LOS ANGELES —Less than 24 hours after a game was literally stolen from them in the ninth inning, the Los Angeles Dodgers gave one away to the San Diego Padres with some costly errors that were converted into six unearned runs. Ray Lewis Pink Jersey . Cameron Maybin and Everth Cabrera scored the tying and go-ahead runs on third baseman Jerry Hairston Jr.s second throwing error of the seventh inning, Chase Headley homered for the second straight game, and the Padres beat the Dodgers 7-2 on Sunday in the rubber game of the three-game series. “We did take advantage of a few things, which was good to see, but we also had some good at-bats,” manager Bud Black said. “A couple of big hits got us started, and then we capitalized on a couple of their mistakes and we kept adding on.” Jason Marquis (2-5) allowed two runs and six hits over six innings before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter during the Padres pivotal three-run rally. The 33-year-old right-hander was making his eighth start since joining San Diego on May 29, the day after the Minnesota Twins granted him free agency. “Marquis did a great job,” Black said. “He was under the weather, battling stomach flu, and he didnt sleep well last night. But he really gutted it out on a day that he wasnt a hundred per cent, physically. He stayed down in the tunnel between innings to cool off, but he hung in there.” Marquis was 0-4 with a 4.60 ERA in his previous five outings since June 13, when he threw 6 1-3 scoreless innings for the Padres in a 1-0 interleague victory at Seattle. “I just tried to battle and conserve as much energy as possible so Id have it when I needed it,” Marquis said. “After sitting between innings, to get going again was the toughest part. I just tried to stick to the game plan, pound the bottom of the strike zone and get ahead.” Chris Capuano (9-5) was charged with four runs—all unearned—and five hits in 7 2-3 innings after the Dodgers infield committed four errors behind him— all on poor throws. The left-hander, pitching on six days rest because of the All-Star break, was bumped up a day in the rotation after Chad Billingsley was scratched with elbow soreness. “I found out last night after the game. But if there was any time during the season that this was going to happen, this is the perfect time, because I was well-rested and ready to go,” Capuano said. “I wasnt perfect with my execution, but I felt like I made a pretty high percentage of my pitches.” Hairstons RBI single in the sixth gave Capuano a 2-1 lead, and he retired the first two batters in the seventh before Hairston gave the Padres life with his first error on a grounder by Maybin. Cabrera followed with a single, and a walk to John Baker loaded the bases. Yasmani Grandal batted for Marquis, and Hairston backhanded his grounder down the line before his hurried throw sailed past first baseman James Loney as two runs scored. “You hate to see that compound into costing your team the game. But it did,” Hairston said. “Obviously I would have liked to get a better grip on the ball after popping back up on those plays. But playing third with those guys running down the line, sometimes you dont have that luxury. So youve just got to let it go and hope for the best. “They dont call it the hot corner for nothing.” Josh Lindblom relieved Capuano after Hairstons second miscue, and Chris Denorfia singled home another run to give the Padres a 4-2 lead. Headley added his 10th homer leading off the eighth against Lindblom. Andre Ethier gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead against Marquis with a run-scoring single in the first. It increased his team-high RBI total to 60 in 78 games—just two fewer than he had in 135 games last season, when he missed the final 20 contests because of a knee injury that required surgery. The Padres tied it in the fourth with another unearned run after Logan Forsythe and Headley opened the inning with singles. Carlos Quentin followed with a fielders choice grounder to shortstop, but second baseman Mark Ellis threw wildly past first trying to complete a double play and Forsythe was able to score. Reliever Jamey Wright committed the Dodgers season-high fifth error of the game when he mishandled Alexi Amaristas sacrifice bunt in the eighth. Mark Kotsay, who led off the inning with a double, scored on Quentins sacrifice fly and Yonder Alonso followed with an RBI single. Both of those runs also were unearned. Unfortunately, a late-game collapse cost the Reds once again. Substitute Oriol Rosell scored his first goal in Major League Soccer in the 88th minute, leading Sporting Kansas City to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday. The loss dropped Toronto FC to 5-16-6, stretched its current winless streak to seven games and solidified its spot in the cellar of the Eastern Conference. “Its a long-playing record,” said Toronto defender Richard Eckersley, who headed several KC crosses out of the Toronto penalty area and assisted on Ryan Johnsons goal in the 44th minute. “Its the same old story every week.” Indeed, it marked the fifth time in the last eight games Toronto, which is missing seven regulars from its lineup because of injuries, has allowed a goal after the 80th minute. Rosells late goal ruined what otherwise was a hard-fought effort in which Toronto effectively hunkered down on defence and waited for counterattack opportunities. “Because of all of the injuries, we had to come in here and play a certain way,” said Toronto coach Paul Mariner. “We set in and waited to break. We were in a great spot. Im just heartbroken for the players. They put a great effort in.” Despite spending most of the first half on its heels defensively, Toronto FC entered halftime with a lead. Some dogged defence by Eckersley, Darren ODea and Jeremy Hall in the box kept Sporting from finishing its numerous chances. Goalkeeper Freddy Hall was required to make just two routine saves, one off a meek shot by Sportings C.J. Sapong in the 22nd minute and a second on a wild shot from Roger Espinoza outside the box in the 41st minute. Torontos only scoring chance prior to scoring ccame in the 35th minute, when Andrew Wiedeman broke free behind the KC defence, but keeper Jimmy Nielsen beat him to the ball for the save. Torrey Smith Youth Jersey. But with a minute left in the half, Toronto finally got the break it needed. Eckersley found Johnson unmarked on the left side, just outside the KC penalty area. Johnson took one dribble toward goal and slid a shot low that beat Nielsen to his left and found the right corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season. It was Torontos only shot of the half. “I knew he was peeling off his man, so I just played the ball back to him,” Eckersley said. Johnson nearly handed Toronto a two-goal lead in the opening minutes of the second half when he took a ball just outside the Sporting area and fired a shot off the right post. Instead, Sporting KC earned the equalizer in the 60th minute following an unfortunate foul and yellow card by Toronto midfielder Terry Dunfield on Graham Zusi just outside the box. Zusis free kick was headed out, but Sporting midfielder Paulo Nagamura took the rebound with a swinging right foot that bounced the ball hard to the turf and high over Halls head into the net. “We failed to clear the line,” Mariner said. Toronto FC nearly regained the lead in the 79th minute when Luis Silva gained possession of a cross at the top of the KC six-yard box. Silva got off a hard shot, but Nielsen made a nice diving save. That set up Rosells game-winner nine minutes later. Myers, who had been dangerous on the right side the entire game, fluttered a cross into the box that Rosell skipped past an outstretched Hall into the left corner. “Its a hard way to lose,” said Toronto defender Jeremy Hall. “We led 1-0 against a really good team at their place. Their first goal was a bad goal. The second one was just heartbreak in the 88th minute. “Yeah, it sucks.” ’ ’ ’
