NASHILLE, Tenn. Vick Ballard Jersey . —The Tennessee Titans
still have yet to decide whether Matt Hasselbeck or Jake Locker starts in their
third preseason game, and coach Mike Munchak says he could go all the way up to
opening week before picking his starting quarterback for the season. “We have
done that before, but I dont necessarily think we will do that,” Munchak said
Sunday. Hasselbeck and Locker split work yet again with the first-team offence,
rotating between drills Sunday in the final open practice of training camp for
Tennessee (No. 21 in the AP Pro 32). Munchak said he will meet with his
assistant coaches Sunday night and make a decision on a starter. Asked if the
decision will be on the starter for Thursday nights exhibition against Arizona
or for the season, Munchak had a short answer. “We will talk about that
tomorrow,” Munchak said. Locker was just 4 of 11 for 21 yards in his first NFL
start Friday night, a 30-7 win at Tampa Bay. Hasselbeck, who was intercepted
twice in the preseason opener, was 4 of 5 for 29 yards. On Sunday, both had
their moments with Hasselbeck picked off in a two-minute drill, while Locker
completed 1 of 5 passes. But Hasselbeck had some nice throws to tight ends
Jared Cook and Craig Stevens into the end zone on another drill, while Locker
made a nice pass to Cook down the right sideline. Munchak said repetitions
always help, though they saw Hasselbeck throw for more than 3,500 yards in 2011
with Locker impressive each time he came off the bench as a rookie. “You have
ideas on what you think is best, but ultimately you want to let things play out
as long as you can and make the best decision for the team,” Munchak said.
Neither Hasselbeck nor Locker spoke with reporters Sunday. Cook said the wait to
pick a starting quarterback is not causing problems in the locker room and sees
no pressure to rush a decision. “Its good that they kind of push each other.
They know that someones right on their shoulder. Watch out. Competitions good,”
Cook said. “Youve got a guy you invested in the future in in Jake and you also
have a guy whos a crafty veteran who knows the game period in Matt. Its not an
easy decision, and weve only played two games. You really cant decide a lot in
two games.” Quarterback isnt the only position battle going on for the Titans
right now, but it easily is the most watched in the first real competition for
this team at that spot in years. The Titans open Sept. 9 against New England,
and coaches will have to decide how many defensive linemen to keep, defensive
backs, receivers and linebackers. “This is just one of many that, hopefully, we
will get right,” Munchak said of picking a starting quarterback. Receiver will
be a challenge while receiver Kenny Britt waits to hear from NFL commissioner
Roger Goodell on whether or not his eighth incident involving police merits a
suspension and how many games. Munchak said Britt may not play this preseason as
he recovers from a third surgery, on his left knee in late June, and the Titans
are preparing for the worst. Britt said he has not heard from the commissioner
and is hoping for the best. He said he is working hard in the film room and in
the training room to be ready once he is cleared off the physically unable to
perform list. He surprised himself by running several passing routes hard
recently. “Im real excited,” Britt said. Notes: S Jordan Babineaux did not
practice and said he might not play Thursday night against the Cardinals. He
said his right shoulder, which he hurt while in Seattle in 2005 and 2006, is

Championship. The reason? Woods, who shared the lead through two rounds, said he
tried a different tactic, to relax and have fun. “I was just trying to be, you
know, a little bit happy out there and enjoy it,” Woods said. “Unfortunately,
thats not how I play.” Happy Tiger missed a short birdie putt on No. 3 on
Saturday, then made bogeys on three of his next four holes. Woods faced a
7-footer for par on No. 8 when heavy rain delayed things until Sunday morning.
He missed the putt for another bogey to fall six shots behind eventual champion
Rory McIlroy. It was the latest example of Woods playing well early in majors,
then watching things go sideways on the weekend. Woods wouldnt say why he
changed, only that he wont do it again. “I was trying to enjoy the process,”
Woods said. “But thats not how I play. I play full systems go, all out, intense,
and thats how I won 14 of these things.” Woods, though, has gone four years
without winning any majors, a drought hed hoped to end at the PGA Championship.
Instead, McIlroy blew away the field with an eight-stroke victory. The
23-year-old from Northern Ireland played 13 shots better than Woods over the
weekend. And Woods knows the prospect is there for McIlroy to challenge for even
more majors in years to come. “Hes very good. We all know the talent he has,”
Woods said. McIlroy went through a dry spell this year, Woods said, that all
great players go through on the way to bigger things. Woods believes hes in the
middle of one right now and says he keeps coming close, hell break through again
soon. “The thing is, to keep putting myself there,” he said. “Im not going to
win them all and I havent won them all.” Woods shot a final round 72 after
completing his third-round 74. Woods says hes on the right track, though. He
came out fiery and intense on Sunday and felt more like his old self. He had
only three bogeys on his final 228 holes and finished at 286, tied for 11th and

focused and nothing else matters,” Woods said. “I got back to that today and I
hit some really good shots and I played the way that I know I can play.” Woods

Sunday at the PGA Championship wasnt Woods day. It began at 7:45 a.m. with his
missed par putt to drop further behind. He let his driver go after a bad shot on
the 15th hole into some cactus like stickers right of the fairway. Woods got
stuck by several of them and limped his way back to the fairway before picking
them off his shoes and slacks. “It got in both legs—well, left shoe, right
shoe, and then in my right leg,” he said. “It itched like hell for about a hole,
and it was fine.” Woods entered the final round five shots behind McIlroy and
never made a charge. Then again, McIlroy played like a man who wouldnt be caught
by anyone. McIlroy won his second major in runaway fashion—he captured the
2011 U.S. Open by eight shots—and then brushed aside the inevitable
comparisons to the start of Woods career. “Ive won my second major at the same
age as he had,” McIlroy said of Woods. “But he went on that incredible run like
2000, 2001, 2002 and won so many. You know, Id love to sit up here and tell you
that Im going to do the same thing, but I just dont know.” Woods isnt worried
about who golfs next great star is, just about what tournaments next after this
one. “Weve got a lot of golf to be played the rest of the year, some big events
coming up and the Ryder Cup at the end of it,” Woods said. “So looking forward
