As Andy Fantuz was greeted by both cheers and boos in his return to Regina – in a game the former Most Outstanding Canadian and his Hamilton Tiger-Cats ended up winning – we were reminded again that this past off-season was full of change with several star players changing addresses. Brandon Marshall Womens Jersey . Fantuz was amongst a surprisingly large group of high profile CFLers switching teams this off-season, either via trade or free agency. And, just like every other year, some off-season moves pay bigger dividends than others. Its time to give out some admittedly early grades on the big off-season acquisitions. Theres plenty of time for minds to be changed on players, but after five games of the 2012 season The Rouge looks at which off-season pickups have had the biggest early impacts for their new teams. No doubt, the biggest acquisition ahead of the season was Ricky Ray, who was added by the Toronto Argonauts after finishing last in the East. Ray has been solid so far but the most important stat is the Argos record – 3-2. Under Ray, the Argos are tied atop the East Division – and the league – in the standings and unlike last year, they have a chance to compete for the 100th Grey Cup later this year in Toronto. While Rays stats are good, the Southern Ontarios other new quarterback Henry Burris has been great. Burris, acquired from Calgary via trade, has been outstanding for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats during their recent three-game win streak. Burris has thrown a league-leading 15 touchdown passes compared to just three interceptions. Initial impressions suggest the Ticats may have gone 2-2 with their big off-season splashes. Fantuz is second on the team in both receptions (23) and receiving yards (337) and has two touchdowns through five games. Burris and Ray were the headliners in their respective trades, but the returning pieces have been key early this season as well. Drew Tate entered the season as Calgarys clear cut QB1, but the Stampeders were wise to secure a veteran like Kevin Glenn for worst-case scenarios. Now, Tate is likely out for the year and Glenn, pressed into action, is keeping the teams playoff and Grey Cup hopes alive. And while Steven Jyles has certainly struggled with consistency issues, he is the pivot of a 3-2 team tied for first in the West. A number of new Saskatchewan Roughriders have helped the team jump out to a 3-2 start to varying levels including offensive linemen Dominic Picard and Brendan LaBatte and defensive end Odell Willis, who has one sack early this season. Five games into the 2012 CFL season, the Rouge asks: What off-season acquisition has had the biggest early season impact for his new team? It was a good day for the Chicago White Sox. Pinch hitter Eduardo Escobar lined an RBI single in the 10th inning and the White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 Sunday. Lance Briggs Youth Jersey . Hesjedal, who is from Victoria, is the first Canadian to ever lead the race. Domenico Pozzovivo took the eighth stage thanks to a break just under seven kilometres from the finish of the gruelling 229-kilometre leg from Sulmona to Lago Laceno to win in six hours six minutes five seconds. Israel Idonije Jersey . – Guy Boucher obviously enjoys Steven Stamkos offensive skills. DETROIT —Tom Wilhelmsen had already allowed two hitters to reach base when Detroits Delmon Young hit a deep fly to right-centre field. The ball stayed in the air for a while before Ichiro Suzuki finally caught it. “Like two hours,” Wilhelmsen joked. “I just looked up and saw Ichie make this grab and was like, Thank God hes out there.” Wilhelmsen held off the Tigers in the eighth inning, and Seattle went on to a 7-4 victory over Detroit on Tuesday night. Alex Liddi had a career-high three hits, including a solo homer, and the Mariners snapped a four-game losing streak. Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered for the Tigers, but it wasnt enough to overcome an early 4-0 deficit. Michael Saunders drove in three runs for Seattle. Jason Vargas (3-1) pitched six innings for the Mariners, allowing four runs and six hits. He struck out four and walked one. Three relievers finished, with Brandon League pitching a hitless ninth for his sixth save. Max Scherzer (1-2) allowed five runs and 10 hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked two. Liddis homer—his first of the season—made it 6-4 in the seventh. The Italian-born third baseman made his debut last September and had only one two-hit game before Tuesday. He singled in the first and fifth before his home run. “Our team did a pretty good job putting pressure on the pitcher,” Liddi said. “Every inning, we had somebody on base, so it was a really good game for us.” The Mariners still led by two when Suzuki made a jumping catch on Youngs flyball with two on in the eighth. Cabrera went to third on that out, but Jhonny Peralta then struck out looking on a breaking ball. After a passed ball allowed Prince Fielder to move to second as the tying run, Wilhelmsen struck out Avila to end the inning. “One of the reasons hes in the back side of our bullpen is because theres a lot of toughness there,” Seattlle manager Eric Wedge said. Robbie Gould Elite Jersey. “Hes a tough cookie out there. He competes. Hes a fighter.” Scherzer, who has been erratic so far this season, struggled through a 25-pitch first inning, allowing an RBI single by Jesus Montero to open the scoring. The right-hander appeared to steady himself, fanning Saunders to end the inning and striking out the side in the second, but the Mariners scored three in the third. Kyle Seager drove in a run with a single, and Saunders added a two-run double. “His stuff was unbelievable, he just couldnt control it,” Avila said. “Thats what we need to do—get him to a point where hes got this stuff and gets into a groove. Weve seen what he can do when he pitches like that.” Detroits Brennan Boesch hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third, and Avila made it 4-3 with a two-run homer the following inning—a 432-foot shot into the shrubbery over the wall just to the right of dead centre field. Fielder was on base for that home run after hitting an infield single. His comebacker bounced off Vargas and toward the line between home and third, and the big Detroit slugger hustled down to first. But the Tigers could never pull even. Miguel Olivo hit a run-scoring groundball in the fifth for Seattle before Cabrera answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning. Then Liddi restored a two-run advantage. Saunders hit an RBI double in the ninth. NOTES: Detroit RHP Al Alburquerque (right elbow surgery) was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day DL. ...
