A career-threatening encounter with adversity always has a way of putting sport in perspective. Andrew Luck Womens Jersey . And that was the case for Canadian tennis player Aleksandra Wozniak at the London 2012 Olympic Games on Tuesday, who was defeated handedly by American Venus Williams 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. Wozniak, who was participating in her first Olympic Games, had her tennis career threatened by a recurring bout of forearm tendonitis she suffered in 2010 and 2011. “I was really happy to be a part of this and represent my country at the Olympics. After all the journey Ive been through I could have easily quit tennis after my serious injury and all the obstacles that have come my way,” she said after her match on Tuesday. “I had to find myself the will to keep persevering and come back strong. Its been an unbelievable journey for me and amazing that Im back here with the best to have these opportunities in my life.” Williams dominated in every facet of the game, overpowering Wozniak with the serve and keeping her off balance all match, which took 63 minutes to complete. Wozniak has faced Williams on one other occasion, losing in three sets at the Sony Ericsson Open in March. London 2012 is also a comeback tournament for Williams, who has dealt with her own adversity over the last several years. Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has had her career derailed by various injuries and was diagnosed with Sjogrens syndrome, an auto-immune disease that causes fatigue and inflammation of the joints, in 2011. But it finally looks like Williams is close to rediscovering her once dominant form. “Venus (Williams) played amazingly well. She was really in her zone today,” Wozniak said of her opponent. “She played so hard and heavy; it was really tough to play my game. We had some really fast, powerful exchanges, but she was on top of her game. Grass really suits her. She played amazingly. “My arm was on fire returning her serves, they were so huge. We had such a tough match last time and a battle that she came from the very first point in her bubble.” Wozniak won her Olympic debut against New Zealands Marina Erakovic on Monday 6-2, 6-1, but the experience of Williams, a three-time Olympic medallist, bled through – a trend the Laval, Que., native expects to continue at London 2012. “It feels like its really her tournament, shes unbeatable here,” she said. “The way she played (Tuesday) I dont think she could have played better. You could really sense that the Centre Court is hers, even though theres the other top players, she handles it so well. It was incredible to see.” Wozniak will spend the rest of her time in London as a spectator, having been eliminated from the doubles tournament in the first round on Day 1.Williams, who is unseeded at London 2012, will face third seed Angelique Kerber of Germany in the third round. In the final round, and only for a few seconds each time, did the fighters leave their feet and neither man was left bleeding.Quebec Capitales right-hander Karl Gelinas was just too much for the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday night. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder from Laval, Que., a former draft pick of the L.A. Angels who made it all the way to Triple-A in 2006, allowed only two runs on five hits over nine complete innings as Quebec beat Winnipeg 6-2 in front of 6,631 spectators at Shaw Park. It was the first game ever played between these two Canadian-based teams. “You have to give credit where credit is due,” said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. “Karl Gelinas was way better than we were tonight. Good pitching will beat good hitting at this level just about every time and Karl Gelinas was successful tonight.” The loss hurt the Goldeyes as Fargo-Moorhead beat Sioux Falls 11-8 on Tuesday night and that means the 37-25 Goldeyes are now two games back of the RedHawks in the race for first in the American Associations North Division. After Quebec scored four three times off Privett in the second inning – due in no small way to an error by Goldeyes shortstop Jose Duran that resulted in three unearned rruns—the Fish battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Chris Roberson doubled, Yurendell de Caster doubled home Roberson and then de Caster scored on a wild pitch by Gelinas. Quebec added a run in the fifth and then got a solo homer from Rony Rodriguez in the eighth. “But that three-run error really changed the game,” said Forney. “If Jose makes that play, its 2-2 and Karl probably doesnt go nine innings.” Privett (4-4, 3.61 ERA) suffered the loss for the Goldeyes while Gelinas (7-3, 1.96 ERA) earned the victory for the visitors. The same two teams will go at it Wednesday night at Shaw Park. John Mariotti (8-1, 4.56 ERA) will get the start for Quebec while Ace Walker (5-2, 2.89 ERA) will toe the slab for Winnipeg. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play. It can also be seen on Shaw TV Channel 9 in Winnipeg and Channel 11 in The Pas, Flin Flon and The Pas. Scott Taylor provides the play-by-play with Shawn Coates and host Mitchell Clinton. ’ ’ ’
