NEW YORK —Chris Davis could only watch, helpless, as the New York Yankees teed

said. “Rick just gave him a different wrinkle and a different toy to play with
and Matt getting him through those last four innings was pretty special to
watch.” Tillman (4-1) was charged with four earned runs and allowed eight hits
with three strikeouts in his five innings. Ivan Nova allowed a career-high nine
runs in five innings for New York, which tied a season-worst skid with four
straight losses and made some dubious history in the process. According to
STATS, LLC, the Yankees havent led by five or more after the first inning and
then trailed after the second since at least 1918. The Yankees have lost nine of
12. Nova (10-5) struck out five, allowed 10 hits and lost in consecutive starts
for the first time in his career. He has one win in his last seven starts, and

third straight decision. “Its not easy to go out there and give up a lot of runs
to this offence in this ballpark and then stay in there and shut the door after
that, so Im proud of him for doing it,” Davis said. Wilson Betemit helped out by
tacking on an RBI double in the third and a single in the fifth. Orioles
left-hander Troy Patton pitched two scoreless innings of relief and
Matt Lindstrom and Luis Ayala followed up with a scoreless inning each to close

Yards. Gordon hit two of Kansas Citys four home runs, Luis Mendoza took a
shutout into the seventh inning and the Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3
Saturday night after the start of the game was delayed by rain for more than
three hours. Salvador Perez and Billy Butler also connected for the Royals, who
have 14 homers in their last seven games. Gordon has nine home runs this season,
three in this four-game series that concludes Sunday afternoon. The game started
at 10:14 p.m. and spilled into Sunday morning, finally ending at 1:13 a.m. “Same
ballpark, same rain delay, same weather conditions,” Orioles manager Buck
Showalter said. “They did a better job with it than we did.” Especially Gordon,
who homered in the first inning and again in the seventh, taking advantage of
the short distance to left field on both occasions. Asked to explain his power
surge, Gordon said, “Probably the park a little bit. Take advantage of the
places you play and the conditions you play under.” Mendoza (6-8) gave up three
runs and seven hits over six-plus innings in his first appearance against the

Chris Tillman (5-2) allowed six runs and six hits, including three homers, in 5

like we were going to be able to start. Then a bunch of cells keep popping up.

After Eric Hosmer hit an RBI single, Jeff Francoeur was credited with stealing
home when Orioles catcher Matt Wieters threw wildly trying to get Hosmer at
second on a double-steal. Gordon homered off Miguel Socolovich leading off the
seventh. Gordons only previous two-homer game was against Minnesota in 2007.
Baltimore chased Mendoza in the bottom half. Following a walk and a single,
Machado bounced a double inside the third base line before Omar Quintanilla
singled in two runs. But with runners at second and third and two outs, Jones
grounded out. NOTES: The Orioles unveiled a statue of slugger Eddie Murray in
the picnic area beyond the bullpen area in centre field. Murray is the fourth of
six Orioles Hall of Fame stars to be honoured with a sculpture during the 20th
anniversary of Camden Yards. Statues of Earl Weaver, Jim Palmer, Frank Robinson
and Murray have already been put in place, and those of Cal Ripken and Brooks
