INDIANAPOLIS —NASCAR team owner Roger Penske will meet with suspended driver A. Stevan Ridley Jersey .J. Allmendinger this week to discuss his future with the team. Speaking to reporters at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway before Sundays Brickyard 400, Penske acknowledged that there were no guarantees Allmendinger would get his ride in the No. 22 car back once he has completed a NASCAR-mandated recovery program—Allmendingers only path to return from his indefinite suspension for a violation of NASCARs substance abuse policy. “Theres so many different questions on, Does he keep the ride? Does he not?” Penske said. “We dont know when hes going to be back. There are sponsor obligations. He has a year contract with us. So theres lots of things happening. And quite honestly, our phone is ringing off the hook with people who are interested in the ride in the 22.” Allmendinger was suspended July 7 after he tested positive in late June. NASCAR extended his suspension indefinitely this week after his backup urine sample confirmed his initial positive test. NASCAR has not said what substance Allmendinger was suspended for, but his business manager has said it was an amphetamine. Allmendinger has said he didnt knowingly ingest a banned substance and has hired an independent laboratory to help determine what caused the positive test. “I have a very open mind, but I want to sit down face to face with him, which is the only fair way to do it to determine what is the best thing for the team and for him,” Penske said. “We have a lot invested to him to this date, and hes invested a lot in the sport. I want to see him land on his feet. ... There are so many factors. Our policies, you have people within your company if something like this would happen, what action would you take?” Penske said his employees are subject to random drug testing and he has released employees who have tested positive in the past. But Penske said Allmendinger is considered an independent contractor, not a full-time employee, and isnt necessarily subject to the same policies. “I think we have to take a look at that,” Penske said. “I mean, theres our situation from a company perspective on the rules and policies that we have internally. And then theres the external situation, when youre dealing with the commercial side of our business, (which) is different. That has to be weighed in also.” Penske said he told Allmendinger that other people with higher profiles have bounced back from similar career-threatening issues. “I certainly didnt want to see this happen,” Penske said. “Bigger people than you have made mistakes and come back and been able to benefit from the experience and be a bigger and better person. I hope that hell rebound and have a successful career because hes a terrific kid. And it almost feels like its one of your kids. Thats what makes it so tough.” Penske acknowledged that Allmendinger would serve as an example. “It sends a real broad message across this garage area, which I think is one of the great things about NASCAR: Theres very few irregularities of this type that weve seen over the last couple of years,” Penske said. “You look at other sports, stick and ball sports, theres other things, and I think thats a credit to the way NASCAR runs it. And to me, unfortunately, he becomes an example. And weve got to move on and I think that he understands that, and Im going to (do) everything I can to (put) one thought in his mind: Lets move on here.” Sam Hornish Jr. is filling in for Allmendinger at least through next weekends race at Pocono, and potentially beyond that. Rainbow throws from quarterbacks on opposite ends of their careers may have done the trick. The 37-year-old Batch completed 11 of 14 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown to bolster his hopes of playing a 15th season and the Pittsburgh Steelers held off a late rally by Clausen and the Carolina Panthers for a 17-16 preseason victory on Thursday night. Brandon Lloyd Jersey . He just wants everyone to know hes ready to play next season, too. The Stanford quarterback said Thursday he could co-exist as Mannings teammate even though his preference would be to play immediately. Wes Welker Jersey . Justin Masterson handled New Yorks power-packed lineup for 6 2-3 innings and Michael Brantley hit a three-run homer as the Cleveland Indians snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Yankees on Saturday night. LOS ANGELES —Former champion Lyoto Machida stopped Ryan Bader with one punch midway through the second round of the UFCs latest prime-time network show Saturday night, getting a knockout that might have earned him a chance to reclaim his title. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua stopped Brandon Vera in the main event with a flurry of strikes with 50 seconds left in the fourth round for another dramatic finish. After the fights, UFC President Dana White said Machida had earned another light heavyweight title shot with his sudden victory. White promised a shot at the winner of champion Jon “Bones” Jones bout with veteran Dan Henderson next month to the fighter who was most impressive at Staples Center, although the date could be tough to keep immediately. Machida (18-3) had the light heavyweight belt until Rua took it from him with a first-round knockout in May 2010. Machida failed to reclaim the belt last December from Jones, who stopped him with a standing guillotine choke in Toronto for the formerly formidable Brazilians third loss in four fights. Machida looked impressive again in flattening Bader (14-3), who also has lost to Jones. “I think it was a great performance, and I want to say, the Dragon is back,” Machida shouted, citing his own nickname. Machida needed just one big right hand 90 seconds into the second round to knock out Bader, who spent the first round warily staying outside Machidas dangerous karate-based style. Machida picked apart Bader to win the opening round, and when Bader attempted to close the distance, the Brazilian star ducked slightly and apparently rendered Bader unconscious with a punch square to his face. White hyped up interest in the Los Angeles show by claiming he would choose the next title contender from this bunch of fighters with signiificant recent defeats on their records. Aaron Hernandez Jersey. The UFC could be more interested in matching Jones against welterweight star Georges St. Pierre next year, but Machida did everything possible to get back on a title track. Earlier, Joe Lauzon ended a thrilling bout with veteran Jamie Varner by securing a triangle choke midway through the third round. Mike Swick also returned from a 30-month octagon absence for a second-round knockout of DaMarques Johnson. Rua (21-6) survived a grueling fight with the veteran Vera (12-6), bouncing back from multiple spots of trouble and pushing through fatigue that slowed both fighters midway through the scheduled five-round bout. Rua finally got rid of Vera with a series of strikes that began with a precise right hook to Veras jaw. Veras mouthpiece apparently came loose, distracting him moments before Rua finished him with a few more strikes to celebrate his first victory in nearly a year. “Ill improve, but youll see my best for sure in the future,” Rua said. “The most important thing is a victory. I respect Brandon a lot. It was a good fight. I was a little tired from the second to the third round, more than I expected.” Rua lost his light heavyweight title to Jones in his first defence in March 2011, and Rua lost again to Henderson last November in a five-round brawl. Varner was a last-minute replacement opponent for Lauzon, a reliably entertaining Massachusetts fighter who still had lost three of his past six bouts. Varner is a former WEC champion who returned to the UFC with an upset victory over Edson Barboza in May. Although Varner controlled the entertaining first round, he couldnt keep up later with Lauzon, who rallied with strikes that set up superb ground work ending with his legs cinched around Varners neck. ’ ’ ’
