SAN DIEGO —Jason Kubel and the Arizona Diamondbacks made spacious Petco Park
look like a hitters park. Nick Perry Womens Jersey . Kubel hit two of
Arizonas four home runs to help the Diamondbacks beat San Diego 8-5 Saturday
night, snapping a seven-game losing streak against the Padres. Aaron Hill and
Justin Upton had solo homers as Arizona finished with 15 hits. Uptons home run
went an estimated 443 feet to dead centre field. “Its still a big park,” Upton
said. “We just got into a few balls and they carried.” Upton had a season-high
four hits and Jake Elmore added two RBIs as the Diamondbacks closed to 5 1/2
games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild-card berth. “Its nice to finally
beat these guys,” Kubel said. “It seems like a really long time. We really need
wins, as many as we can get, and this is a start.” Kubel hit a two-run homer in
the first inning. Hill led off the third with his 22nd homer before Kubel
followed two pitches later for his career-high 29th home run. “We came out
swinging the bats, everybody really,” Kubel said. “We scored early and kept it
going.” Upton connected off Miles Mikolas in the fifth inning on a line drive
that gave the Diamondbacks a 7-4 lead. “To be honest with you, I was trying to
hit the ball back up the middle and he left the ball up,” said Upton. “I wont
say it was a no-doubter over the fence, but I knew it was going to carry to at
least the fence.” Rookie Wade Miley (15-9) won despite giving up five runs and
eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. The left-hander struck out six and had three walks
to snap his streak of 24 consecutive starts without issuing more than two walks.
“I got frustrated early and stayed frustrated,” Miley said. “I threw pitches in
middle of the plate and they made me pay.” Said Upton: “Hes been good for us all
year, and it was our turn to return the favour. It was nice.” J.J. Putz struck
out the side in the ninth for his 29th save in 34 chances. San Diego had
outscored the Diamondbacks 48-25 during the seven-game win streak. The Padres,
who came in having won 13 of 17 games, lost at home for just the sixth time in
23 games. “When we made a mistake, they had a pretty good swing at it,” San
Diego manager Bud Black said. “Even when we made some pitches, they had some
good swings.” Kubel broke out of a recent slump with his fourth multi-homer game
this season. He was batting just .140 (6 for 43) in his last 14 games. “Lately,
its been coming around and I have been hitting balls harder,” Kubel said. “Its
starting to feel better, more consistent. Just hoping to keep the feeling
going.” Both of Kubels homers and Hills home run came off rookie Casey Kelly
(1-1), who only lasted into the third inning in his third major-league start.
Kelly, a prized prospect acquired by the Padres from Boston in the
Adrian Gonzalez trade, was hit hard for the second straight start. The righty
allowed six runs and eight hits in 2 1-3 innings. “Obviously today, you never
want it to happen,” Kelly said. “But at the same time, Im going to learn a lot
from this. Its just going to make me better down the road.” After Kubel hit a
two-run homer in the first, Jesus Guzman got San Diego even with a two-run
double in the bottom of the inning. Logan Forsythe hit a two-run homer for San
Diego in the fourth to cut Arizonas lead to 6-4. NOTES: Kubel has 10 multi-homer
games in his career. ... Miley has given up more than three earned runs only six
times in 25 starts. ... San Diego LF Carlos Quentin missed his second straight
game and third this week with right knee irritation. ... Padres starting pitcher
Clayton Richard was back with the team after his wife, Ashley, gave birth to a
son. .. The series concludes Sunday with a pair of rookies throwing—Arizona
LHP Patrick Corbin (5-6, 4.13 ERA) and San Diego LHP Andrew Werner (1-1, 3.00).
James Jones Jersey . Fielder hit a
tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth inning and Delmon Young followed with
a solo shot to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 7-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on
Thursday and a split of the four-game series. Aaron Rodgers Youth Jersey . McCoy started at
second base for Saturdays game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Nix played second
base in Fridays 6-4, 11-inning win over the Rays but came out of the game in the
second inning after Sean Rodriguez slid into him in breaking up a double play.
. In response to the governments call, a total of 35 private companies have been
engaged in the crop cultivation there. So far, 249,274 acres (over 100,000
hectares) have been put under the crop in the region, the report said. Clay Matthews Jersey . The Croats played
without star midfielder Luka Modric and forward Ivica Olic but still dominated.
Captain Corluka scored in the 16th minute and Kalinic followed two minutes later
after a great pass from Eduardo da Silva. Bryan Bulaga Jersey . Fielder got to jog
around the bases after a go-ahead three-run home run for the Tigers, an inning
before Jackson raced home for his first career inside-the-park homer in Detroits
6-2 victory over the AL West-leading Texas Rangers on Friday night. SOUTH
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. —Arms outstretched in the air with a smile from ear-to-ear,
Noriatsu Osaka couldnt contain his glee. Neither could his teammates from Tokyo
after Osakas third home run of the game put an exclamation point on Japans 12-2
victory over Tennessee in five innings in the Little League World Series title
game Sunday. The 12-year-old Osaka added a triple for good measure, too, to top
off his 4-for-4 afternoon. In a symbolic gesture, Japans players jogged the
traditional postgame victory lap carrying the flags for both their home country
and the United States. “We had such a great time in Pennsylvania and we really
played a good game today. It was kind of a, Thanks,” Osaka said through an
interpreter. Starter Kotaro Kiyomiya struck out eight in four innings and added
an RBI single for Japan. The game ended in the fifth after Osakas third homer
made it a 10-run game. “We thought we played the best in the tournament so far,
especially to win by the 10-run rule in the finals,” said 12-year-old Rintaro
Hirano, who homered in the fourth to make it 10-1. A day after pounding out a
24-16 win over California in the U.S. title game, the Goodlettsville, Tenn.,
sluggers could only muster two hits—solo shots by Brock Myers and Lorenzo
Butler. It was a bittersweet final game for two teams that grew close during
their two weeks in South Williamsport. They exchanged customary postgame
handshakes at the plate before Japan received the World Series championship
banner and took their warning-track run. “Tennessee was our best friends in the
U.S. division,” Kiyomiya said. Japans jog finally stopped in front of the teams
giddy cheering section as proud family members and friends stood
shoulder-to-shoulder to take pictures through the infield fence. There were so
many highlights, including five home runs off Tennessee pitching. That was more
than enough offence for 13-year-old ace Kiyomiya, who had a fastball clocked in
the high-70s, The right-hander with the hitch in mid-delivery pitched like a
big-league ace in allowing just one hit. Regardless, this is still a banner year
for Goodlettsville after its exhausting victory Saturday over Petaluma, Calif.,
for the U.S. championship. That game set a record for most combined runs in the
World Series. The thrilling victory kept the Tennessee players and their
families up late into the night. “(The parents) must have partied harder than
the kids did,” manager Joey Hale said. “I knew wed be flat today.” Tennessee
lost a 10-run lead in the bottom of the sixth of that game before scoring nine
timmes the next inning to finally put away Petaluma in a Little League classic.
Charles Woodson Womens Jersey. Even more
impressively, Butler had three homers and a record nine RBIs—a feat so unique
the 12-year-olds name became a trending topic on Twitter. Butler went deep again
off reliever Osaka in the fifth—Butlers fourth homer in two days—to cut
the lead to 10-2 and give Goodlettsvile some home hope. Tennessees mini-mashers
have proven they can break out any time at the plate. “It feels really good and
it was really great,” Butler said simply about his hitting exploits. He said his
three homers Saturday were the longest he had hit all season. Its pitching depth
sapped, Tennessee turned to right-hander Justin Smith to start against Japan—
the first time the 12-year-old had pitched in the World Series or in Southeast
regional tournament. “Everybody knew our pitching was depleted and we were bound
for a letdown,” Hale said. “Im not saying we were going to beat Japan. I think
they were the best team here at everything by far, pitching, hitting. But I
think last night is how we want to be remembered.” Leadoff hitter Osaka, 12,
didnt waste any time with a first-pitch triple to the right-field corner in the
first. Kiyomiya delivered his RBI single two batters later to get the scoring
started. Osaka then homered in the second to left-centre, just in front of the
“Little League” sign above the fence, before leading off the fourth with his
second homer, this time to centre, for a 6-1 lead. The Kitasuna league all-star
team from Tokyo won Japans eighth Little League title and second in three
seasons. While his players danced around in delight after the game, skipper
Yoichi Kubo teared up. He kept his composure after managing a team that won the
World Series in 2001, “but I was crying this time when we won this game as world
champion,” he said. Smith pitched admirably in a tough spot, allowing five runs
and seven hits over three innings while striking out three. His team was trying
to make history as the first squad from Tennessee to win youth baseballs biggest
prize. Goodlettsville also was the first Tennessee team to advance to South
Williamsport since Morristown in 1987. The suburban Nashville crew counts among
its fans Rays ace David Price, who is from Murfreesboro. They might be done with
baseball for now, but the celebration is just beginning back home. On Tennessees
social calendar is a visit to the Vanderbilt season opener Thursday night
against South Carolina. “When we get home, its going to be a carnival,” Hale
said. ’ ’ ’
