MIAMI —LeBron James and Dwyane Wade carried the Miami Heat offence in the
second half. Mario Williams Jersey . With Chris Bosh gone,
they had no other choice. And if Bosh doesnt return soon, it may have to become
a trend. James accepted his third MVP trophy from Commissioner David Stern
before the game, then scored 26 of his game-high 32 points while playing every
second of the second half—adding a season-high 15 rebounds as well—to help
the Heat survive some rough stretches and pull out a 95-86 victory over the
Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series Sunday
night. Wade scored 29 points for the Heat, but the concern level was ramped up
considerably afterward because of Bosh, who did not play in the second half
because of a lower abdominal strain. The Heat said Monday that Bosh was out
indefinitely after an MRI exam confirmed the diagnosis. “Our brother is going to
go (Monday) to see if he can get back out there and play with us,” Wade said.
“If not, then weve got to have someone step up very big. You cant fill
Chris Boshs shoes.” David West and Roy Hibbert each scored 17 points and
combined for 23 rebounds for the Pacers, who got 10 points each from
Darren Collison and George Hill. Indiana controlled long stretches of the first
half and didnt trail by more than two points at any time until the fourth
quarter, when it was outscored 25-16. Wade and James scored 42 points in the
second half, while Indianas entire roster managed 38. “We started to get
defensive stops,” James said. “We started getting things rolling.” Game 2 is
Tuesday in Miami. James scored 16 points alone in the fourth, matching Indianas
total. Nonetheless, the Pacers sounded confident for days leading up to the
start of the series, and left Sunday night sounding the same way. “We have the
capability to beat these guys,” said Hibbert, who was guarding Bosh on the play
when he got hurt. Bosh caught a pass from James near the foul line late in the
first half, took one dribble to start a drive past Hibbert, got down the lane
and dunked the ball hard with his left hand while the Indiana centre appeared to
hit his right arm. Bosh fell forward as he landed, resting on his hands and
knees for about 15 seconds before getting up slowly. He made his free throw, and
as he headed back the other way he grimaced and grabbed at his midsection. He
was defending Hibbert on the ensuing possession, simply letting him get off a
shot as he fell forward to his hands and knees again. Bosh looked at the Miami
bench, got up and headed to the locker room for evaluation. He did not return,
and sitting courtside, his wife, Adrienne, covered her anguished expression with
her hands as he hobbled off. “We hope for the best,” James said. Added Hibbert:
“I didnt even know what happened to him. I made a clean play. I fouled him.” The
Pacers were called for 31 fouls on Sunday, and that was not one of the ones they
argued. In the days before the series, Indiana coach Frank Vogel got the leagues
attention—and a $15,000 fine—for accusing Miami of flopping in an effort
to sway foul calls. Stern said in a televised interview Sunday that he would
have fined Vogel more, though acknowledged it may be time to examine if flopping
should be further addressed by the league. Either way, Vogels words didnt seem
to have much effect on Sundays game. And even after Vogel said his team
committed too many fouls to be successful in Game 1, the Pacers took issue
afterward with the 31-22 discrepancy in fouls and 38-28 discrepancy in
free-throws attempted. “You saw the stat sheet,” Pacers forward Danny Granger
said. “Thats all Im going to say about that.” Also on that stat sheet: Granger
shot 1 for 10 in the game, scoring only seven points. “I dont know if hes going
to have a huge offensive series,” Vogel said. “When you have to guard the MVP
for 38 minutes, it takes a lot out of your offensive game.” Indiana shot 50 per
cent in the first half and 30 per cent in the second, missing its final nine
shots. “We definitely let this one get away,” Indianas Paul George said. “It
seemed like we werent supposed to win this one. Everybody in this room knew we
had this game.” Everything was undecided until the final moments. Hill made a
3-pointer with 4:51 left, getting Indiana within 86-85. But the Pacers went cold
from the field, James had a dunk in transition to make it 90-85 with 4:10 left,
and his jumper with 31.8 seconds remaining wrapped up the Heat win. Heat coach
Erik Spoelstra told James he would get him a quick rest somewhere in the second
half. Eventually, Spoelstra realized that wasnt going to happen. “I just looked
at him straight in the eyes and said, You can flat-out not get tired, period,”
Spoelstra said. “And he made MVP plays on both ends of the court.” Wade shot
only 8 for 23 from the field, and the Heat missed all six of their attempts from
3-point range—a first in team playoff history. But the Heat held a 45-38
rebounding edge, and allowed Indiana to make only 11 of 37 shots after halftime.
Still, the Pacers werent shaken afterward. “Were not just here to play. Were
here to win,” Hibbert said. “We need to win Game 2 and come back strong.” NOTES:
Miami is allowing 83 points per game so far in the playoffs. ... The Heat
extended their franchise record with a 59th straight home playoff sellout. ...
Hibbert has at least 10 rebounds in five of his six playoff games so far this
year. ... Darren Collison had six assists for Indiana, with three turnovers—
two more than he had, total, in five games against Orlando in the first round.
Stephon Gilmore Jersey . Josh Willingham,
however, might be the teams most valuable player at this point. He came through
again in the clutch Sunday. Ryan Fitzpatrick Jersey .C. —Down to 12

three-shot lead into the final round after shooting a 1-under 71 in the morning.
Scott Chandler Jersey . Its the first crash
this week on Indys 2.5-mile oval. Clauson completed the first three laps of his
four-lap run and was starting the final lap when his car bobbled going through

the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins moved within a victory of tying the team
record for the most in a month with a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on
Saturday.MIAMI—Shane Battier will be with the Miami Heat this season.
Mario Chalmers is deciding if hell be there with him. Saying he only wants “a
winning role” at this point in his career, Battier announced Thursday morning
that he would sign with the Eastern Conference champion Heat. Miami let him know
as soon as the free-agency shopping window formally opened this week that he was
the Heats top signing priority—even though the team has some question marks
at the point guard and centre spots. “Over the last week, Ive played out every
scenario in my head over and over,” Battier wrote on Twitter. “It always came
back to one thing for me: a winning role.” So the role Battier wants is clear.
The role Chalmers wants is as well: Hed like to be Miamis starting point guard
again, and said he will decide by Friday morning whether to re-sign with Miami
or accept an offer elsewhere. If Chalmers signs with another club, Miami would
have three days to match the offer because he is a restricted free agent. “Its
in their hands,” said Chalmers, who wore Heat gear for his workout at the arena
Thursday and averaged 11.8 points per game in last seasons NBA finals. “Lets see
what they do.” Heat forward Udonis Haslem sounded hopeful that Chalmers and the
Heat can reach a deal. “Championships are why we play this game,” Haslem said.
“If he can come here and have an opportunity to win a championship and get
somewhat close to the financial things that hes looking for, then I think its a
perfect situation for him. Thatll be up to him.” The Battier-to-Miami move is a
Duke reunion of sorts. Heat CEO Nick Arison has a close relationship with
Battier from their time together in college. Nick Arison, the son of Heat owner
Micky Arison, was the Duke team manager when Battier played for the Blue Devils,
including when Mike Krzyzewskis club won the 2001 national title. Battier wrote
that the lockout gave him a lot of time “to consider what was important to me at
this stage of my life and career.” Predictably, his decision was well-received
by his soon-to-be teammates. “Happy and excited to have u (a part) of the Heat,”
LeBron& James wrote to Battier on Twitter. Fred Jackson Jersey. The Heat are not
expected to be able to comment on the Battier decision until Friday. No
contracts can be formally signed until the new collective bargaining agreement
is completed, a process that is now in its final stages. Battier—who almost
certainly could have made more elsewhere—is expected to be at Miamis first
training-camp practice, tentatively scheduled for Friday afternoon. “Defensive
mindset, defensive mentality,” Haslem said. “Hes proven to be a winner.” The
Heat have monitored free agent centre Eddy Curry for several months, even having
him in for a workout last season before the lockout began, and are expected to
at least give him as look in camp. Curry has been in only 10 NBA games since the
start of the 2008-09 season, but Haslem recalls times when Curry was a matchup
problem for Shaquille ONeal. “If we have an opportunity add a guy like that to
our roster, it can only improve our chances,” Haslem said. NBA Development
League guard Cameron Jones has also been invited to camp. Jones has been with
the Fort Wayne Mad Ants this season. Chalmers referred to Miami as “home,” said
he would like to be back, and added that his motivation for this season is a
return trip to the finals. “I had a taste of it last year,” Chalmers said. “I
want to go through it again and actually get a ring this time.” For his career,
Battier has averaged 9.6 points and 4.7 rebounds. The 33-year-old is entering
his 10th NBA season, having previously played for Memphis and Houston. With
Mike Miller sidelined while recovering from hernia surgery, and James Jones not
necessarily assured of returning to Miami, the Heat wanted to add another
veteran shooter who can extend defences—and Battier seemed like the right
fit. Hes a 38 per cent shooter from 3-point range for his career, and he had 27
games with multiple 3-pointers last season. Plus, hes still considered a strong
defender. “If he comes, hes more than welcome,” Chalmers said. “Id like to see
him be a part of the Heat organization. Its a good organization and I wish the
best for him.” ’ ’ ’
