As Andy Fantuz was greeted by both cheers and boos in his return to Regina – in a game the former Most Outstanding Canadian and his Hamilton Tiger-Cats ended up winning – we were reminded again that this past off-season was full of change with several star players changing addresses. Michael Crabtree Jersey . Fantuz was amongst a surprisingly large group of high profile CFLers switching teams this off-season, either via trade or free agency. And, just like every other year, some off-season moves pay bigger dividends than others. Its time to give out some admittedly early grades on the big off-season acquisitions. Theres plenty of time for minds to be changed on players, but after five games of the 2012 season The Rouge looks at which off-season pickups have had the biggest early impacts for their new teams. No doubt, the biggest acquisition ahead of the season was Ricky Ray, who was added by the Toronto Argonauts after finishing last in the East. Ray has been solid so far but the most important stat is the Argos record – 3-2. Under Ray, the Argos are tied atop the East Division – and the league – in the standings and unlike last year, they have a chance to compete for the 100th Grey Cup later this year in Toronto. While Rays stats are good, the Southern Ontarios other new quarterback Henry Burris has been great. Burris, acquired from Calgary via trade, has been outstanding for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats during their recent three-game win streak. Burris has thrown a league-leading 15 touchdown passes compared to just three interceptions. Initial impressions suggest the Ticats may have gone 2-2 with their big off-season splashes. Fantuz is second on the team in both receptions (23) and receiving yards (337) and has two touchdowns through five games. Burris and Ray were the headliners in their respective trades, but the returning pieces have been key early this season as well. Drew Tate entered the season as Calgarys clear cut QB1, but the Stampeders were wise to secure a veteran like Kevin Glenn for worst-case scenarios. Now, Tate is likely out for the year and Glenn, pressed into action, is keeping the teams playoff and Grey Cup hopes alive. And while Steven Jyles has certainly struggled with consistency issues, he is the pivot of a 3-2 team tied for first in the West. A number of new Saskatchewan Roughriders have helped the team jump out to a 3-2 start to varying levels including offensive linemen Dominic Picard and Brendan LaBatte and defensive end Odell Willis, who has one sack early this season. For one day, Indiana can wait. Having Thursday off from practice is Miamis first playoff prize, and although a five-game win over the Knicks might have seemed easy, the reigning Eastern Conference champions insisted afterward that it was more grinding than it appeared. Locked out of their jobs since early Sunday morning, the annual gear-up to training camp across North America has instead been replaced with more of the same, a frustrating and seemingly endless batch of off-season training. Ribery was asked Thursday to respond to a quip from Michel Platini who, the day before, was asked to rate Frances chances at the European Championship. The UEFA president responded, somewhat sarcastically, that the French can do well providing “they get down off the bus.” Platini was referring to Frances infamous training ground strike at the2010 World Cup, which shocked and embarrassed a nation, and where Ribery was handed a three-match ban for his perceived role as one of the strike ringleaders. Only recently has the French public started warming to Ribery again, and he no longer wants to reflect on that dark chapter. Riberys fall from grace was spectacular, and perhaps unprecedented, such was his level of popularity from the time he broke into the French team at the 2006 World Cup until he was embroiled in a prostitution scandal—two months before the last World Cup—and then after the strike that dragged French football to its lowest ever ebb. When he returned to play for France at home to Croatia last year, even though his ban was served, the French fans were merciless and jeered him relentlessly. The French media questioned his form, while politicians called for him to be dropped. Only Laurent Blanc really stuck by him as his goal drought continued and his Bayern Munich form kept on eluding him when playing for France. “Blanc always believed in me. Blanc and (assistant coach) Jean-Louis Gasset came to Munich to speak to me, which is something huge,” Ribery said. Deion Sanders 49ers Jersey. “There was a time when people were talking only about me, there was a lot of heavy criticism. They told me to get my confidence back.” But even Blanc was running out of patience, until Ribery finally found his form again in blue shirt of France, scoring excellent goals in each of the three Euro 2012 warmup matches as France beat Iceland 3-2, Serbia 2-0 and Estonia 4-0. “I had been waiting for this goal, and it felt so good to score,” Ribery said Thursday, referring to his goal against Iceland last month, which ended a scoring drought of more than three years for France. More importantly, for him at least, the crowd started to get back on his side. So much so that, when he scored against Estonia to cap his excellent performance on Thursday night, the crowd in Le Mans rose to their feet to give him an ovation when he was substituted late on. For the first time in what must have seemed like an eternity to him, chants of “Ribery, Ribery” could be heard. “It was great to see how the fans treated me. It gave me a lot of confidence,” Ribery said. “Everyone needs the backing of their fans, and I had lost that for a while in the French team. Now its exactly the same with the French team as it is with Bayern.” Now 29 years old, Ribery finally has a chance to put the past behind him once and for all, and star for France again—just like he did at the World Cup six years ago. ’ ’ ’
