Chris Salamida was spectacular on the mound for the Winnipeg Goldeyes Thursday afternoon, but his teammates couldnt get him even one run of support. The Goldeyes were edged 1-0 by the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks before 4,523 fans at Newman Outdoor Field. The loss, which was Winnipegs third in four games in Fargo this week, pushes the Goldeyes six and a half games back of Fargo for first place in the American Associations North Division and squeezes their lead in the wild card race to four games over the Kansas City T-Bones. The only run in the game was scored by the RedHawks in the eighth inning, as Marco Rodriguez singled with one out and then scored on a Zach Penprase two-out double. Winnipegs bats struggled in the game, as the team collectively had four hits, including three from Amos Ramon. The Goldeyes best chance to break Fargos shutout came in the eighth inning. With one out, Ramon singled and then went to third on a Kyle Day single. However, Mike Coles grounded into a double play to end the threat. It was one was three double plays the Goldeyes hit into in the game. Salamida was charged with the run in the eighth after being relieved by Chris Allen, but still had a solid outing. Through seven and a third innings, Salamida allowed just four hits, walked only one and struck out six, but suffered the loss. Fargos starter Jake Laber earned the win after also going seven and a third innings, while Tom Boleska pitched the ninth for his 26th save of the season. The Goldeyes return home to begin a three-game series Friday night against the St. Paul Saints. Winnipeg leads the Saints by five games for the American Associations wild card spot. The pre-game show on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds begins at 6:30 p.m. Haloti Ngata Jersey . The stocky centre from Belarus put a spectacular spin move on the Montreal defence and got the game-winner 1:23 into overtime on Saturday night to lift the Leafs to a 5-4 victory over the rival Canadiens.Storm clouds are gathering. But its still too early to say the Blue Jays are beginning a plunge out of the playoff race. There is no denying Texas took the Jays apart over the weekend. The Jays gave up a total of 34 runs in three games as their losing streak grew to a season high of five. Their starting pitchers, Morrow, Alvarez and Drabek lasted a total of nine-and-a-third innings and Alvarez got tossed out of Saturdays game after throwing a pitch low and inside after giving up three straight home runs. Not a great call by home plate ump Marty Foster. The injury concerns outweigh the losses. Kelly Johnson has a lefty hamstring problem that forced him to miss two games and required a cortisone shot. Shortstop Yunel Escobar has a left groin injury and had to come out of Sundays game early. The bullpen was over-worked, forcing the recall of pitchers Jesse Chavez and Las Vegas closer Chad Beck and the demotion of Yan Gomes and reliever Ryota Igarashi. The Jays have slipped to fourth in the East and out of the second Wild Card position and theyre back at .500 at 24-24. But right behind them, a half game back are the Angels, the Tigers and the Red Sox. So this where the real fun starts and the battle intensifies for a post-season berth. Lately, there has been a lot of focus on left fielder Eric Thames for his lack of power and run production. While it is true that Thames only has three homers and 11 runs batted in and 0 stolen bases to go with a .243 average, a lot of his other numbers arent all that different from Brett Lawries. Thames has 11 extra base hits while Lawrie only has eight. Their home run totals are equal at three and Lawrie has six more runs batted in. Brett is hitting .273 with seven stolen bases. But in walks versus strikeouts, Thamess has nine and 39 while Lawrie has eight and 33.dddddddddddd Bretts numbers – except in stolen bases – are down in every category from a year ago. Thats not a knock, hes only 22 and still plays every game like it is his last. He inspires his teammates and the fans. But it just shows you how much more is expected out of Thames at age 25, to the extent that Gomes is going to get some playing time in left in Las Vegas, time that eventually will be taken away from Thames when Gomes gets back to Toronto. In light of the losing streak, this weeks six-game homestand against Baltimore and Boston is crucial. The Orioles are still tied for first in the East with Tampa Bay, yet they have lost five out of seven and the Baltimore fans and media are starting to wonder if the end is near. As one partial headline in the Baltimore Sun put it, a sense of doom lingers. They are 5-1 against the Jays this season, something John Farrell and company have to start turning around over the next three nights at Rogers Centre. Canadians around MLB Great to see Justin Morneau finally coming back into his own with the Twins. After a long battle with concussion issues and other assorted injuries, Morneau ran off a string of four homers in five games last week and now has nine on the season to go with 23 runs batted in. Another Canadian youve got to be pulling for is the Cubs Ryan Dempster. The 35-year-old righty has a sparkling 2.14 ERA, yet hes 0-3 thanks to Chicagos chronic inability to score runs. Dempster is actually winless in 17 starts dating back to last August despite pitching well. Hes in the final year of a four-year, $52 million deal and is certain to draw some big time interest as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches. In fact, he would be a great fit for the Jays. ’ ’ ’
