when Oakland defeated Texas. Baltimore, meanwhile, has already secured at least a wild card berth, but fell one game back of the New York Yankees in the division on Monday with its 5-3 loss to the Rays. “We didnt take care of our business,” Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones said. “We lost. When it comes to the Yankees, we cant control them. We cant control if they win or lose.” Baltimores title hopes will end with another loss to Tampa Bay coupled with a Yankees defeat of Boston. Alex Cobb tossed seven strong innings in Mondays win, while Ben Zobrist homered and Chris Gimenez hit a two-run double in the victory. Tampa carried a 5-1 lead into the ninth inning, but the Orioles made things interesting, as Chris Davis two-run homer brought them within two and then put two runners on with no outs. However, Rays closer Fernando Rodney struck out Jim Thome and Mark Reynolds, and induced a grounder back to the mound by pinch-hitter Endy Chavez to end the game. “Were playing this like every other game were playing this year,” Orioles catcher Matt Wieters said. Mike Wallace Womens Jersey. . “Were going out there trying to win every game and well forget about this going into tomorrow.” Davis has now homered in five straight games. The last player to homer in six consecutive games was Rays first baseman Carlos Pena from June 6-12, 2010, and the last Orioles player to do it was Reggie Jackson in 1976. Tampa was trying to reach the postseason for the third straight season. “Honestly, it just is what it is,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “We had opportunities early in the year to win more games, and we did not. But so did everybody else.” Getting the call for the Orioles on Tuesday will be righty Miguel Gonzalez, who has won his last two starts. Gonzalez defeated Toronto on Wednesday, limiting them to two runs and five hits in seven innings, as he improved to 8-4 to go along with a 3.45 ERA. Baltimore has won eight of his last 10 starts, and Gonzalez is 6-2 in those outings. Gonzalez is 0-1 in three starts against the Rays with a 5.17 ERA. Tampa, meanwhile, will counter with righty James Shields, who will be trying to match his career-high win total of 16 he set last year. Shields did not register a decision on Thursday against the Chicago White Sox, as he allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. In his last 11 starts, Shields, who is 15-9 with a 3.62 ERA on the year, is 7-2 with a 2.10 ERA, and opponents are hitting just .176 against him with 74 strikeouts and only 14 walks. “Im happy with my season, happy with the way I finished strong,” Shields said. “I think my last 12 starts or so have been pretty solid. No matter what happens, I think I want to try to continue this next year.” Shields has faced the Orioles 23 times and is 9-6 against them with a 3.70 ERA. Baltimore is 9-7 versus the Rays this season. Texas Rangers (93-67) at Oakland Athletics (92-68) – 10:05pm et (Sports Network) - With their first postseason spot in six years secured, the Oakland Athletics now set their sights on a bigger prize. The As try to move into a first-place tie in the American League West on Tuesday in the middle test of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers at the Coliseum. Oakland secured its first playoff appearance since 2006 in Mondays opener, as Coco Crisp had two hits, including a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning, and scored twice to help the As win, 4-3. The hard-charging As, who have won seven of their last nine games, need to sweep Texas in order to win the American League West crown. “Absolutely amazing,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. “We dont get this done unless everybody believes in everybody and everybody plays unselfishly.” Crisp returned to the lineup Friday after missing nine starts with an infection in both eyes. Hes hitting .529 (9-for-17) with seven runs and two RBI in four games since coming back. Jarrod Parker (13-8) fanned six and surrendered three runs on six hits and two walks over six-plus frames to pick up the win. Pitching to chants of “Lets go Oakland!,” Grant Balfour struck out the side in the ninth and notched his 23rd save of the season. “They play with no conscience. Theyre not afraid of nobody right now,” said Rangers manager Ron Washington. Martin Perez (1-4) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in four-plus innings for Texas, which holds a one-game lead over Oakland and is tied with the New York Yankees for the best record in the American League. The Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox earlier on Monday. The Rangers can lock up their third straight division crown on Tuesday behind lefty Matt Harrison, who is 18-10 with a 3.26 ERA. Harrison beat Oakland on Thursday, despite allowing four runs in six innings. “I just want to do what Ive tried to do all year, give us a chance to win by putting up as many zeros as possible,” Harrison said. “That team is playing good baseball so it will be a tough start. But I feel confident I can go out and get the job done.” He is 6-1 lifetime versus the As with a 4.13 ERA in 12 games (9 starts). Oakland, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Travis Blackley, who lasted just one inning in a loss to the Rangers on Thursday. He was hit for five runs and five hits – 2 HRs – in that one and fell to 5-4 on the year to go along with a 4.25 ERA. “The last time they just hit him, and thats going to happen,” Melvin said. “You have to keep having faith in him and confidence in him. Were going to continue to support him and have confidence in him, and if he has a bad game or two, thats not going to change how we feel about him.” Blackley has faced the Rangers five times and is 2-2 with a 6.85 ERA. Oakland is 9-8 against Texas this season. ’ ’ ’
