CHICAGO —Considering how long it had been, its no surprise that Travis Wood was just a little relieved. Texans Jerseys . Wood pitched six strong innings for his first win as a starter in more than a year, and the Chicago Cubs beat the White Sox 2-1 on Tuesday night even though Jake Peavy again went the distance. “Get the first one, get the monkey off your back, and hopefully, you start rolling from here,” Wood said. David DeJesus drove in both runs with a single in the third inning. He led off the ninth with a triple, but Peavy struck out Steve Clevenger looking at a 2-2 pitch with runners on second and third. The Cubs handed the White Sox their sixth loss in seven games. The North Siders will try to complete the sweep Wednesday after dropping all three at Wrigley Field last month. The White Sox, meanwhile, were shaking their heads, knowing they are now second in the AL Central and a half-game behind Cleveland after clinching their fifth straight series loss. “Teams that we feel we should beat that arent playing that well, we got to show up and take advantage of these opportunities,” Peavy said. “Detroit is coming. And we know Cleveland isnt going anywhere.” Wood (1-3) was simply terrific. He has spent time in the minors this season after coming from Cincinnati in the trade for Sean Marshall, and he finally came away with his first win since a relief appearance for the Reds at Pittsburgh on Aug. 19. He hadnt won as a starter since he beat the Los Angeles Dodgers last June 15, but he finally got one after allowing one run and four hits while striking out five and walking four. “You always understand the pressures of coming to a new team, especially when you were traded for one of the best relievers in baseball,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. “You want to impress. It sure seems like hes relaxed out there, making his pitches and making pitches when he has to.” The White Sox threatened in the eighth when James Russell walked Gordon Beckham and Adam Dunn with one out. Manuel Corpas came in, and a sprinting Reed Johnson, who had just replaced Bryan LaHair in right, grabbed Paul Konerkos shallow fly before Alex Rios grounded out to end the inning. Carlos Marmol worked the ninth for his fourth save in six chances, retiring Orlando Hudson on a grounder to end the game after he walked A.J. Pierzynski. Peavy (6-3) took another tough-luck loss in his third complete game. The veteran threw 125 pitches and allowed five hits while striking out five and walking one. He retired 16 straight hitters before Tony Campana singled in the eighth, but came up short again after a 1-0 loss at St. Louis last week. The Cubs didnt get much going after setting season highs for runs, hits (15) and homers (five) in a 12-3 win on Monday, but they still squeezed this one out. The White Sox grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when right fielder LaHair took a poor route on Alexei Ramirezs ground-rule double to the corner after walks to Rios and Dayan Viciedo. Wood then walked Tyler Flowers to load the bases but retired Hudson on a pop fly and struck out Alejandro De Aza to end the inning. DeJesus came through with the two-run single after Geovany Soto reached on a wide throw by Hudson at third, Campana singled off the pitchers foot and Peavy uncorked a wild pitch to put them on second and third. That was enough on a night when Wood dominated. The Cubs also made several neat defensive plays, including one by shortstop Starlin Castro. He raced back for an over-the-shoulder catch on De Azas bloop to centre, bare-handing the ball after it popped out of his glove. “Unbelievable,” Castro said. “I dont know how.” Hudson, meanwhile, was fuming at himself for that bad throw on Sotos grounder. “I lost the game for the man (Peavy), thats it,” he said. “The man threw a hell of a game, I lost it for him. Point blank. Case closed. We lost. My bad. Thats it.” Notes: White Sox pitcher John Danks could begin a rehabilitation assignment in three or four weeks after tests confirmed he has a mild muscle strain in his left shoulder. Two MRIs on Monday showed that Danks has a mild Grade 1 strain of the subscapularis muscle in his left shoulder. There is no tendon or ligament damage and his labrum is intact. ... With Zach Stewart being optioned to Triple-A, the White Sox recalled RHP Dylan Axelrod from the minor league club. Axelrod was with the White Sox from April 27 to May 5, going 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA in three appearances, including one start. He is expected to pitch mostly in long relief. ... Cubs 3B Ian Stewart (15-day DL) received a second cortisone injection to treat a sore left wrist on Monday, this time on top of his left hand. Sveum said he doesnt think surgery is on the table right now. ... Asked if LaHair would have made the catch on Konerko in the eighth, Sveum said, “I dont think LaHair would have gotten to it.” Whitney Mercilus Jersey . And that wasnt even his hardest-hit ball Thursday night. Heyward ranked his seventh-inning homer to centre No. 1, but both counted the same, and the two solo shots helped the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 8-2 to complete a three-game series sweep. Arian Foster Jersey . Substitutes Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis put a dogged Southampton side 2-1 in front and wipe out Carlos Tevezs opener for City. But Samir Nasri spared City from an opening weekend upset by scoring an 80th-minute winner following Edin Dzekos equalizer. http://www.texansfanstore.com/chris-myers-jersey . Danny Boyle, the artistic director for the games July 27 opening ceremony, on Tuesday unveiled a model of the set, which will transform the Olympic Stadium in gritty, urban east London into a rural idyll. Glover Quin Jersey . —For one half, the Colorado Rapids appeared listless. Danieal Manning Jersey . The Toronto Raptors first-round draft pick arrived at Air Canada Centre on Friday wearing his new teams cap on his head and a smile on his face. TORONTO —The Toronto Blue Jays not only lost back-to-back games to the Tampa Bay Rays, they will likely lose third baseman Brett Lawrie to suspension. Lawries batting helmet hit an umpire during his ninth-inning outburst in the Jays 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The 22-year-old threw his helmet to the ground and it bounced up and hit home plate umpire Bill Miller on the right hip after Lawrie was called out on strikes for the second out. Lawrie was restrained from going after the umpire and was ejected, as was manager John Farrell. Lawrie admitted that his helmet “might have” hit Miller. “That was not my intention at all,” the native of Langley, B.C., said. “Ive never, ever done anything to go at an umpire in my life and I didnt mean to tonight. I apologize for that. It just kind of took an unlucky bounce and I think I got him so my apologies for that.” The umpire also was hit by a beer thrown from the stands as he left the field. “Im not going to say I havent had a dispute (with an umpire),” Lawrie said. “But Ive never thrown anything or gotten ever close to an umpire like that, or ever put an umpire in danger. Its not what Im out there to do. Its just my passion for the game and I wanted to help my teammates out as best I could.” Farrell was ejected when he continued to argue with Miller following Lawries ejection. “I felt the bat was taken completely out of Bretts hand,” Farrell said. “Not only the 3-1 pitch but the 3-2 pitch as well. Those are not strikes, evident by the reaction of obviously Brett and myself. It was a tough ballgame to lose.” Miller said he has already filed his report with MLB about the incident. “Upon seeing that he was ejected, he took several steps toward me and fired his helmet. It hit me in the right hip,” Miller said. “Thats a bit extreme,” Miller said. The victory gave the Rays a sweep of the two-game series. And for the second game in a row, the Rays took advantage of leaky Blue Jays defence. “You give them extra outs, you see what that can lead to,” Farrell said. After Sean Rodriguez led off the seventh with his third home run to cut the Blue Jays lead to 3-2, the Rays scored two more unearned runs in the inning to take the lead. The Blue Jays made four errors in the game. The Rays scored five unearned runs in a six-run fifth inning their 7-1 win on Monday. “Errors on the field are going to happen,” Farrell said. “Were well aware of the situations that are taking place on the field. But the physical things theyre going to happen and were in a little bit of a rut in terms of the physical errors that being made on the field.” David Price (6-2) pitched seven innings to improve his record to 5-0 in six career starts at Rogers Centre while Henderson Alvarez (3-3) had his three-game winning streak end as he allowed four runs (two earned) in 6 2/3 innings. Kevin Walter Jersey. Price is 11-2 in 14 career starts against the Blue Jays. It was the third loss in a row for Toronto, (19-18) which returned on Monday from a 5-5 trip. The frustration boiled over in the ninth. With one out against Fernando Rodney who picked up his 11th save, Lawrie took a 3-1 pitch and started to run to first base. Miller called it a strike. “I was just trying to get on base for my teammates and it ended up going against me,” Lawrie said. Lawrie said he was not sure if the umpire felt that he had shown him up. “Thats totally not the way the way I wanted to come across,” he said. “I just thought it was ball four and dropped my bat and started running because it was kind of a late call. I wasnt going to stand there and just wait for him to see if he made the call.” When the next pitch also was called a strike, Lawrie went into a rage and threw his helmet to the ground. “I think it was the point of the game,” Lawrie said. “You look at the point of the game, how we went out ahead and then they came back and we wanted to win that game. “I come up and tried to work the count to get on base for my teammates and hopefully get on base, move up a base and hopefully score and tie the game up and thats what I was out there to do.” When Farrell was asked if he was concerned about a suspension to Lawrie, he said: “Im sure that will be reviewed by the league.” The Blue Jays scored three runs in the third, one on a single by Jose Bautista and two on Edwin Encarnacions 12th homer of the season. Tampa Bay (23-14) scored once in the fifth when Will Rhymes led off with a single and came home on Ben Zobrists bloop two-out double to centre. After Rodriguez homered in the seventh, Rhymes singled and took second on shortstop Yunel Escobars error on a grounder by Jose Molina. Johnson singled and Rhymes came home on an error charged to left-fielder Rajai Davis. Zobrist lined a single off the glove of second baseman Kelly Johnson to load the bases and Molina scored when B.J. Upton grounded into a double play. The Rays, who are without third baseman Evan Longoria because of a torn hamstring, finished an eight-game trip at 4-4. “We could have easily gone 1-7 on this road trip,”Price said. “I feel like that was a pretty good road trip for us, especially with us dealing with the injuries that were dealing with right now.” ’ ’ ’
