BUG Release 1.4 and SDK 1.2.8.1 are now live!

Ken Gilmer asked me come out of rebloggerment to post this message. I gave up blogging in in the mid 80's. Oh! Did I forget to tell you that I invented Blogging?

Seriously though.. I'm proud to announce that we have released BUG Release 1.4 and SDK 1.2.8.1 for public consumption. Please note that BUG hardware running R1.4 must use SDK version 1.2.8.1

can surely understand why Rado a surprising number of consumers opt to purchase all of their umbrellas from wholesale Rado watches suppliers. You must know, however, that some wholesale corporations will Omega Watches not market wholesale products right to individuals. rolex The purpose for this is that wholesale Replica Rado outfits deal chiefly with retail company. The way wholesalers Breitling earn their cash is by operating as Cartier Watches representatives of the manufacturing companies wholesale Rado and making deals to sell.

in different <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com>Rado</a> spaces in case of an unexpected shower. It makes sense for people to own different sorts of umbrellas–each, perhaps, appropriate <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com>Rado watches</a> for a particular use–since carrying the same umbrella <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com/product_list-Omega-Watches-c_182.html>Omega Watches</a> all the time, wherever you go, would be <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com/product_list-Rolex-Watches-c_181.html>rolex</a> somewhat inconvenient and would certainly wear <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com/product_list-Rado-Watches-c_180.html>Replica Rado</a> out the umbrella more quickly. Quite a few of <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com/product_list-Breitling-Watches-c_183.html>Breitling</a> the good quality umbrellas, however, are <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com/product_list-Cartier-Watches-c_184.html>Cartier Watches</a> pricey and this makes us hesitant <a href=http://www.radowatcheshome.com>wholesale Rado</a> to buy as many.

Yeah that's way too long. Drop into IRC when you have a chance. Also to switch between internal/external GPS antenna you can use this app http://www.buglabs.net/applications/GPSconfig

tail -f /var/log/concierge.log to see the antenna state changes.

Still no GPS fix after 7 hours :-( Hard to believe but it may be a hardware problem!  Of course need to dig further. How can i determine definitively whether the GPS hardware is working or not?

I guess I'll have to drop in IRC for assistance today! Of course any clues beforehand like links would be appreciated.

Oh and I will check out the website revamp and give my feedback too.

Hey Roland we released our http://buglabs.net site redesign last night. Have you had a chance to check it out?

Also, I left a comment over on your blog post.

successfully upgraded to R1.4 kernal and then root FS R1.4 but GPS still doesn't get a fix!

http://www.rolandtanglao.com/archives/2009/03/17/upgraded-kernal-and-them-root-fs-my-bug-froom-13-r14-gps-still-doesnt-get-fix

thanks for everybody's help in getting this far, finger crossed the GPS thing will be solved just as quickly

oops didn't realize you have to:

 1. upgrade kernal first and THEN
 2. upgrade root FS.

Will:

 1. downgrade root FS to 1.3 and then
 2. upgrade kernal to 1.4 and then
 3. re-upgrade root FS to 1.4

I got it to work. Thanks bballantine! Full blog post later but briefly the key was to do:

bzip2 -d <imagename>

because for whatever reason the "j" option on tar i.e. tar xvfj doesn't actually do anything!

Next up tonight is hopefully: upgrading the kernal!

bballantine commented: "Reading over your blog post, my best guess is that the root filesystem wasn't properly written to your card.  I see you have written this step on your blog -- dd if=bug-image-production-bug-R1.4-rootfs.ext3.bz2 of=/dev/disk1s1 -- which is wrong.  You need to unzip that filesystem file first, after which it should not have the .bz2 extension."

Ooops, my bad! I'll try this without the bz2 and if still doesn't work I'll try to get on IRC before 6p.m eastern, thanks for the reply

I added a the upgrading links to the 1.4 release notes:

Roland, thanks for the feedback.  Reading over your blog post, my best guess is that the root filesystem wasn't properly written to your card.  I see you have written this step on your blog -- dd if=bug-image-production-bug-R1.4-rootfs.ext3.bz2 of=/dev/disk1s1 -- which is wrong.  You need to unzip that filesystem file first, after which it should not have the .bz2 extension.

Also, occasionally this step fails for me (I blame my crappy card reader) by not writing all the data.  It's easy to tell if this happens because it should spit out the total amount of data written, which should be right around the same as the rootfs filesize (which for R1.4 is just over 150MB).  If it spits out a number less than that, try again.

Roland, thanks for your suggestions!  We hope to have things in a little better shape shortly and would appriciate your feedback.

ok, well i wasn't sure i whether to upgrade the Fiile System first or the kernal first. Based on Brian's comment I tried the filesystem and couldn't get the R 1.4 Root FS Upgrade to work on my Mac:

http://www.rolandtanglao.com/archives/2009/03/16/tried-upgrade-bug-labs-bug-root-fs-r14-now-my-bug-borked

Any help on how to get my Bug working again, would be appreciated! twitter @rtanglao, skype: rtanglao , email roland@rolandtanglao.com and I will also try to be on IRC tomorrow during Eastern Bug Labs hours.

p.s. The login to the site doesn't work for me, so I resetmy password and I am sure I entered my credentials correctly but it still failed.

Roland,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

In response to your first question, yes that is all you need to do.

I will spend sometime on Monday reviewing your last set of suggestions. We do have an on-going  internal initiative to work on our web precence. This feedback is very valuable.

Thanks again,

Brian

Congrats on shipping 1.4.

I find this confusing and I have been developing software for 20 years, oh well :-)

My  Bug arrived in December 2008, so I take it I have to do the following, correct?

 1. Upgrade my kernal and rootfs to R1.4
 2. Upgrade my SDK to 1.2.8.1

Do I have to do anything else?

Some suggestions:

 1. Perhaps this should be on your blog at bugblogger.com instead of here?
 2. It's very difficult to follow your confusing web presence and mailing lists. I humbly suggest you have a marketing blog maintained by somebody non technical like Jeremy (has he left?) and a developer blog mantained by your dev relations gal and have the developer blog synthesize the best of the wiki, the idea scale and the mailing lists.
 3. Perhaps explicitly label the stable releases on your start page i.e. buglabs.net/start should say use this kernal and release on your bug (currently R1.4) and use this version of the SDK (currently 1.2.8.1). And then say something like any other releases or software mentioned on the mailing lists and wiki are for thrill seekers only.

Just my two cents and my apologies in advance if this  kind of stuff is somewhere that should be obvious. (in that case post a link please)

....Roland
