Canadian Damian Warner has set three personal bests during the first day of the

five sports of the decathlon, Warner has 4386 points, trailing USAs Ashton Eaton

reigning world-record holder, Eaton, sits atop the standings, setting the best
times of the field in the 100m and 400m and the longest jump. “I feel good and
my body feels good. I had a good start to the 100m,” Eaton, 24, said. “Its good
that both of us are on top, thats where we want to be.” Eaton surpassed Hardee,
28, as the U.S. gold medal favourite in the decathlon after beating him handidly
with a world-record performance in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. in
June. Hardee is a two-time world champion (2011, 2009) – beating Eaton in the
ten event competition both times. However, in the last world championship,
Hardee ruptured an elbow ligament, requiring Tommy John surgery nine months ago.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Czech Republics Roman Sebrle, 37, pulled out of
the event due to injury. Sebrle is a former gold and silver medallist from
Athens 2004 and Syndey 2000 respectively. Eaton surpassed Sebrles world record

Dashon Goldson on Friday, giving them the right to match any offer Goldson
receives from elsewhere. The move by the NFC West champions makes sure the team
is compensated if Goldson—who had been set to become an unrestricted free
agent March 13—signs with another franchise. “There are no immediate plans to
sign the franchise tag,” Goldsons representative, Ben Dogra of CAA Sports, said
in a text message. “We will continue to speak with the 49ers.” General manager
Trent Baalke said the team can still attempt to sign Goldson to a long-term deal
but at least knows he is expected to be with the Niners again in 2012. “Dashon
has been a 49er since we selected him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft,”
Baalke said. “By using the franchise tag on Dashon, it affords us the
opportunity to continue to work on a long-term contract with him, while also
ensuring he will be a 49er for a sixth season, in 2012.” Baalke also is busy
working to re-sign quarterback Alex Smith, whoo helped San Francisco snap an

five highest paid players at his position each year, over the last five seasons.
