MILWAUKEE —For the first time in 79 years, a Washington-based team is 20 games

scoreless innings and Steve Lombardozzi hit a three-run triple in the Nationals
8-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night. “We havent done

playing good on the road. Pitching staff has been great, offence has been good,
defence outstanding. Thats how you win ballgames.” The Nationals have won six
consecutive games, matching a season-high, and improved to 59-39. The last time
a District of Columbia team was 20 games over .500 was 1933, when the American
League Senators finished 99-53 and lost the World Series in five games to the
New York Giants. “Its July,” Ryan Zimmerman said. “If we have the best record in
September or October then we can talk about it.” Milwaukees seventh straight
loss came on the day general manager Doug Melvin acknowledged he was working to
trade ace Zack Greinke, effectively signalling that the Brewers are giving up
hopes of reaching the post-season a year after advancing to the NL championship
series. “We just got down early and never could get the big hit,” Milwaukee
manager Ron Roenicke said. Jackson (6-6) scattered eight hits and a walk while
striking out four. “I made a couple of pitches when I needed to and had some
defensive plays when I needed them,” the right-hander said. “It was just a
combination of both.” The Brewers were 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position
against Jackson. “Our guy was just spectacular,” Johnson said. “A couple little
jams and he pitched out of them. Hes been pitching great all year.” The victory
also allowed the Nationals to tie the New York Yankees for the best record in
the major leagues. “Those guys deserve it,” Johnson said of the teams record.
“They hung in there when times were really tough. Shoot, weve earned it.”
Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo (8-8) put his team in a hole early, allowing
the Nationals to score four runs in the second. The right-hander gave up seven
runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings. “I just
couldnt find my put-away pitch,” Gallardo said. Every Washington starter reached
base except for Danny Espinosa, who went 0 for 4 in snapping his 11-game hitting
streak. Adam LaRoche homered for the third consecutive game, driving the first
pitch of the second inning for his 19th home run of the year to make it 1-0.
With two outs, Roger Bernadina walked. Washington put on the hit-and-run and
Jesus Flores hit a routine grounder to second, but Rickie Weeks had vacated his
spot to cover second. The ball bounced into the outfield and Flores reached on a
single to keep the inning alive. Gallardo then walked Jackson to load the bases.
Lombardozzi followed with a hard grounder past a diving Corey Hart at first that
went down the right-field line for a triple and a 4-0 Washington lead. The
Nationals scored three more off Gallardo in the fifth. Jackson led off with a
single and moved to third on a one-out single by Bryce Harper. Zimmerman then
hit an RBI single to score Jackson, and LaRoches slow groundout to first scored
Harper for a 6-0 lead. Michael Morse hit an RBI single that drove in Zimmerman
for a 7-0 lead and then added another single in the eighth that gave Washington
an 8-0 lead. Carlos Gomez hit a two-run home run, his eighth of the year, off
reliever Henry Rodriguez in the eighth for Milwaukee. NOTES: Brewers C
Jonathan Lucroy was reinstated from the 15-day DL and the contract of RHP Jeff
Henderson was selected from Triple-A Nashville. To make room on the roster, C
George Kottaras was designated for assignment and INF Jeff Bianchi was optioned

City.WASHINGTON – Brian McNamee testified Tuesday he saved medical waste after
injecting Roger Clemens with steroids because his wife complained that McNamee
was going to be the fall guy. McNamee said his wife told him, “Youre going to go
down! Youre going to go down! Youre going to go down!” McNamee, Clemens former
strength coach, has said he injected the seven-time Cy Young Award winner
multiple times with steroids and human growth hormone. He said he had told his
wife about the injections. He said he wanted to do something that would make his
wife stop giving him a “hard time every single day,” so he took a swab and
cotton ball from a Clemens steroid injection in 2001, put it in a beer can, and
brought it home. He said when he showed it to his wife, she said, “all right.”
The waste collected by McNamee is the physical evidence prosecutors are using
against Clemens in his perjury trial. Clemens is accused of lying to Congress in
2008 when he denied using steroids or HGH. McNamee said he stored the material
in a FedEx box, first in a closet in his basement, then in a closet in his
master bedroom. He said he didnt have any plans to use the material in any way.
In his 2008 congressional deposition, McNamee said he kept the materials because
he distrusted Clemens “to a degree.” McNamee, who testified Monday that he
injected Clemens with steroids 8 to 10 times when they were with the Toronto
Blue Jays in 1998, said Tuesday he injected him on multiples occasions when the
two men were reunited with the New York Yankees in 2000 and 2001. According to
McNamee, Clemens told him in 2000, “Im ready to start up again. You have a guy,
right?” McNamee turned to Kurt Radomski, who touted human growth hormone, as the
“latest and greatest,” and McNamee went back to check with Clemens. “He said,
Sure, get it,” McNamee said. McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids that
season, “no less than six, no more than 8 or 10” times, and HGH 10 to 20 times.
The strength coach also recounted injecting Clemens wife, Debbie, with HGH, at
her request in 2003. McNamee said that Clemens was present for the injection,
while Clemens has said he was not. One of the false charges Clemens is alleged
to have made to Congrress is that McNamee injected his wife without Clemens

Debbie looked at her husband, and said, “I cant believe youre going to let him
do this to me,” and Clemens responded, “He injects me, why cant he inject you?”
McNamee said he felt “creepy,” because it was his friends wife. He said he would
never have injected her without Clemens being present. On Monday, McNamee
described for jurors a relationship with Roger Clemens that had the hallmarks of
an illicit affair — except their secret was steroids. “Roger would ask me, What
are you doing? Are you available tonight? I knew exactly what he was talking
about,” McNamee said. Clemens was pitching for the Blue Jays, and McNamee was
the teams strength and conditioning coach. According to McNamee, the two men
went to Clemens apartment in the Jays SkyDome stadium in 1998. “Roger pulled
down his pants, exposing his right buttocks cheek to me,” McNamee said. A few
seconds later, Clemens said he was ready. McNamee said he then “plunged the
fluid in, into his buttocks.” “That,” McNamee said, “was the first time I
injected Roger Clemens.” McNamee said he didnt feel good about the moment, but
he got the sense that Clemens “wasnt good at doing the booty shot.” That year
was the beginning of a decade-long relationship that soured when McNamee, facing
legal trouble, told investigators he had injected the seven-time Cy Young Award
winner with steroids and HGH. Before McNamee returned to the stand Tuesday
morning, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton dismissed a second juror for sleeping
through part of the proceedings. The juror, a woman who works as a supermarket
cashier, said during jury selection she had never heard of Clemens, and that,
“If he did indulge, I believe he should be penalized.” Her departure leaves 14
jurors, including two alternates. The case started with 16 jurors, including
four alternates. A young man was dismissed from the jury last week for falling
