either at RF or DH. – Cubs C Geovany Soto may already be the best catcher in
baseball. After hitting .389 in 18 games last season, Soto entered this year
with high expectations and hes more than surpassed those hopes. In 29 games,
hes belted 13 doubles, six homers and 24 RBI with a .352 batting average. With
Clevelands Victor Martinez and Minnesotas Joe Mauer still homerless, Atlantas
Brian McCann and L.A.s Russell Martin are Sotos top competitors at the position
right now. – White Sox RHP Javier Vazquez was a hard-luck loser to Toronto (8 H,
1 ER, 9 K in 7 2/3 IP) because Blue Jays RHP Dustin McGowan was awesome (4 H, 6
K in 7 IP). McGowan has allowed more than two earned runs just twice in seven
starts this season and its starting to look more and more like McGowan is the
Jays number two. – Diamondbacks RHP Max Scherzer was brought back to earth
somewhat (7 H, 2 BB, 5 R, 2 ER, 5 K in 4 IP), losing to the Phillies in his
first major league start. – Red Sox RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed only two hits
and one earned run in five innings against the Tigers, but he also walked eight,
throwing 109 pitches. The control needs to be better, but its hard to argue
with 5-0 and a 2.43 ERA. – Reds RHP Johnny Cueto is back on the horse with a win
against the Cubs (6 H, 2 BB, 3 ER, 8 K in 6 IP). – Angels RHP Ervin Santana
continued his awesome start to the season, striking out nine in a complete-game,
four-hit shutout at Kansas City. That Santana is having success on the road,
after his 8.38 road ERA in 2007, is a good sign of maturity from the
25-year-old. – Santanas success left Royals RHP Brett Tomko to a tough fate. He
didnt lose, but Tomko might have expected better after going seven shutout
innings and allowing just two hits and two walks. – Rockies C Chris Iannetta is
pushing Yorvit Torrealba for playing time, by hitting .349 in 43 at-bats. –
Orioles LHP Garrett Olson had another strong start (4 H, 1 BB, 1 ER, 7 K in 6
1/3 IP) but lost out to As LHP Dana Eveland (3 H, 4 BB in 7 IP). Both guys are
decent options to fill out your pitching staff in deep leagues. – Rangers 1B
Chris Shelton is getting another shot in the bigs, but hes 1-for-15 (.067) so
