Its been four years since the Canadians and Russians skated against each other in the finals of the World Junior Hockey Championship, and tonight the two rival hockey nations will take to the ice with gold medal honours on the line. Rob Gronkowski Elite Jersey . Watch the game live at 7pm et/4pm pt on TSN, TSN.ca and TSN Mobile. Team Canada will be looking for its sixth gold medal in the last seven years after falling to the U.S. in last years tournament. For Team Russia, a victory would give them their third World Junior title since 2002. It would also help them avoid another runner-up finish to the Canadians; Russia finished second to Canada three years in a row from 2005 to 2007. The Canucks earned a 6-3 win over the Russians on Boxing Day, this years tournament-opener for both teams. Since then, the Canadians only blemish came in a 6-5 shootout loss to Sweden in the final game of the preliminary round. Canadas most recent win over the U.S in the semifinals was arguably their best performance of the tournament. Head coach Dave Cameron had his players ready and his team was able to dictate the pace of the game to the Americans, en route to a 4-1 victory. “Playing the Americans we knew that we would have to have a good start against a team like that,” said forward Ryan Johansen. “We knew that it was do-or-die, so we made sure that we prepared as best as possible. I think we did a good job of that and we have to have the same type of start against the Russians.” After starting 0-2 with losses to Canada and Sweden, the Russians answered by pounding Norway and the Czech Republic by a combined score of 16-5. They followed that up with a 4-3 comeback win in overtime against Finland in the quarterfinals. The Russians are also coming off their most spirited effort so far, overcoming a talented Swedish team 4-3 in a semifinal shootout. “From what Ive heard and seen, theyve been improving every game and Im sure this is going to be a much different game than the (first) one,” stated Johansen. The Canadians are hoping they can finish the tournament off with a bookend victory on Wednesday night, but they know it will not come easy. “The Russians are playing great hockey right now,” said defenceman Tyson Barrie. “Theyve had two big comeback wins and Im sure theyve got lots of momentum going in to this one. Im sure its going to be a great game and well need to be on top of our game to get this one.” The Russians will be shooting at a new netminder, as Mark Visentin has since taken over starting duties from Olivier Roy. The change in net came after Canadas only loss of the tournament, but the move has proved to be a solid one thus far as Visentin has stopped 43 of 45 shots on goal in their quarter-final and semifinals wins. “Its going to be a really tough game, but Im confident in the way my forwards and [defence] play in front of me,” said Visentin. The Russians will also have a new face between the pipes after Dmitri Shikin took over for Igor Bobkov following Russias Boxing Day defeat to Canada. Shikin has posted a 4-1 record with a 2.47 goals against average and a .928 save percentage since getting the call. One of Shikins top priorities will be stopping forward Brayden Schenn. After all the talk that Canada was lacking the star-power it has enjoyed at previous tournaments, Schenn has stepped up not only to lead the Canadian squad in scoring, but the tournament as well with seven goals and nine assists. Schenn enters the gold medal game with a chance to break Dale McCourts Canadian record for most points in a tournament with 18 set in 1977. “For me the main goal is winning the gold medal,” said Schenn, who has seven more points than any other player in this years competition. “Id rather have a gold medal than break a record. Its all about the team and if we win a gold medal, Ill be happy with that.”———————————————————————————- TSN STATS PACK for RUS/CAN: CAN has won 5 straight vs RUS, 3 of the wins in the finals Last time CAN and RUS played twice in the same WJC was 2002, CAN 1-1 Last time 2QF teams made finals was 1999, CAN/RUS CAN is 7-5 all-time in gold medal game, RUS is 3-5 CAN-36 and RUS-27 are the two highest scoring teams in the tournament RUS started the WJC 0-2, Visentin sat on the bench for the first two games Ellis (2G, 7A) and Orlov (1G, 8A) lead all defencemen in PTS in the tournament CAN: CAN has appeared in 10 straight gold medal games CAN has the tournaments best PP 10/23,43.5% CAN was 3/5 on the PP vs RUS on Boxing Day Schenn 7G, 9A leads the tournament in PTS and Assists, T-1st in Goals (Panik) CAN has scored 4 or more goals in 18 straight WJC games Previous 9 WJ finals, CAN has not been outscored in the 1st period, they have outscored their opp. 16-6 Visentin leads the tournament in sv%, .961 RUS: RUS last appeared in gold medal game in 2007, lost to CAN RUS last won gold in 2003, defeated CAN in Nova Scotia RUSs PP is T-6th (SUI) in the tournament 6/24, 25% RUS has the tournaments 2nd worst PK 18/27, 66.7% Tarasenko (3G, 6A) and orlov (1G, 8A) are T-2nd in the tournament in PTS Six Pack? 5 Straight CAN wins vs RUS 3 Gold Medal Games 27GF 11GA (2005-2011) They Come In Threes CAN 3 straight final wins vs RUS 2005-07 RUS 3 straight final wins vs CAN 1999, 02, 03 Since this format started in 1996, Canada is 3-3 in final vs RUS (see above) Medals (since 1982) GOLD CAN-15 RUS-8 WORLD-6 SILVER CAN-6 RUS-9 WORLD-14 BRONZE CAN-3 RUS-6 WORLD-20 TOTAL MEDALS CAN-24 RUS-23 WORLD-40 (Includes Soviet Union) Finals Appearances 1996-Present CAN-12 (7-5) Last Gold 2009 RUS-8 (3-5) Last Gold 2003 Wes Welker Jersey .
