CHICAGO —For the first time in more than three weeks, the Chicago White Sox
have company atop the AL Central. Dashon Goldson Jersey . The White Sox gave
Detroit an opening to tie for the division lead when Gordon Beckham hit into a
game-ending forceout with the potential tying run on second base Tuesday in a
4-3 loss to the last-place Cleveland Indians. “We knew it wasnt going to be
easy,” catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. “(Detroit is) not going to go away. Theyll
keep playing hard.” Hours later, Anibal Sanchez pitched a three-hitter for the
Tigers in a 2-0 victory over Kansas City that left both Detroit and Chicago at
82-72 with eight games to go. Chicago had been alone in first place since Sept.
3. The White Sox have lost six of seven and have had trouble scoring without the
long ball of late. Three solo homers were all the offence Chicago mustered
Tuesday. Down 4-0, the White Sox rallied when Pierzynski and Dayan Viciedo hit
consecutive fifth-inning home runs off Corey Kluber (2-4) and then pulled within
a run when Paul Konerko homered off Chris Perez leading off the ninth. “Its just
going to take some hits together that dont go over the fence,” Beckham said. “If
you string hits together, you usually score runs. It happens that a lot of ours
go over the fence.” Perez walked a pair of batters with two outs, and Beckham
grounded to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who threw to second baseman Jason Kipnis
for the force. “Every day theres close games,” Konerko said. “Today was
obviously not a step in the right direction. It was a tough game. We showed some
heart to battle back. At this point of the season, you need the victories.”
After Wednesday nights series finale, the White Sox host a four-game series
against Tampa Bay and then close with three games in Cleveland. Detroit finishes
its four-game series against Kansas City on Thursday, then winds up with a pair
of three-game series at Minnesota and the Royals. Francisco Liriano (6-12)
allowed all four runs and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings. He is 1-2 with a 6.30 ERA
in his past seven appearances. Kluber (2-4) gave up four hits in seven innings,
retiring nine of his last 10 batters. Vinnie Pestano and Perez completed the
six-hitter, with Perez gaining his 37th save in 41 chances. “He grew a little as
a pitcher today,” Indians manager Manny Acta said of Kluber. “That was a
well-pitched ballgame, a crucial situation for (the White Sox).” Russ Canzler
had three hits and homered for the second straight game, putting Cleveland ahead
in the second inning. Canzler doubled between a pair of walks as the Indians
loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, and Thomas Neal barely beat out a
potential double-play grounder as Carlos Santana scored. Upset by first base
umpire Jerry Laynes call, Pierzynski jumped up and down at home plate.
Ezequiel Carrera and Shin-Soo Choo followed with consecutive RBI singles that
chased Liriano. Notes: Pierzynski has a career-best 27 homers. Only Carlton Fisk
has more homers in a season by a White Sox catcher, with 37 in 1985. ... Chicago
has hit back-to-back homers 10 times this year. ... The teams are a combined 2
for 8 in steal attempts this series. ... White Sox manager Robin Ventura
shuffled his rotation, giving starter Jake Peavy an extra day of rest. Peavy
will pitch the series opener against the Rays on Thursday, and lefty
Hector Santiago (3-1, 3.45 ERA) was plugged in for the series finale against
Cleveland on Wednesday. The Indians start RHP Justin Masterson (11-15, 4.97).
... Ventura said LHP Chris Sale was going to get an extra day of rest prior to
the game, but the team announced after the game that he would pitch Saturday on
regular rest. ... Cleveland RHP Roberto Hernandez (sprained right ankle) will
throw three innings in a simulated game Wednesday. Acta said Hernandez will
possibly throw one more simulated game after that and be done for the season. Roger Craig Womens Jersey .A. Dickey angrily
threw the resin bag and came off the mound. Vernon Davis Womens Jersey . Ian Thorpes
comeback from retirement has been so closely scrutinized Down Under that hes had
to prepare in Europe. http://www.fans49ersstore.com/michael-crabtree-jersey
. Jose Reyes blooped a two-out RBI single in front of a diving Heyward in right
field in the 10th inning Tuesday night, and the Miami Marlins overcame an awful
ninth inning to snap the Braves four-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory. NaVorro Bowman Super bowl Jersey . His
professional baseball career is just beginning. The Chicago White Sox agreed to
terms on Monday with the 18-year-old outfielder, 13th overall pick in this years
draft. Colin Kaepernick Grey Jersey . —The seed
was planted in Drew Doughtys mind long before he got this close to the
summit. Were in the swing of things now with the NBA playoffs as the storylines
evolve on a daily basis. Enjoying the quality and intensity of the games. 1.
PAUL PIERCE (Celtics): What a Game 2 performance at Atlanta. No Rajon Rondo and
Ray Allen and the Cs find a way to pull it off. The team perimeter defence was
outstanding and Pierce was brilliant. I always go back to what Celtics legend
Tommy Heinsohn told me years ago about Pierce; he said that Pierce would go down
as one of the all-time great Celtics and this was before Pierce had the Big
Three and they had a lousy team that he was trying to keep competitive each
night. Tommy was right on the money. Hes going to end up in the Hall of Fame
someday and Tuesday night, he was great. When the chips were down and his team
needed big plays on the road, he delivered. Its one thng to do it at home,
another to do it on the road without two of your best teammates to play with.
The great ones find a way to elevate to the moment; he did it! 2. LARRY BROWN
(SMU): At 71-years-old, hes back at it again. The former NBA coach is now
coaching in Dallas at a program entering The Big East Conference. Kind of like
basketballs version of former football lifer Lou Saban, who bounced from place
to place and couldnt get enough of it. Ive always respected Browns coaching
ability and his way of turning lousy situations around at the NBA and NCAA
level. The Charlotte Bobcats messed up letting him go. I hope that Brown finds
some peace and pleasure as he winds down his career. Not sure if hell get
another shot in the NBA but if he wants to keep coaching, good for him. Go for
it. 3. GLEN DAVIS (Magic): Love the passion/toughness he plays with. Hes brought
his level of focus to another level in the absence of Dwight Howard. A proud man
with fierce competitive spirit, its nice to see a guy lay it all on the line on
every play. Sometimes his emotions get the best of him but youd rather that than
a guy who tries to act cool and smooth. Hes an undersized power forward who
struggles at times against length finishing at the rim but he doesnt cheat you,
thats for sure. With the Indy series knotted at 1-1, he must play at a high
level in order to attract attention inside to allow Jameer Nelson, JJ Redick,
Ryan Anderson, Jason Richardson and Hedoo Turkoglu to create their draw and kick
game on the perimeter to get open 3s and clear path drives to the rim with the
defence being stretched out. Patrick Willis Super bowl Jersey. 4.
REGGIE EVANS (Clippers): The former Raptor did a nice job in Game 1 with his
perimeter defence on the screen and roll. His mobility helped with the defence
of Marc Gasol and Marreese Speights on the back end of screen/roll sequences
where they like to pop out instead of roll to the hoop. You need a guy who will
get out and guard with energy and prevent open face-up looks from the opposing
bigs who want to open the floor up on you. His energy level and grit is
contagious and, with DeAndre Jordan struggling with that aspect of the coverages
in Game 1, Evans came up big. Yes, hes limited offensively and hes an adventure
at the free-throw line but you gotta love his willingness to mix it up and give
your second unit some personality. 5. MICHAEL MALONE (Warriors): If I was a
president/GM of an NBA team, heres the name Id make sure I had on my short list
for a potential head coach. Ive known him for over 20 years and think the world
of him as a person. More importantly, this guy is a sharp basketball man who is
more than ready to run his own team. Has paid his dues in the profession at the
NCAA Level as an assistant at Providence, Virginia and Manhattan. Has been in
the NBA for a good while as an assistant with New York, Cleveland, New Orleans
and currently just finished his first season with Golden State. A little
Canadian connection, his Dad (Magic assistant Brendan Malone) was the first head
coach of the Toronto Raptors in 1995 and Mike Malone served as an assistant for
the Canadian National Team for a few summers for Leo Rautins. I think hes got it
and strongly believe that for those teams that will have openings this
off-season, hed be a great get. Obviously, some teams go for the experience and
look to hire guys whove been successful head coaches. Understood but if you go
down the path of bringing in an assistant coach, in my opinion, hes excellent.
Ive been a coach and been around coaches my whole career and certain guys jump
out at you; hes one of them. Sooner or later, certain teams will wake up and
stop hiring retreads and look for fresh blood with passion, smarts and
leadership ability. ’ ’ ’
