NEW YORK —Chris Davis could only watch, helpless, as the New York Yankees teed off on Orioles starter Chris Tillman for five runs in the first inning. Matt Cassel Jersey . In the top of the second, though, Baltimores designated hitter did something about it. He hit a go-ahead grand slam in a seven-run inning and Baltimore beat the New York Yankees 11-5 on Tuesday night. “It felt like the first inning would never end,” Davis said. “And then we were able to come out there and take back the momentum and really quiet the crowd.” Nick Markakis had a two-run homer among his three hits for the Orioles, who have won four of their last six, but finished July 13-14, their first month below .500 all season. Theyll start August 5 1-2 games behind the Yankees for the AL East lead and right in the thick of the hunt for the two wild-card spots. Tillman said that on Monday, he thought he would be too sick to pitch, but he started a course of antibiotics and felt better on Tuesday morning. “I didnt feel all that good,” Tillman said. “Theres no excuse to not make pitches early on.” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he was close to bringing in a reliever for Tillman. But once he made it out of the first, he talked to pitching coach Rick Adair, and made some adjustments and relied on catcher Matt Wieters. “Sometimes you have some outings where you are just not carrying everything you need to, your velocity is down a little bit,” Showalter said. “Rick just gave him a different wrinkle and a different toy to play with and Matt getting him through those last four innings was pretty special to watch.” Tillman (4-1) was charged with four earned runs and allowed eight hits with three strikeouts in his five innings. Ivan Nova allowed a career-high nine runs in five innings for New York, which tied a season-worst skid with four straight losses and made some dubious history in the process. According to STATS, LLC, the Yankees havent led by five or more after the first inning and then trailed after the second since at least 1918. The Yankees have lost nine of 12. Nova (10-5) struck out five, allowed 10 hits and lost in consecutive starts for the first time in his career. He has one win in his last seven starts, and the Yankees are 14-7 in his games. “Thats something he has been really good at this year: not letting things unravel,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “And tonight it did, for whatever reason.” The Yankees teed off on Tillman in the first. He didnt get an out until he fielded Nick Swishers groundball and threw to second for a force, after allowing an RBI single by Curtis Granderson and Robinson Canos two-run homer. He later committed an error on Ichiro Suzukis RBI grounder that made it 4-0. Russell Martin added a run with a single before he got caught in a rundown between first and second. Ramiro Pena finally grounded out to end the inning. The last time New York led by at least five after one inning and then lost was May 4, 2007, against Seattle, when the Yankees blew a 5-0 lead and lost 15-11. By the time Tillman made it back out to the mound, he had a two-run lead thanks to Davis homer, Mark Reynolds double and Omar Quintanillas two-run single—all the runs coming with two outs. He settled down to pitch four shutout innings to hang onto the lead and win his third straight decision. “Its not easy to go out there and give up a lot of runs to this offence in this ballpark and then stay in there and shut the door after that, so Im proud of him for doing it,” Davis said. Wilson Betemit helped out by tacking on an RBI double in the third and a single in the fifth. Orioles left-hander Troy Patton pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Matt Lindstrom and Luis Ayala followed up with a scoreless inning each to close out the game. Gordon hit two of Kansas Citys four home runs, Luis Mendoza took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 Saturday night after the start of the game was delayed by rain for more than three hours. Salvador Perez and Billy Butler also connected for the Royals, who have 14 homers in their last seven games. Gordon has nine home runs this season, three in this four-game series that concludes Sunday afternoon. The game started at 10:14 p.m. and spilled into Sunday morning, finally ending at 1:13 a.m. “Same ballpark, same rain delay, same weather conditions,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “They did a better job with it than we did.” Especially Gordon, who homered in the first inning and again in the seventh, taking advantage of the short distance to left field on both occasions. Asked to explain his power surge, Gordon said, “Probably the park a little bit. Take advantage of the places you play and the conditions you play under.” Mendoza (6-8) gave up three runs and seven hits over six-plus innings in his first appearance against the Orioles since 2008. Two of his 12 career wins have come against Baltimore. Chris Tillman (5-2) allowed six runs and six hits, including three homers, in 5 2-3 innings. Both pitchers were thrown off their usual pattern because of the delay, but Tillman was the only one who struggled. “Its a challenge. Their guy did a good job with it,” Showalter said. “We had two or three times it looked like we were going to be able to start. Then a bunch of cells keep popping up. Its hard to predict, being this close to the (Chesapeake) Bay. Its nobodys fault. I feel bad for the fans that toughed it out that we werent able to play a bit better.” The Royals had no desire to play a doubleheader on Sunday or stay through Monday for a makeup game, so they were delighted when the game finally got under way. “We needed to play,” manager Ned Yost said. “We have a mutual off day on Monday but we have a charity golf tournament a lot of the players need to be at, so we couldnt stay. We wanted to do everything we could to get this in.” Coming in, Tillman yiielded only two home runs in 34 innings this season. Tamba Hali Jersey. In his only previous start against the Royals, in July 2009, the right-hander also surrendered three home runs. Playing in his third major league game, Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado went 1 for 4 with an RBI double. It was another solid outing for the 20-year-old, the first player in modern baseball history (since 1900) to have two homers and a triple in his first two games, according to information provided to the Orioles by the Elias Sports Bureau. Adam Jones had two hits for the Orioles, who lost for the second time in eight games. After a delay of 3 hours, 9 minutes, Gordon hit Tillmans third pitch into the left-field seats. It was Gordons fourth leadoff homer of the season, the second in this series. Lorenzo Cain led off the second inning with a single and Perez followed with his eighth home run, the second in two nights. Butler homered on a 3-0 pitch in the third to make it 4-0. Butlers career-high 24 home runs are the most by a Royal since Carlos Beltran hit 26 in 2003. Kansas City got two runs in the sixth. After Eric Hosmer hit an RBI single, Jeff Francoeur was credited with stealing home when Orioles catcher Matt Wieters threw wildly trying to get Hosmer at second on a double-steal. Gordon homered off Miguel Socolovich leading off the seventh. Gordons only previous two-homer game was against Minnesota in 2007. Baltimore chased Mendoza in the bottom half. Following a walk and a single, Machado bounced a double inside the third base line before Omar Quintanilla singled in two runs. But with runners at second and third and two outs, Jones grounded out. NOTES: The Orioles unveiled a statue of slugger Eddie Murray in the picnic area beyond the bullpen area in centre field. Murray is the fourth of six Orioles Hall of Fame stars to be honoured with a sculpture during the 20th anniversary of Camden Yards.
